Sanitary Engineering Aspects of Long-Range Fallout from Nuclear Detonations

From abstract: Results of a study of the sanitary engineering aspects of fallout from nuclear weapons are reported. Data were obtained from: a. Weekly surface water samples from 22 stations on streams and reservoirs in Eastern Massachusetts, collected from March, 1952 to July, 1953, and assayed for radioactivity. b. Weekly rain samples from March to July, 1953. c. Stream mud and soil samples collected before and after a large fallout. d. Results of fallout activity measurements by others based on samples from Massachusetts and the vicinity of Rochester, New York. The European Corn Borer: A Menace to the Country's Corn Crop (open access)

The European Corn Borer: A Menace to the Country's Corn Crop

"The European corn borer probably is the most injurious plant pest that has yet been introduced into this country. It is now known to be present in an area of about 320 square miles near Boston, Massachusetts. Unless repressed and restricted it may be spread throughout the country and cause serious and widespread losses to the corn crop.... To suppress this pest burn or otherwise destroy during the fall, winter, or spring all cornstalks, corn stubble, crop remnants, and stalks of garden plants, weeds, or wild grasses within the infested areas likely to harbor the overwintering borers." -- p. 2. In addition to control measures, this bulletin also explains how to identify injuries caused by the corn borer and discusses its life cycle and habits.

Potash Salts from Texas-New Mexico Polyhalite Deposits: Commercial Possibilities, Proposed Technology, and Pertinent Salt-Solution Equilibria

From Introduction: "Figure 1 shows the location of sources that have been either exploited or seriously considered at one time or another, super-imposed upon a map indicating by small letters the order of consumption of K2O in the leading States; the amount used in these States, together with the percentage of the total consumption of potash used as fertilizer in the United States in 1939, is given in table 1. Figure 2 shows the domestic production and total consumption of potassium salts, in terms of tons of K2O, with the value per unit at the plants, for each year since 1913. Considered together, these two figures tell a significant story."
