Excitation Functions for Reactions of Bev Protons on Indium (Master's Thesis) (open access)

Excitation Functions for Reactions of Bev Protons on Indium (Master's Thesis)

Abstract: "Indium was bombarded with protons in the energy range 2 to 6 Bev. Cross sections are reported for the (p,px+), (p,pn), and (p,p') reactions, as well as those for the formation of Be-7 and several neutron deficient isotopes of cadmium and indium. It was found that the (p,pn) yield increases slowly in the energy range 2 to 6 Bev, while the (p,px+) and (p,p') yields are approximately constant. The variation of the (p,pn) and (p,px+) yields with target thickness is discussed. The yields of several isomeric levels are correlated with their nuclear spin."

Off-Gas Treatment in Berkeley Enclosures

"In the past ten years quantities of alpha-, beta-, gamma- and neutron-emitting isotopes handled in enclosures have increased from microcuries to kilocuries. Contaminated-atmosphere problems have increased accordingly. Developments at Berkeley are reviewed with particular emphasis on recent equipment, viz: a multiple-purpose gas scrubber and a total-capture system for slug-dissolver off gas."

Nuclear Decay Schemes in the Actinium Family (open access)

Nuclear Decay Schemes in the Actinium Family

Abstract: "With magnetic alpha-particle and electron high-resolution spectrographs and scintillation gamma-ray spectrometers, a study was made of the nuclear decay of a number of members of the actinium family - U-235, Th-227, Ra-223, Em-219, Po-215, and Bi-211. Decay schemes are presented for each of these nuclides, together with such correlations as are possible with present theoretical nuclear models. The decay scheme of U-235 and a portion of that of Th-227 are interpretable in terms of the collective model and a spherical shell-model characteristics; however, the intermediate nuclides present complexities not well understood."

The Application of Pulsed Neutron Sources to Criticality Measurements (open access)

The Application of Pulsed Neutron Sources to Criticality Measurements

Abstract: Experimentally measured promp-neutron decay constants for sub-critical systems are of considerable value as normalization data for calculations of prompt-neutron time constants. A method of measuring these decay constants with a pulsed neutron source, neutron detector and multi-channel time-delay analyzer has been developed and used on a number of fast-spectrum subcritical systems. An analysis of this method based on the one-energy group, one-delayed-neutron group reactor kinetic equations is presented and discussed. The curve of neutron flux versus time predicted by the kinetic equations is compared with the observed curve obtained with a 13.1-cm. diam. enriched-uranium sphere to indicate the application and limitations of the analysis.

Beehive and Hornet : Reactor Codes for Spherical Geometry (open access)

Beehive and Hornet : Reactor Codes for Spherical Geometry

Abstract: Beehive is a five energy group, two region, time independent spherical reactor code. It considers the problem of reactor system in which the core material is assumed to be at a higher energy (temperature) than the reflector material. The code obtains a closed solution for the critical reactor assembly by a procedure which is a logical extension of normal two group theory. The companion code, Hornet, computes the neutron fluxes for the critical assembly determined by the Beehive calculation. Both codes have been programmed for the IBM Magnetic Drum Data-Processing Machine, Type 650. The codes, together with the flow diagrams, are included with this report.

A Description of a Shock Wave in Free Particle Hydrodynamics with Internal Magnetic Fields

Abstract: "The structure of an extremely strong magnetohydrodynamic shock is discussed in the limit of no particle collisions. It is tentatively concluded that the shock transition takes place through the mechanism of a strong electric field produced by charge separation. The pressure in the shocked plasma is due primarily to a very high electron temperature. The ions, on the other hand, undergo an irreversible temperature change of only 3."
