Electroplates on Thorium (open access)

Electroplates on Thorium

Abstract: "The protection of thorium in hot water was studied. Copper electrocladding on thorium offers promising protection against hot water. The corrosion of thorium in 95 C water was reduced appreciably by a thorium phosphate film. The results of this abbreviated investigation offer a basis for the development of a method of protecting thorium at elevated temperatures in corrosive media."

Mineralogical Examination of Pitchblende Concentrates and Nitric Acid Digest Residues

This report has two parts to it discussing mineralogical examination of pitchblende concentrates and nitric acid digest residues. Part I gives the results of a cursory examination with the petrographic microscope of samples of pitchblende concentrates and residues to see if there is a relationship between the mineral composition of the samples and the filterability of the residue. Part II gives a revaluation of the data in Report BMI-241 on the mineral composition of two residues from the nitric acid digestion of pitchblende concentrates at the Rallinckrodt Chemical Works.

Influence of Fluorine Substitution on the Properties of Metal Chelate Compounds

From introduction: "This is the first of three articles dealing with the influence of fluorine substitution in the ligand on the properties of metal chelate compounds. Although the primary purpose of this project was to study the influence of fluorine substitution on the properties -- particularly light absorption -- of uranyl compounds, copper chelates were chosen for preliminary study as model substances, because they are easily prepared."

Gamma Rays from the Interaction of 14-Mev Neutrons with Beryllium (open access)

Gamma Rays from the Interaction of 14-Mev Neutrons with Beryllium

Abstract: "The cross section for the Be-9(n, t')Li-7*-->Li-7 + Y(0.477 Mev) reaction has been measured in the vicinity of 14 Mev by detecting the gamma-rays at scattering angles from 30 to 150 degrees. A time-of-flight technique was used to distinguish the gamma-rays from the high neutron background. The cross section drops from 20 mb at 13.6 Mev to 10 mb at 14.1 Mev and then rises to 30 mb at 14.7 Mev."

Unit Operations Section Monthly Progress Report July 1959

A Lucite model of a multi-stage countercurrent hydroclone solvent extraction apparatus has been constructed and tested with Amsco-water. The diffusivity of Cs 134 tracer in aqueous chloride solution was measured to check the performance of the capillary diffusivity measuring system. The experimental data from four Druhm runs showed that 1/8in. thick graphite liners are usable for reactor temperatures above the boiling point of sodium.

Use of 1-Ascorbic Acid as a Colorimetric Reagent for Uranium (open access)

Use of 1-Ascorbic Acid as a Colorimetric Reagent for Uranium

Abstract: "Hexavalent uranium in weakly acid solution produces with a large excess of ascorbic acid a yellow-brown color whose intensity under certain conditions is a linear function of uranium concentration. Chloride, nitrate, perchlorate, along with Fe, Cd, Mn, Na, Ca, Sn, Mg and Th are without effect on the color while phosphate, sulfate, fluoride, citrate, tartrate, oxalate, chromium, and vanadium and moderate amounts of Ni, Zn, Mo and Al interfere. A rapid ether extraction procedure for purification of the uranium has been developed."

The Detection of Uranium by X-ray Spectrometry

Abstract: "The possibility of detecting small quantities of uranium with an X-ray spectrometer was investigated. An X-ray spectrograph was modified by substituting a geiger counter for the photographic film. Both primary and secondary methods of excitation were studied. Radiation background of high intensity and variability limits the sensitivity of the present apparatus to 1%. Suggestions are made for increasing the sensitivity of the method."

Trip Rerport Organic Reactor Collant Survey

A preliminary report has shown the potential importance of organic reactor coolants to Hanford technology. The salient points are complete avoidance of corrosion problems and accomplishment of DPR performance with low pressure technique. The recommendation of the report that loop tests be made at Hanford is to be acted upon by Recirculation Technology Unit as soon as organic coolant material is received. To insure starting this experimental work fully abreast of the information available, a trip to sites working with organic coolants was made. Specifically, data were sought on practical details of design for handling organic coolants, heat transfer and fouling characteristics, corrosion of materials, and hazards of handling organics.

Radiation Hazards from Recycled Reactor Fuel (open access)

Radiation Hazards from Recycled Reactor Fuel

The radiation hazards associated with recycled nuclear reactor fuels will greatly complicate the handling and refabrication of these fuels. This problem is most serious with U-233 and plutonium fuels where the presence of U-232 and the heavier isotopes of plutonium contribute energetic alpha, gamma, and neutron radiations at levels many times that from isotopically pure U-233 and Pu-239. This report summarizes present knowledge of the radiation hazards associated with recycled fuel and the additional data needed to make a thorough evaluation of these hazards.
