Abstract: This report summarizes NBS standards committee activities and accomplishments during calendar year 1983. It profiles NBS state participation on outside standards committees and highlights significant technical and individual contributions made by NBS staff. In 1983, 446 staff members (or 28% of NBS' professionals, scientific, and technical staff) participated in 989 standards committees of 87 national and international standards organizations.

From forward: Every laboratory in this country is a valuable national resource. Along with the people who work in these facilities, U.S. laboratories constitute the basic foundation of this country's scientific and industrial strength. As the nation's foremost science and engineering measurement laboratory, the National Bureau of Standards has some of the premier research and testing facilities in the United States, and several of our laboratories are unequaled anywhere in the world. Bureau scientists and engineers use these special facilities to pursue the measurement-related work that U.S. science and industry need to grow and prosper. This brochure highlights only a small number of the special facilities available at NBS and provides information about their availability for collaborative or independent research and testing.

This report presents the results of a mineral survey of the Starvation Point Wilderness Study Area (AZ-010-005/UT-040-057), Mohave County, Arizona and Washington County, Utah.

"This report is the last in a series by the New York State Geological Survey on studies funded by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. This is a report based on the observational data collected from Laysan Island on the Hawaiian monk seal. The data collected comes from the observations between 1977 through 1980, reflecting the population and what influences its increase/decrease in number. This includes reproduction patterns and survival rates.

This is a report on observation data collected between the 17th of March and the 14th of September, as well as between the 26 of October and the 22nd of November in 1982 of the population of the Hawaiian monk seal at Lisianski Island. Data includes birth of pups, weaning, molting, and other factors that may influence the haul-out patterns. Injuries and deaths were also documented.

This is a report on a 3.5 month observational study of the endangered Hawaiian monk seal that took place on the Laysan Island. The total recorded counts ranged from 66-119 and averaged to 90 seals, five of which died in the few months, nine injured.

Summary: "The potential impacts to visual resources, resulting from construction and operation of a nuclear waste repository and transportation route in the Gibson Dome Area of southeastern Utah, were evaluated."

This study is a part of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Civilian Radioactive Waste Management (CRWM) Program and discusses the geologic investigations made on the salt beds of the Paradox Formation.

Introduction: The U.S. Geological Survey began a study in 1980 of the quality of water in the 14 principal aquifers in Minnesota. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency funded the study as part of the Underground Injection Control Program, which deals with disposal of liquid wastes beneath land surface. The initial report designated the 14 aquifers and provided general information about their geologic, hydrologic, and water-quality characteristics (Adolphson and others, 1981). This report, one in a series that describes individual aquifers in more detail, concerns the Upper Carbonate aquifer.
