An Apparatus for Measuring the Relative Wear of Sole Leathers, and the Results Obtained with Leather from Different Parts of a Hide
Technical paper issued by the Bureau of Standards over studies conducted on the quality of sole leather. As stated in the introduction, "the development of a simple method for quickly determining the durability of sole leather seemed desirable, and this paper discusses a laboratory apparatus designed for this purpose and also presents the results of tests made to date to determine the relative wear of leather from different parts of the hide" (p. 3). From abstract: Results of a reconnaissance geochemical survey of the Iron Mountain Quadrangle, Michigan; Wisconsin are reported. Field and laboratory data are presented for 479 groundwater samples, 369 stream sediment samples, and 389 stream water samples. Statistical and areal distributions of uranium and other possible uranium-related variables are displayed. A generalized geologic map of the survey area is provided, and pertinent geologic factors which may be of significance in evaluating the potential for uranium mineralization are briefly discussed.

Control Chart Method Applied to Errors in Radioactive Counting
Abstract: The Control Chart statistical methods, developed by Showhart for the control of quality of manufactured products, are applied to the control of Geiger-Miller counting instruments. Experiments are reported to show the use to the Control Chart method for detecting disturbances in instrumental behavior and for detecting radioactive effects so weak that they are near the limit of detection of the instruments. As a corollary, the control chart can be used to reduce to its practical limit the time required for tests.

Mechanical Properties of Zirconium-Tin Alloys
Abstract: "The mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of induction-melted, zirconium-tin alloys have been determined. The alloys investigated contained from zero to five per cent tin and up to 0.3% carbon. The zirconium used was United States Bureau of Mines sponge zirconium. The mechanical properties investigated include the tensile, hot-hardness, and impact properties."

Hydrogen Embrittlement of Zirconium
Abstract: "The amount of hydrogen normally present in zirconium and zirconium alloys suffices to reduce their ductility greatly in an impact test at room temperature, after slow cooling from 600 F. Quenching from 600 F or above gives high impact strength, as does removal of hydrogen by high-temperature vacuum annealing. This report discusses the evidence on hydrogen embrittlement, the diffusion, solid solubility, and equilibrium pressure of hydrogen of hydrogen in zirconium, the microstructure, and the effects of hydrogen and heat treatment on the mechanical properties of zirconium."

Measurement of Large, High-Frequency, Short-Pulse Currents Using a Radial Shunt
Abstract: "The measurement of large, high-frequency, short-pulse currents--ordinarily complicated by inductance, stray magnetic fields, and magnetic forces that tend to disassemble the measuring device--is simplified and made with an average error of 2-1/2% by the use of a specially developed noninductive radial shunt in conjuntion with an oscilloscope. The skin-effect correction is derived theoretically and the accuracy of the method is demonstrated."
