Injection of Electrons into the Astron Reactor (open access)

Injection of Electrons into the Astron Reactor

"The injection of the E-layer electrons into the Astron reactor is described by following the electrons as they emerge from the anode of the 1-Mev electron gun through the various steps up to their injection in the reactor volume. Several problems are imposed by this injection process and their solutions are discussed briefly. The detailed mathematical theory and calculations will be presented in a separate paper now in preparation."

Monte Carlo Methods (open access)

Monte Carlo Methods

Abstract: "The paper is concerned with the basic concepts and techniques of Monte Carlo, such as the generation of random numbers, the construction of samples from a given distribution, and techniques for reducing the variances of the estimates. The latter include the expected values method, systematic and stratified sampling, importance sampling, splitting and Russian roulette, conditional Monte Carlo, and correlation and regression. These are discussed with reference to two examples: a system comprising a roulette wheel and three urns, and a simplified neutron shielding problem. For the two-stage sampling in the first example, the inequalities among the variances of ten of the estimates obtained by various methods are investigated."

Direct Interaction Neutrons from 14-Mev Inelastic Neutron Scattering (open access)

Direct Interaction Neutrons from 14-Mev Inelastic Neutron Scattering

Abstract: "Neutron nonelastic cross sections measured at different detector biases have been used to determine the cross sections for inelastically scattering 14 Mev neutrons into 9- to 14-Mev energy range. The cross section for producing these high energy neutrons, which may be attributed to direct interaction processes, is roughly 10% of the nonelastic cross section, for all elements. A comparison is made with data of Coon and co workers, who measured angular distributions for the same high-energy inelastically scattered-neutron group."

Neutron Nonelastic Cross-Section Measurements from 7 to 29 Mev

Abstract: "Neutron nonelastic cross sections have been measured for 23 elements at 14 Mev, and for a selected set of these elements over the energy ranges 7 to 14 Mev and 21 to 29 Mev. Conventional sphere transmission techniques were used for the measurements. A comparison with optical model calculations of Bjorklund and Fernbach shows excellent agreement."

Gettering Hydrogen at Ultra-Low Pressures by Evaporated Metal Coatings (open access)

Gettering Hydrogen at Ultra-Low Pressures by Evaporated Metal Coatings

"Preliminary results are given for pumping neutral hydrogen gas in 1-second pulses by the gettering action of an evaporated coating of molybdenum. One second gas in-puts are observed at equivalent pumping speeds > 10-4 liters/second at 1 x 10-(-8) mm Hg in a 70-liter volume system. Base pressures <1 x 10-(-10) mm Hg are achieved by gettering with the static evaporated coating and pumping with a 4 in. oil diffusion pump simultaneously. Criteria for choice of gettering metal and a brief outline of pumping requirements for controlled fusion devices called Pyrotrons are included."

Fast Neutron Effects on Du Pont 1290 Film (open access)

Fast Neutron Effects on Du Pont 1290 Film

Abstract: "Fast neutron effects on a widely used x-ray film have been investigated. The neutron flux was provided by the (d, t) reaction of a Cockcroft-Walton accelerator. Integrated exposures to 10-10 n/cm-2 were given the film. It was found that perturbations on film that were pre-exposed to Co-60 gamma rays from 10 to 2000 r were negligible. Simultaneous exposure of neutrons plus gammas also indicated negligible effect on the film insofar as the gamma dose was concerned."

Cyclotron Resonance Heating of a Deuterium Plasma (open access)

Cyclotron Resonance Heating of a Deuterium Plasma

Abstract: "The energy gained by a deuterium plasma, from a three megacycle per second radiofrequency field, was studied experimentally. A static magnetic field, in the form of a "mirror", was used. The coil of an rf resonant circuit, placed at the center of the machine produced a time-varying magnetic field parallel to the static field. This, in turn, induced an electrical field, in an azmuthal direction, which acted on the ions. When this was in synchronism with the cyclotron frequency, the ions could pick up energy. At this resonance the light intensity from the plasma increased markedly. This effect was used as evidence for the transfer of energy to the ions."
