Airborne Radioactivity Survey of the Red Desert Region, Sweetwater County, Wyoming (open access)

Airborne Radioactivity Survey of the Red Desert Region, Sweetwater County, Wyoming

From abstract: An airborne radioactivity survey of a selected area in the Red Desert, Sweetwater County, Wyoming, containing outcrops of radioactive lignites and shales of known surface extent and uranium content, was flown on flight lines at three levels, respectively 250, 500, and 1,000 feet above the ground and spaced at one-quarter mile intervals. Measurements from three identical dual-channel radiation detectors were simultaneously recorded to obtain data at various distances from natural radioactive sources of known configuration. The radiation intensity measurements were fully corrected for all extraneous effects and were compiled as profiles of radiation intensity, as an isoradioactivity contour map, and as curves showing the relationship between radiation intensity and distance from the source.

Airborne Radioactivity Surveys for Phosphate in Florida (open access)

Airborne Radioactivity Surveys for Phosphate in Florida

Introduction: Deposits of phosphate in Florida, located beyond the limits of known producing areas, have been reported by prospectors and mining companies. Much of the information has been based upon prospecting and exploration which was undertaken many years ago and as a result the published data relating to the occurrence of these deposits are fragmentary, and few details relating to specific locations and extent are available.

An Analysis of Salinity in Streams of the Green River Basin (open access)

An Analysis of Salinity in Streams of the Green River Basin

Abstract: Dissolved-solids concentrations and loads can be estimated from streamflow records using a regression model derived from chemical analyses of monthly samples. The model takes seasonal effects into account by the inclusion of simple-harmonic time functions. Monthly mean dissolved-solids loads simulated for a 6-year period at U.S. Geological Survey water-quality stations in the Green River Basin of Wyoming agree closely with corresponding loads estimated from daily specific-conductance records. In a demonstration of uses of the model, an average gain of 114,000 tons of dissolved solids per year was estimated for 6-year period in a 70-mile reach of the Green River from Fontemelle Reservoir to the town of Green River, including the lower 30-mile reach of the Big Sandy River.

Analysis of Stream Quality in the Yampa River Basin, Colorado and Wyoming (open access)

Analysis of Stream Quality in the Yampa River Basin, Colorado and Wyoming

From introduction: This report relates to the first of the above objectives by describing stream quality in the Yampa River basin through 1976, with particular emphasis on conditions from August 1975 through September 1976. The content of this report is, at times, relatively technical. This is intentional. The report is aimed not at planners and decision makers but rather at those persons assigned the task of having to design, implement, and interpret a river basin assessment. The techniques and procedures used to determine ambient stream quality in the Yampa River basin have been presented in detail so that their applicability to other river basins can be determined. For the planner and decision maker, the results presented in this report are summarized in less technical terms in phase-l (Steele and others, 1979) and phase-ll summary reports.

Ancient Lavas in Shenandoah National Park Near Luray, Virginia (open access)

Ancient Lavas in Shenandoah National Park Near Luray, Virginia

Abstract: In the Blue Ridge Province of northern Virginia, Maryland, and southern Pennsylvania, Lower Cambrian beds are underlain by a thick sequence of greenstone and interbedded sedimentary rocks known as the Catoctin Formation. An area near Luray, Va., was studied to determine the thickness of the formation, its relationship to overlying and underlying rocks, and the original nature of the lavas from which the Catoctin greenstone was derived. There the Catoctin Formation lies unconformably on granitic rocks. Its basal sedimentary layer ranges from a few inches to 150 feet in thickness and contains pebbles of underlying basement rocks. The erosion surface beneath the Catoctin is irregular, and in several places, hills as much as 1,000 feet high were buried beneath the Catoctin lavas. No important time break is indicated between the deposition of the Catoctin Formation and the overlying Cambrian sediments. The original Catoctin lavas were basaltic and were probably normal plateau basalts. Columnar joints, amygdules, sedimentary dikes, flow breccias, low-dipping primary joints, and other primary structures are well preserved.

The Ancient Volcanic Rocks of South Mountain, Pennsylvania (open access)

The Ancient Volcanic Rocks of South Mountain, Pennsylvania

From introduction: In December, 1892, as the result of field work on the part of Dr. G. H. Williams in the northern and of the writer in the southern portion of South Mountain, there appeared a preliminary description of two of the rock types, in which their identification as ancient volcanics was announced. In this bulletin it is proposed to substantiate that identification with more detailed proof. It is further proposed to show that these ancient igneous rocks were, at the time of their consolidation, identical in character with their recent volcanic analogues, and that their present differences are due to subsequent changes, chief among which has been devitrification. It is also proposed to recognize these facts in the nomenclature.
