Effects of the Drought of 1980-81 on Streamflow and on Ground-Water Levels in Georgia
From purpose and scope: This report examines and discusses the severity, areal extent, and duration of the 1980-81 drought in Georgia. This drought produced the lowest rates of streamflow since 1954 in most areas of the State and the lowest since 1925 in some areas.

Streamflow Losses Along the Balcones Fault Zone, Nueces River Basin, Texas
From purpose and scope: The overall purpose of the investigation was to provide information useful for designing recharge reservoirs above the Balcones Fault Zone and for managing these reservoirs for efficient and effective use of the ground- and surface-water resources. Major objectives were to define the distribution of streamflow losses along the streams, to quantify the natural losses, and to determine the influence of various hydrologic conditions such as antecedent conditions, ground-water levels, and flow regimes on recharge.

Reconnaissance of Surface-Water Resources in the Togiak River Basin, Southwestern Alaska, 1980 and 1982
From introduction: This report is a product of a Geological Survey program, under way since the early 1970's, to study environmental conditions in selected frontier areas of Alaska...The purpose of this report is to present reconnaissance-level data on the surface-water resources of the Togiak River basin. These data include measurements and observations of streamflow conditions during late summer and late winter periods, stream-channel characteristics, evidence of past flooding and erosion, water quality, and benthic invertebrate populations.

Hydrology of the Wibaux-Beach Lignite Deposit Area, Eastern Montana and Western North Dakota
From objectives and scope: This study was undertaken in response to U.S. Bureau of Land Management concerns for the water resources of the Wibaux-Beach area in the event of lignite mining. The objectives of the study were to: (1) Define the stratigraphic sequence within a few hundred feet above and below the minable lignite; (2) define the premining hydrologic and geochemical regime of the Wibaux-Beach deposit area; and (3) describe some of the hydrologic implications of the strip-mining process. A fourth objective, the establishment of historical data base with which to access any modifications to the system attributable to future mining, was accomplished as a byproduct of the other three.

Measurement of Bedload Discharge in Nine Illinois Streams with the Helley-Smith Sampler
From purpose and study: The purpose of the present study was to analyze the bedload discharge measurements, to develop bedload-discharge rating curves for those sites with sufficient record, to determine the usefulness of each sampling site for measurement of bedload discharge, and to evaluate the suitability of the Helley-Smith sampler to Illinois streams.

A Two-Dimensional, Finite-Difference Model of the High Plains Aquifer in Southern South Dakota
Purpose: The objectives of this study were (1) to collect, synthesize, and interpret geologic and hydrologic data on the aquifer in the southern South Dakota area; (2) to evaluate, by digital-computer-model simulation, values assigned to the aquifer parameters; and (3) to evaluate the sensitivity of the calibrated digital-computer-model to changes in magnitude of the selected hydrologic parameters. Results of this study are, therefore, applicable to solving potential water-resource management problems in the southern South Dakota and northern Nebraska model area.

Statistical Analysis and Evaluation of Water-Quality Data for Selected Streams in the Coal Area of East-Central Montana

Man-Induced Channel Adjustment in Tennessee Streams
Preface: This report is an attempt to relate the effects of channel modifications to the resulting instabilities in the fluvial system. The primary objective is to provide the Tennessee Department of Transportation with information concerning channel stability in relation to river crossing structures. Several new analytical techniques are presented that can aid in the understanding of channel adjustment to natural and man-induced stress. The methods of analyses presented herein should be applicable to other areas with alluvial, sand-bed channels, especially in the Gulf Coastal Plains States.
