Salt at Shallow Depths in the Coastal Plain of Texas and Louisiana (open access)

Salt at Shallow Depths in the Coastal Plain of Texas and Louisiana

From introduction: Salt occurs at depths less than 500 feet in six salt domes in Texas and Louisiana. Underground mining operations are being carried out in each of these domes. The following notes have been prepared in an effort to furnish data regarding chemical composition and structure of the rock salt in the shallow deposits.

U.S. Geological Survey Research in Radioactive Waste Disposal--Fiscal Year 1981 (open access)

U.S. Geological Survey Research in Radioactive Waste Disposal--Fiscal Year 1981

Abstract: The report summarizes progress on geologic and hydrologic research related to the disposal of radioactive wastes. The research is described according to whether it is related most directly to (1) high-level and transuranic wastes; (2) low-level wastes, or (3) uranium mill tailings. Included is research applicable to the identification and geohydrologic characterization of waste-disposal sites, to investigations of specific sites where wastes have been stored, and to studies of regions or environments where waste-disposal sites might be located. A significant part of the activity is concerned with techniques and methods for characterizing disposal sites and studies of geologic and hydrologic processes related to the transport and (or) retention of waste radionuclides.

Backwater and Discharge at Highway Crossing with Multiple Bridges in Louisiana and Mississippi (open access)

Backwater and Discharge at Highway Crossing with Multiple Bridges in Louisiana and Mississippi

Purpose and Scope: The principal objective of this project was to measure the backwater and discharge distribution for multiple bridges. These data have been used to determine if the methods developed by Schneider and others (1976) for single-opening highway crossings could be applied to multiple bridges. In addition, the method developed by Tracey and Carter (1955) and Cragwall (1958) was modified to use the procedure proposed by Schneider and others (1976) to calculate friction losses in the approach reach. This modified procedure was then also tested.

A Two-Dimensional Finite-Element Model Study of Backwater and Flow Distribution at the I-10 Crossing of the Pearl River Near Slidell, Louisiana

From introduction: This report presents the application of FESWMS to the Pearl River and illustrates the usefulness of the two-dimensional model in analyzing steady-state flow with both lateral and longitudinal variations.

The Southern Hills Regional Aquifer System of Southeastern Louisiana and Southwestern Mississippi (open access)

The Southern Hills Regional Aquifer System of Southeastern Louisiana and Southwestern Mississippi

From purpose and scope: The purposes of the investigation were to develop from available information (1) a description of the regional aquifer system serving as a public supply in the Capital Area Ground Water Conservation Commission district, the Florida Parishes of southwestern Mississippi; and (2) to discuss potential alternative sources of freshwater.

Regional Geohydrology of the Northern Louisiana Salt-Dome Basin, Part 3, Potentiometric Levels of the Wilcox-Carrizo and Sparta Aquifers (open access)

Regional Geohydrology of the Northern Louisiana Salt-Dome Basin, Part 3, Potentiometric Levels of the Wilcox-Carrizo and Sparta Aquifers

From abstract: This report is the third in a series of reports describing the regional geohydrology of the northern Louisiana salt-dome basin. The Wilcox-Carrizo and Sparta aquifers are the principal Tertiary aquifers of regional extent in the basin. The Wilcox-Carrizo aquifer is not affected by regional water-level declines, as no large pumping centers have been developed. Water-level fluctuations in wells are mostly seasonal. As shown by the hydrographs of seven wells, the seasonal fluctuations are generally less than 10 feet annually. Therefore, the potentiometric surface of the Wilcox-Carrizo aquifer in northwestern Louisiana is shown by contours using data collected from 1960-80.
