Report describing the use of a 5" x 3" NaI(Tl) detector and a high pressure ionization chamber to obtain gamma ray spectra and total gamma dose rates at approximately 100 locations during the course of several survey trips in the southeastern, central, and western United States. Reasonably precise elements of the dose rates are made using the pulse height spectra and relatively simple methods of analysis. Total terrestrial dose rates as well as the partial dose rates from the uranium-238 series, thorium-232 series, potassium-40, zirconium-niobium-95, and rhodium-106 are tabulated for each location.

Report documenting the investigation of cosmic and terrestrial background radiation. "Remeasurements in many locations furnished estimates of dosimetric increase in terrestrial levels due to fallout. Radiation measurement sin residential dwellings in he New York metropolitan areas are described" (p. 1).

From Present Programs: "There has been a gradual expansion of the Sr^90 food analysis program to include vegetable foods and finally entire diets. In some cases the analyses have also been extended to other nuclides but these data are so limited that they will not be emphasized in this report. It is expected that considerable data on Ra^226 and other naturally occurring radionuclides will be generated in coming year."

The source of information has largely been the reports submitted to UNSCEAR forwarding data for their consideration. The abstracts are given in order of type of operation as shown in the table of contents."
