Seismic Waves from an Underground Explosion in a Salt Bed: Preliminary Report

From abstract: Seismic waves resulting from a 5 kiloton nuclear detonation 1200 feet deep in a salt bed near Carlsbad, New Mexico were measured by strong-motion seismographs operated by the Coast and Geodetic Survey on the surface in the distance range from 0.5 to 8.8 miles and underground in a potash mine 8.7 to 11.2 miles distant.

The Nature of the Axioms of Relativistic Quantum Field Theory (open access)

The Nature of the Axioms of Relativistic Quantum Field Theory

"The formulation of field theories by means of Wightman functions is studied. It is shown that, given two field theories that satisfy all the axioms, one can construct a family of Wightmsn fields with the same properties by a process of superposition of Wightman functions. The condition of unitarity is formulated without reference to asymptotic conditions, and it is proved that the Wightman fields constructed by the superposition process (starting with "unitary" fields) fail to preserve unitarity."

Cobalt (II) Halides as Electrolytes in Acentonitrile (open access)

Cobalt (II) Halides as Electrolytes in Acentonitrile

"The electrical conductance of CoCl2 and CoBr2 from 10−4 to 10−1 mol/l over the temperature range 0–35°C is reported. The effects of water as trace impurity, and the halide common ion effect on conductance are examined. The properties of these solutes are also examined using spectrophotometry and transport numbers. Crystalline “solvated” compounds, of empirical formulae [CoX2(CH3CN)3]x can be separated from the saturated solutions. The magnetic susceptibilities of the crystalline substrates are in accord octahedral and tetrahedral symmetry for the cationic and anionic species in these “solvates”, the bonding in both being the spin-free type for divalent cobalt. From the optical properties of the solutions it is apparent that the “anomalous” properties of these electrolytes can be understood in a series of simultaneous processes under Mass-Law control, in which CoX2, CoX42−, Co(CH3CN)62+ and [Co(CH3CN) 62+CoX42−]° are predominant."

The Proton-Proton Triple Scattering Parameters R and A at 213 Mev (open access)

The Proton-Proton Triple Scattering Parameters R and A at 213 Mev

"As a part of a program to determine the p-p scattering matrix at 213 Mev, the triple scattering parameters R and A were measured at 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80. and 90 deg in the center-of-msss system. The results are compared with a phase shift analysis by MacGregor and Moravcsik and with the predictions of the boundary condition model of Saylor, Bryan and Marshak."

The ScCl3-Sc System (open access)

The ScCl3-Sc System

Experimental data supporting lower valence halides of scandium were not found in the literature. Our investigation was of the phase diagram of the ScCl3-Sc system, and also the vapor pressure-composition isotherm (at 960 degree) for this system. Investigation of the ScCl3-Sc system presented particular difficulties in comparison with analogous systems for rare earth elements in that ScCl3 is highly volatile (boiling pt. = 967 degree); according to our data the vapor pressure is 512 mm Hg measured at 960 degree C. Furthermore, ScCl3 and its vapors react vigorously with quartz. Because of the mentioned extent of reaction in a quartz ampule, the inside was covered with a solid layer of metallic molybdenum for use with relatively large batches of ScCl3.

Final Report: Geological, Geophysical, Chemical, and Hydrological Investigations of the Sand Springs Range, Fairview Valley, and Fourmile Flat, Churchill County, Nevada

Report on an evaluation of the Sand Springs Range as a possible location for an underground nuclear study (Shoal Event). Various tests to determine the site's suitability included aerial photography and mapping of the area through various means; drilling and bulldozing to conduct mineralogical and other physical evaluations; gravity, aeromagnetic, and refraction surveys; and studies related to the hydrology of the location and surrounding areas.

The Lepton Decay Nodes of Hyperons (open access)

The Lepton Decay Nodes of Hyperons

"In spite of the present scarcity of experimental data it appears likely that the lepton modes of hyperon decay will eventually become an important source of information concerning strangeness-changing weak interactions. In this paper we use dispersion relations to estimate the effect of intermediate meson states upon the lepton decay modes of hyperons."

Conical Refraction in Crystal Optics and Hydromagnetics (open access)

Conical Refraction in Crystal Optics and Hydromagnetics

When light propagates with the wave normal in the direction of an optic axis of a biaxial crystal, the usual ray theory breaks down. This phenomenon can be analyzed by means of an asymptotic solution of Maxwell's equations. The intensity is governed by a partial differential equation within the phase surfaces, instead of ordinary differential equations along rays. This example slows that light does not always propagate along rays. A similar phenomenon occurs in hydromagnetics.

Linearized Three Component Magneto-Hydrodynamics (open access)

Linearized Three Component Magneto-Hydrodynamics

"A linearized three component MHD theory is given. The three components are two oppositely charged species and a neutral species. Linearized macroscopic equations are presented which in the limit of vanishing magnet field reduce to fluid dynamical equations, and in the limit of vanishing neutral components is frictional. In addition the sound speed that enters is a function of three equilibrium densities. These equations yield a dispersion relation which is tenth order in the wave speed. The decay frequencies of all ten modes are calculated to first order terms in the friction, and are found to be all isotropic."
