Collected Reports on Fission Cross Sections of U237 in Thermal Neutron, Intermediate Neutron, and Degraded Fission Neutron Spectra (open access)

Collected Reports on Fission Cross Sections of U237 in Thermal Neutron, Intermediate Neutron, and Degraded Fission Neutron Spectra

Part 1. The neutron fission cross section of U237 has been measured in a thermal neutron spectrum and in a somewhat degraded fission spectrum. The fission cross section for thermal neutrons is found to be <2 barns; the ratio of the fission cross section of U237 to that of U235 in the degraded fission spectrum is found to be 0.476 +- 15% which corresponds to [formula] in this spectrum equal to 0.66 +- 0.10 barns. Part 2. The average neutron fission cross section of U237 has been measured in a neutron energy range extending from approximately 100 ev to fission spectrum. the average fission cross section in this spectrum is found to be 0.70 +- 0.07 barns. Part 3. The low thermal fission cross section for U237 (<2 barns) indicated that the excitation function for fission probably shows an effective threshold. If the excitation function is like all other heavy element (Z > 90) neutron fission excitation functions, it will exhibit a region of approximate constancy starting at a neutron energy of 0.5 to 1 Mev above its effective threshold and extending to a neutron energy in the neighborhood of 5.5 Mev. A hypothetical excitation function for neutron fission of …

Extraction of Americium Nitrate with Tributyl Phosphate (open access)

Extraction of Americium Nitrate with Tributyl Phosphate

The extraction of americium nitrate with tributyl phosphate has been investigated for aqueous solutions containing sodium nitrate and nitric acid. Americium nitrate is found in the organic phase as free molecules or ions and as the complex (Am(NO3)3. Aqueous solutions containing nitric acid introduce a competitive factor through the formation of the TBP-KNO3 complex in the solvent layer. In addition. americium nitrate is complexed in the aqueous phase by nitric acid.

Grain Refinement Produced by an Alpha Phase Anneal of Beta Phase Heat Treated and Water Quenched Uranium

During an experiment involving alpha phase annealing (at 610 to 655 deg C for 5 and 10 min) of beta-quenched uranium, it was determined that the relatively coarse, irregular shaped grains (0.08 to 0.150 mm in diameter) in the beta-quenched structure, were replaced by fine equiaxed grains (0.04 to 0.09 mm in diameter).

A Preliminary Study of the Economic Incentive of In-Pile Boiling as Applied to Dual Market Reactor Plants (open access)

A Preliminary Study of the Economic Incentive of In-Pile Boiling as Applied to Dual Market Reactor Plants

A study was performed to determine the economic incentives associated with in-pile boiling, with the explicit assumption that this method of operation was technically feasible. A non-boiling reactor plant was used as a comparison, and the net electric generation was held constant at 400 Mw. The economic effect of variations in specific power from 47 to 32 kw/ft., and steam qualities of 10 to 60% were studied. The results showed that, under the conditions used, the unit power cost during single purpose operation would be in the range 5.9 to 6.1 mils/kw-hr at the generator bus-bar, compared to an estimated 6.6 mils/ kw-hr. for the non-boiling plant. These gains are realized under conditions of relatively high specific powers, greater than 32 kw/ft., relatively modest bulk outlet steam quality (greater than 20%), and high-pressure steam (1000 psia or higher) used directly in the turbines. During the dual market period, the power rate is about the same. An increase of 0.2 mils/kw-hr. is indicated when the specific power is lowered- Capital investment savings of perhaps four to five million dollars may be possible, but savings of this magnitude have little effect on the over-all power cost. The power cost savings stated above …

Continuous Denitration Status of Development, January 12, 1955

Experimental studies on continuous denitration performed in 321 Building resulted in the development of an agitated-through-type calciner. The performance of a paddle-agitated 4-in.-diameter by 44-in.-long reactor was sufficiently promising to warrant construction of a 16-in.-diameter by 8 ft.-long semi-plant scale model. This progress report summarizes the results of studies to date employing the semi-plant scale calciner.
