Bentonite Deposits of the Northern Black Hills District Wyoming, Montana, and South Dakota

From abstract: The northern Black Hills bentonite mining district includes parts of Crook County, Wyo., Carter County, Mont., and Butte County, S. Dak. Within this district, many beds of bentonite occur interspersed with sedimentary strata of Cretaceous age that have an average total thickness of about 3,000 feet and consist chiefly of marine shale, marl, and argillaceous sandstone. The bentonite beds occur in formations ranging upward from the Newcastle sandstone to the lower part of the Mitten black shale member of the Pierre shale. Tertiary (?) and Quaternary deposits of gravel, sand, and silt are present on extensive terraces, and deposits of such materials also extend along stream courses in all parts of the district.

The most important uranium deposits are in or near granitic to quartz monzonitic intrusions of probable Cretaceous age in central and northern Idaho, westernmost Montana, and northeastern Washington.

Chromite Deposits in Central Part Stillwater Complex, Sweet Grass County, Montana

From abstract: The chromite deposits of the central part of the Stillwater complex lie in a belt 9 miles long between the valleys of Boulder River and the West Fork of the Stillwater River in Sweet Grass County, Mont. The chromite occurs as layers near the middle part of the ultramafic zone in the lower part of the complex. The layers, originally horizontal, have been tilted so that they dip northeastwards at angles ranging from nearly horizontal to nearly vertical, and are cut by many cross faults, the largest with a horizontal offset of 3,000 feet. Investigations by the United States Geological Survey and the United States Bureau of Mines have shown that in this belt there are 5 sections ranging in length from 850 to 3,800 feet along the strike where the continuity and grade of the chromite can be reasonably inferred.

The field work that is the basis of the ensuing report consisted of mapping the geology and determining stratigraphic relationships in sufficient detail to evaluate the mineral resources, especially the oil and gas possibilities in the area.

From abstract: The Rosebud coal field, named from Rosebud Creek and the village of Rosebud, includes an area of about 1,050 square miles and forms a very small part of the subbituminous and lignite coal fields of eastern Montana and Wyoming and the western part of the Dakotas. It is an irregularly bounded tract lying south of the Yellowstone River in eastern Rosebud County and western Custer County and measures 50 miles from east to west and 28 miles from north to south. It adjoins the Forsyth coal field, on the west, the Ashland coal field, on the south, and the Miles City coal field, in part, on the north.

From abstract: The Richey-Lambert coal field is an area of about 900 square miles in Richland and Dawson Counties, eastern Montana, along the divide between the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers. In this region only flat-lying continental rocks occur near the surface. About 300 feet of the Lebo shale member and about 930 feet of the coal-bearing Tongue River member of the Fort Union formation, of Eocene age, are exposed in the area. Deposits of terrace gravel at two levels in the field are tentatively correlated with the gravel on the Cypress Hills, Saskatchewan, which has been assigned to the Oligocene by the Canada Geological Survey, and with the Flaxville gravel, of upper Miocene or Pliocene age.

Geology and Mineral Resources of North-Central Chouteau, Western Hill, and Eastern Liberty Counties, Montana

From abstract: This report describes a rectangular area of about 2,600 square miles in Chouteau, Hill, and Liberty Counties, Mont., adjacent to the international boundary. The area is a portion of the Missouri Plateau, a section of the Great Plains province, and lies between the Highwood Mountains, Bearpaw Mountains, and Sweetgrass Hills, of north-central Montana. The southern part of the area is drained by the Missouri River and its tributary Marias River, but the northern part is drained by the Milk River. These streams are trenched in narrow valleys several hundred feet deep. The land surface between them is a rolling plain interrupted by very broad, shallow valleys that probably were eroded during the Pleistocene epoch by large streams whose courses were doubtless diverted from time to time by the continental glaciers. These valleys are now occupied only by very small creeks.

The Eastern Front of the Bitterroot Range, Montana

From abstract: The origin of the gneissic rocks on the eastern border of the Idaho batholith in the Bitterroot Range, near Hamilton, Mont., has long been in dispute. Lindgren regarded these rocks as the product of stresses related to a normal fault along the front of the range with an eastward dip of about 150. He thought both the hanging wall and the footwall had moved, with a total displacement along the fault plane of at least 20,000 feet. The faulting was believed to have been so recent as to be a major factor in the present topography. Langton appears to accept the concept of faulting but to regard the gneissic rocks as formed much earlier from a granitic rock that was more silicic and older than the Idaho batholith.

Abstract: A number of radioactivity anomalies and secondary uranium minerals have been found in the Rimini area near the northwestern margin of the Boulder batholith. Most of the anomalies are associated with chalcedonic vein zones that consist of one or more veins of cryptocrystalline and fine-grained quartz in silicified quartz monzonite and alaskite. Seventeen of the anomalies were found along veins that contain base and precious metals; nine were along veins in the vicinity of the village of Rimini from which there has been production of lead, silver, zinc, and gold.

From abstract: A mineral resource survey of the Ruby Mountains Wilderness Study Area (MT-076-001) was made in 1984- 85. Thirty-two million tons of subeconomic mineral resources that average 21 percent iron occur in the Kelly iron deposit and constitute an identified resource adjacent to the southeasternmost edge of the study area. Moderate and high mineral resource potential for talc deposits occur within a large body of Archean (see geologic time chart in appendix) marble in the central part of the study area (fig. 1). The study area has a low mineral resource potential for uranium and for oil and gas sources. No phosphate deposits exist in the study area.

From summary:A mineral resource survey of a 10,610-acre part of the Blacktail Mountains Wilderness Study Area (MT-076- 002) was conducted in 1984-85. Identified subeconomic resources of barite exist in the area at the northernmost boundary, and a zone partly within the area along the northeastern boundary has a moderate mineral resource potential for silver and barite, and associated gold, copper, lead, and zinc. No producing mines occur in or adjacent to the area. The area lies within a region that is rated as having moderate energy resource potential for oil and for gas.

From abstract: A mineral resource survey was conducted in 1987 by the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines to evaluate mineral resources (known) and mineral resource potential (undiscovered) of the Sleeping Giant Wilderness Study Area (MT-075-111) in Lewis and Clark County, Montana. The only economic resource in the study area is an inferred 1.35-million-ton reserve of decorative stone (slate); a small gold placer resource is subeconomic. A high resource potential for decorative slate exists directly adjacent to the area of identified slate resource and in the northeastern part of the study area. The rest of the study area has a low potential for decorative slate. The westernmost part of the study area has a moderate resource potential for copper and associated silver in strata-bound deposits in green beds and limestone; potential is low in the rest of the study area.

From introduction: The detailed information concerning the coal deposits of the Ashland field set forth in this report has been obtained in the course of an investigation that has been conducted both as a part of the United States Geological Survey's general systematic study of western coal lands and as an aid in the administration of the public lands. With the information obtained on the location of outcrops, the number, distribution, and thickness of coal beds, the accessibility of the coal, and the thickness of the overburden, the public lands of the region are classified as to their coal value; coal-bearing lands are differentiated from noncoal-bearing lands; and the administration of the coal-land leasing law is facilitated.
