This design consists in "inner spokes [that] are inclined outwardly, and the outer spokes [that] are inclined inwardly toward their remote ends, whereby compression of the rim of the wheel is transformed into lateral thrusts on the hub, and the lateral thrusts counterbalance each other" (lines 45-51).

Machine for Packing Cotton.

Patent for a new and improved packer. This design consists "[i]n a cotton-packer, the combination of the frame, guides mounted therein, rack-bars moving in the said guides, a press-box and steam-cylinder, and heads secured to the rack-bars and moving in the press-box and cylinder, respectively, cog-wheels of different diameters journaled in the frame and meshing with the rack-bars, and anti-friction rollers pivoted in the guides and bearing against the rack-bars" (lines 4-13).

Gas Retort.

Patent for a new and improved gas-retort. This design "is to provide a new and improved retort for generating gas for illuminating or other purposes from stone coal, and being specially adapted to be used on cooking-stoves. The invention consists of a fire-pot fitting onto the eye of a stove, of a spherical retort held to turn on the said fire-pot and made of two parts, and of a gas outlet formed in one of the trunnions of the retort" (lines 7-16).
