The Resonance Absorption Spectrum of Uranium

A model for the capture spectrum of uranium is introduced in which levels occur at 7, 30, 30+D, 30+2D, ..., ev. Gamma ray and neutron widths are derived from the experimental data for values of D between 10 and 25 ev. The constants of the 7 volt level prove to be independent of D. Extrapolation, using the one level formula, gives a capture cross section at (1/40) ev of 4.9 x 10(24) cm2; this number is, however, quite sensitive to the value taken for the resonance activation. Both neutron and gamma ray widths for the higher levels are approximately proportional to D.

Physical Properties of Nickel Carbonyl

The vapor pressure of nickel carbonyl was determined with material obtained by laboratory preparation with CO and Ni powder and by purifying commercial nickel carbonyl. The observed vapor pressure data were used in the derivation of the following equations which express the vapor pressure, P, of liquid nickel carbonyl and the sublimation pressure, P/sub s/, of the solid, respectively, as a function of the absolute temperature, T: log P = 7.88431578/T and log P/sub s/ 10.1897-2173/T. The average heat of vaporization is calculated to be 7.22 plus or minus 0.01 kcal per mole and the molecular heat of sublimation of Ni(CO)/sub 4/ is 9.94 plus or minus 0.11 kcal. Extrapolation to 760 mm Hg gives a boiling point of 42.2 deg C. The melting point of purified nickel carbonyl occurred at -17.2 deg C. The sensitivity of the melting point to the effect of impurities was demonstrated with commercial nickel carbonyl which melted at-19.4 deg C before purification, at --18.3 deg C after distillations at 0 deg C, and at -17.2 deg C after sublimation at -25 deg C. Multi-Velocity Serber-Wilson Neutron Diffusion Calculations

Certain types of neutron diffusion calculations were considerably simplified when the Serber.Wilson Method was introduced about eight years ago. This method, semi-empirical In nature and named after its co-discoverers, was first formulated for the one-velocity isotropic theory and applied to spherical geometries. Within these limits it has in general proved to be a fairly accurate method. If restricted source-free case it has, in addition, turned out to be quite manageable both analytically and numerically.

Some Potential Uses of Nuclear Explosives in the Conservation and Development of Water Resources

Abstract. The peacetime application of nuclear explosives to the conservation and development of our national water resources is, at this time, of sufficient promise to present some of the possibilities publicly. In nuclear explosives man has at his disposal and service, a powerful source of energy - a new tool - that we believe can be utilized safely to excavate channels and lake basins, or to create conduits of broken permeable material and underground reservoirs. In surveying the possible applications of nuclear explosives, the following ideas are among those worthy of serious consideration: (a) the use of nuclear explosives for the economic movement of large volumes of earth in the construction of earth fill dames, (b) the use of nuclear explosives for the diversion of a stream from a river system, whose flow is largely lost to the sea, into another stream channel leading to an arid section or a closed basin, (c) the use of nuclear explosives to create a recharge basin or a conduit to a subsurface aquifer for fresh water recharge, and (d) the use of nuclear explosives to create off-channel reservoirs for the elimination of saline waters through recharge to a mineralized aquifer and by evaporation.

Crystallography of Some of the Transition Element Beryllides

A crystallographic study of the transition element beryllides was undertaken in support of phase diagram work. These beryllides are very high melting, and the use of ordinary methods make it difficult to determine stoichiometry. We have succeeded in establishing the compositions and complete crystal structure description of all of the room temperature stable or metastable compounds of the beryllides of niobium, tantalum, titanium zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, chromium and molybdenum. Since some of the structures found were not previously reported, complete structure determinations had to be done.
