A survey was made of methods potentially useful for the determination of the oxygen to metal ratio in mixed oxides of uranium and plutonium. A gravimetric method was selected as being the most promising for adaptation in a short period of time. Development of the technique resulted in a reliable method which meets the requirements for unirradiated mixed oxide fuel samples. The method, based upon an equilibrium weight at 700 deg C in dry hydrogen, was shown to be capable of measurement of O/(Pu + U) ratios in 20% PuO/sub 2/--80% UO/sub 2/ pellets with a standard deviation of plus or minus 0.001. In the utilization of nuclear heat energy, liquid metal could be used in a vapor cycle to propel a column of liquid metal in a jet pump or injector where electrical energy could be extracted by means of a MHD arrangement. The recirculating system is being studied as a means of increasing the efficiency. Results are described briefly for a preliminary run made using steam and water; the efficiency of conversion of steam kinetic energy to liquid kinetic energy was approximates 20%. The possible causes of the low efficiency and some of the methods for decreasing hydraulic losses are outlined. (D.L.C.)

The basic concept of the SNAP 2 reliability program is discussed. The basis for the reliability requirements for SNAP 2 is presented, and the fundamental methods by which these requirements can be accomplished are described. The reliability objectives for the system, a description of basic failure characteristics, and design considerations for reliability margins and component selection are presented, together with test plans for establishing reliability margins and for demonstrating system reliability. Progress is reported on research directed toward. the development of adhesives, which are compatible with explosives; the measurement of nuclear properties of polonium isotopes; residue adsorption; separation and purification of isotopes; thermal diffusion theory analyses; emission strength analyses for neutron sources; and krypton-85 counting methods development. Qualification testing of SNAP 10A fusistors was performed. Test operations included: visual inspection, insulation resistance, dielectric strength, and d-c resistance testing prior to subjecting the fusisters to environmental testing; opening-time testing prior to, during, and following vacuum and temperature testing; and insulation resistance, dielectric strength, and d-c resistance testing following environmental applications of temperature, vacuum, and sinusoidal vibration.
