Fabrication and Properties of Hot-Pressed Uranium Mononitride (open access)

Fabrication and Properties of Hot-Pressed Uranium Mononitride

Dense UN specimens for property tests were fabricated primarily by an isostatic hot-pressing technique in which consolidated powder sealed in a refractory metal container was subjected to a 10,000-psi external gas pressure at 1480 to 1540 deg C for 3 to 4 hr. The thermal conductivity of uranium mononitride increased from 0.04 cal/(cm)(sec)( deg C) at 200 deg C to 0.06 cal/ (sec)(cm/sup 2/)( deg C) at 1000 deg C, which by an integrated thermal- conductivity criterion, makes it some eight times more effective than UO/sub 2/ in transferring heat. Thermal-expansion coefficients of 9.0 x 10/sup -6/ per deg C and 9.9 x 10/sup -6/per deg C over the ranges 20 to 800 deg C and 20 to 1600 deg C, respectively, were measured. UN retained about 80% of its room- temperature hardness at 1100 deg C. Above this temperature, the hardness dropped rapidly with increasing temperature. The specific heat is cal per g mole can be conveniently described by the equition C = 13.32 + 1.19 x 10/sup -3/ T --2.10 x 10/sup 5/ T/sup -2/ over the range 273 to 142 3 deg K. Electrical conductivity dropped with increasing temperature a metallic characteristic. Anomalies were noted in attempts …

A Program of Basic Research on Mechanical Properties of Reactor Materials. Quarterly Progress Report for the Period Ending June 30, 1963

Deformation Mechanisms in BCC Metals. Thin-film microscopic observations are presented for rolled single TA crystals. These observations show numerous areas almost devoid of slip markings. One specimen was annealed in air at 400 deg C to pin all the dislocations; transmission micrography of the annealed specimen indicates a quite low temperature for dialocation rearrangements. A correlation was found between the temperatures of the stages in the amplitude-dependent modulus defect and the deformation-peak temperatures for Nb. It is concluded that much inore extensive dislocation motion is possihle for a given applied stress amplitude at temperatures above the alpha peak than below, and that limited dislocation motion is possible at very low temperatures if the applied stress is great enough. Stored-Energy Release in Deformed Metals. Stored-energy-release measurements were made on Puron and Ferrovac E grades of pure Fe for several grain sizes and strain levels. The results indicate that the stored energies and dislocation densities in Fe are much smaller than in Cu and other metals. (D.L.C.)

Pathfinder Atomic Power Plant. End Closure Development for Low Enrichment Superheater Fuel Rods (open access)

Pathfinder Atomic Power Plant. End Closure Development for Low Enrichment Superheater Fuel Rods

Research on a welding process for closing the ends of pathfinder fuel elements is reported. Optimum parameters for certain variables (amperage, weld travel, preheat, etc.) affecting weld quality were determined, and two modified end cap designs were investigated and found to reduce weld sensitivity to certain variables. Use of chills on the fuel tube greatly improved weld puddie geometry and microstructure. Optimum weld parameters for rods containing UO/sub 2/ fuel were experimentally established. (D.C.W.)

Aerospace Safety Re-Entry Analytical and Experimental Program, SNAP 2 and 10A (Interim Report)

Before a reactor is launched into a satellite orbit about the Earth, the hazards to the population must necessarily be considered in the event that the reactor re-enters the Earth' s atmosphere and possibly impacts with the ground. Analytical and experimental efforts for calculating these potential hazards as they apply to SNAP-2 and -10A are described. (auth)

A Perturbation Method for Solving the Angle Dependent Nucleon-Meson Cascade Equations (open access)

A Perturbation Method for Solving the Angle Dependent Nucleon-Meson Cascade Equations

A method is described for obtaining an approximate solution to the equations describing a nucleon-meson cascade by using the angular dependence of the secondary particle production kernels as a perturbation. The usefulness of the method lies in the fact that in a slab geometry the equations that must be solved numerically are essentially the same as those that are used in the straight-ahead approximation and have been solved previously.
