In order to design radiation ports and beam line components, it is essential to understand the distribution of power from a radiation source as a function of both the photon energy and the solid angle of emission. In this preliminary note, we assemble all the formula involved for the case of a bending magnet and a wiggler. Typical distributions are presented for the case of 6-Gev radiation.

Because of the undefined risk in the development and use of geothermal energy as a thermal energy source, the Department of Energy Division of Geothermal Energy solicited competitive proposals for field experiments in the direct use of geothermal energy. Twenty-two proposals were selected for cost-shared funding with one additional project co-funded by the State of New Mexico. As expected, the critical parameter was developing a viable resource. So far, of the twenty resources drilled, fourteen have proved to be useful resources. These are: Boise, Idaho; Elko heating Company in Nevada; Pagosa Springs, Colorado; Philip School, Philip, South Dakota; St. Mary's Hospital, Pierre, South Dakota; Utah Roses near Salt Lake City; Utah State Prison, Utah; Warm Springs State Hospital, Montana; T-H-S Hospital, Marlin, Texas; Aquafarms International in the Cochella Valley, California; Klamath County YMCA and Klamath Falls in Oregon; Susanville, California and Monroe, utah. Monroe's 164 F and 600 gpm peak flow was inadequate for the planned project, but is expected to be used in a private development. Three wells encountered a resource insufficient for an economical project. These were Madison County at Rexburg, Idaho; Ore-Ida Foods at Ontario, Oregon and Holly Sugar at Brawley, California. This interim report summarizes results from the Tandem Mirror Experiment (TMX) during the period January to July 1980 and describes the physics experiments, the machine operation, and the diagnostics that were added to TMX during this period. This operating period followed the initial proof-of-principle TMX experiments and predated the ongoing final experiments preceding TMX shutdown for modification to TMX Upgrade. The results described in this report include measurements of plasma parameters and plasma behavior which confirm the initial TMX results that demonstrated that the tandem mirror configuration can be generated and sustained by neutral beam injection and that the tandem mirror configuration improves confinement of magnetic mirror systems.

The vaporization of a spherically symmetric liquid droplet homogeneously heated by a high-intensity laser pulse is investigated on the basis of a hydrodynamic description of the system composed of the vapor and ambient gas. In the limit of convective vaporization, the boundary conditions at the fluid-gas interface are formulated by using the notion of a Knudsen layer across which translational equilibrium is established. Numerical solutions to the hydrodynamic equations exhibit the existence of two shock waves propagating in opposite directions with respect to the contact discontinuity that separates the ambient gas and vapor. 17 refs., 6 figs.

An Asdex-type local divertor is proposed for ITER consisting of a copper poloidal field coil adjacent to the plasma. Estimates indicate that the power consumption is acceptable. Advantages would be a much reduced heat load not very sensitive to magnetic perturbations. A disadvantage is the finite lifetime under neutron bombardment that would require periodic replacement of the divertor coils in a reactor, but probably not in ITER because of its limited fluence. Another disadvantage would be poorer blanket coverage unless the divertor coil itself incorporates breeding material. 3 figs.

A recent series of experiments have provided spatially resolved near field images of several candidate x-ray lasing transition in neon-like, nickel-like, and hydrogen-like ions from laser-produced plasmas. From these time-gated, spatially, and spectrally resolved measurements the source size for the J = 0 - 1 and the J = 2 - 1 transitions in Ne-like selenium have been determined. Source regions as small as 50 ..mu..m have been observed on transitions with gain-length products >9. In addition, we have obtained the first experimental evidence for the amplification of spontaneous emission in the nickel-like ions of europium and ytterbium. Gains of order 1 cm/sup -1/ and gain-length products of up to 3.8 are observed on the J = 0 - 1, 4d-4p transitions in Eu + 35 at 65.26 and 71.00 A. Analogous transitions in Yb = +42 have been identified and some evidence for ASE has been observed. 7 refs., 11 figs.

The importance of confinement for obtaining a unitary high-energy limit for QCD is discussed. Minijets'' are argued to build up non-unitary behavior{endash}when k{sub T} {gt} {Lambda} is imposed. For minijets to mix with low k{sub T} Pomeron Field Theory describing confinement, and give consistent asymptotic behavior, new quarks'' must enter the theory above the minijet transverse momentum scale. The Critical Pomeron is the resulting high-energy limit. 22 refs.

The measured magnetic field parameters of the quadrupoles which comprise the final triplet lens system for the SLAC Linear Collider intersection region are presented here. The minimum design gradient specifications for these quadrupoles are 1.7T/cm at 4.6K and 1.6T/cm at 4.6K in a 0.6T external solenoidal field. These gradients are about three times larger than those available with the conventional iron/copper quadrupoles now used in the SLC. Superconducting quadrupoles of two lengths have been specified for the SLC triplets. The effective magnetic length of type Q/sub 1/ is 66.498 +- 0.305cm and of Q/sub 2/ is 121.106 +- 0.61cm. The superconducting performance characteristics of the quadrupoles that have been measured are: maximum critical current as a function of bath temperature, rate of change of magnetic field, and as a percentage of the ''short sample''. ''Short sample'' performance is defined as the current reached by the cable in a perpendicular magnetic field equal to the peak field in the winding at bath temperature. The maximum gradient achieved during testing was 2.04T/cm (4.25K) and 2.07T/cm (3.2K). This represented 95% of the strand critical current value. The magnetic length of the first Q/sub 2/ was measured to be 120.85 +- .1 cm. The …

The D0 test beam transporter mainframe assembly is a structural frame lying in a horizontal plane and designed to support and orient the D0 test liquid argon calorimeter properly in the test beam. Azimuthal adjustment is provided by a turntable with a mean radius of 64 inches, supported on a pressurized oil bearing. Angular positioning is achieved by an hydraulic actuator attached to the turntable which places force against an arm on the calorimeter vessel, causing it to rotate. Vertical positioning is adjusted by jacks at four corners of the platform. Preliminary design calculations were based on simplifying and conservative assumptions which rendered the problem statically determinate. The purpose of this analysis is to provide more precise information on stress and deflection by including redundancies and structural detail. 2 figs., 1 tab.
