Solid state chemistry of rare earth oxides. Technical progress report, 1974--1975. [High-resolution electron optical methods at 3 A resolution]

Electron microscope images obtained at about 3A resolution for Pr/sub 7/O/sub 12/ (and isomorphous Zr/sub 3/Sc/sub 4/O/sub 12/) are in excellent agreement with calculated images based upon the structure determined separately by total profile neutron powder diffraction analysis. The image calculation programs establish the efficacy of lattice image interpretation in structural terms for these types of related phases whose structures are as yet beyond conventional means to determine. Such images for several other intermediate phases are interpreted and structures proposed. Finally, images of crystals which can be made to undergo reaction within the microscope are interpreted according to the structures involved. These studies reveal the role of intergrowth and topotaxy in these systems. (auth)

Radiation blistering in metals and alloys (open access)

Radiation blistering in metals and alloys

Radiation blistering in solids has been identified as a process leading to damage and erosion of irradiated surfaces. Some of the major parameters governing the blistering process in metals and some metallic alloys are the type of projectile and its energy, total dose, dose rate, target temperature, channeling condition of the projectile, orientation of the irradiated surface plane, and target material and its microstructure. Experimental results and models proposed for blister formation and rupture are reviewed. The blistering phenomenon is important as an erosion process in applications such as fusion reactor technology (plasma-wall interactions) and accelerator technology (erosion of components and targets). A description of methods for the reduction of surface erosion caused by blistering is included.

Brayton isotope power system. Phase I (Ground demonstration system) configuration control document (CCD) (open access)

Brayton isotope power system. Phase I (Ground demonstration system) configuration control document (CCD)

The Brayton Isotope Power System (BIPS) Ground Demonstration System (GDS) configuration is defined. The GDS is configured to be similar to a conceptual flight system design referred to herein as the BIPS Flight System (FS). The Brayton Isotope Power System is being developed by the ERDA as a 500 to 2000 W/sub e/, 7 year life 3.5 W/sub e/ per pound space power system. The system was a closed Brayton dynamic system to convert energy from an isotope heat source at a net efficiency exceeding 25%. This CCD is for the first phase of the ERDA program to have a qualified system ready for launch by June 30, 1981. Phase I is a 36 month effort to provide a conceptual design of the flight system and design, fabricate and test a ground demonstration system. The baseline system is predicated on using two of the multihundred-watt isotope heat sources being developed for the ERDA by GE. The Ground Demonstration System will simulate, as closely as possible, the Brayton Isotope Power Flight System and will utilize components and technology being developed by NASA for the Mini-Brayton rotating unit (AIRPHX), recuperator (AIRLA) and heat source assembly (GE). The Ground Demonstration System includes a …

Numerical study of rotating relativistic stars (open access)

Numerical study of rotating relativistic stars

The equations of structure for rotating stars in general relativity are presented and put in a form suitable for computer calculations. The results of equilibrium calculations for supermassive stars, neutron stars, and magnetically supported stars are reported, as are calculations of collapsing, rotating, and magnetized stars in the slowly changing gravitational field approximation. Progress on the conceptual design of a mirror hybrid fusion--fission reactor (open access)

Progress on the conceptual design of a mirror hybrid fusion--fission reactor

A conceptual design study was made of a fusion-fission reactor for the purpose of producing fissile material and electricity. The fusion component is a D-T plasma confined by a pair of magnetic mirror coils in a Yin-Yang configuration and is sustained by neutral beam injection. The neutrons from the fusion plasma drive the fission assembly which is composed of natural uranium carbide fuel rods clad with stainless steel and helium cooled. It was shown conceptually how the reactor might be built using essentially present-day technology and how the uranium-bearing blanket modules can be routinely changed to allow separation of the bred fissile fuel. Diamond-turning HP-21 beryllium to achieve an optical surface (open access)

Diamond-turning HP-21 beryllium to achieve an optical surface

Investigation of diamond turning on beryllium was made in anticipation of obtaining an optical finish. Although results of past experiences were poor, it was decided to continue diamond turning on beryllium beyond initial failures. By changing speed and using coolant, partial success was achieved. Tool wear was the major problem. Tests were made to establish and plot wear as a function of cutting speed and time. Slower speeds did cause lower wear rates, but at no time did wear reach an acceptable level. The machine, tools, and procedure used were chosen based on the results of preliminary attempts and on previous experience. It was unnecessary to use an air-bearing spindle because tool failure governed the best finish that could be expected. All tools of diamond composition, whether single crystal or polycrystalline, wore at unacceptable rates. Based on present technology, it must be concluded that beryllium cannot be feasibly diamond turned to achieve an optical finish. (22 fig.) (auth)

Leak hunting problems associated with controlled thermonuclear fusion experiments (open access)

Leak hunting problems associated with controlled thermonuclear fusion experiments

The LLL 2xIIB experiment is briefly described. The vacuum system uses mercury diffusion pumps and titanium sublimation. The base pressure of the guard vacuum is about 10$sup -5$ torr and about 2 x 10$sup -7$ torr in the high vacuum space using the diffusion pumps only. After titanium sublimation, the high vacuum pressure drops into the 10$sup -9$ torr range. A procedure for leak testing using a special sniffer probe is described. (MOW)
