Trajectory-Wise Analysis of Immobilized Plasma Including Electrons. Machine Calculations (open access)

Trajectory-Wise Analysis of Immobilized Plasma Including Electrons. Machine Calculations

Abstract: "The trajectory analysis of an immobilized plasma has been generalized to include the presence of electrons having a far similar radius of gyration and, therefore, fitting readily into the broader scale structure established by the ions. This problem has been adapted to machine calculations and the results for various strengths plasmas have been calculated."

Contaminated Equipment Renovation Shop. A Preliminary Study (open access)

Contaminated Equipment Renovation Shop. A Preliminary Study

The intent of this study is to establish more completely the justifications for constructing a decontamination plant as outlined in Budget Item B 5720, ``Containmented Equipment Renovation Shop,`` FY 1957, Plant and Equipment Projects. In particular, the economic incentives have been explored. The question or idea has been investigated of assigning a dollar value to engineering information which might be obtained from examining contaminated equipment which has failed from unknown causes. Heretofore it has not been possible to examine such equipment because suitable decontamination facilities have not been available. An effort has been made to uncover all possible uses for the proposed facility in order that the estimated capital and operating costs might be evaluated in terms of all the functions which the proposed plant might perform.

Effects of Elevated Temperatures on the Properties of Portland Cement Mixtures Related to Surface Removal and Decontamination (open access)

Effects of Elevated Temperatures on the Properties of Portland Cement Mixtures Related to Surface Removal and Decontamination

From abstract: The effect of heat on the surface removal of concrete was studied by conducting brush tests on samples which had been subjected to prolonged high temperatures in an oven or in direct contact with an oxy-propane flame. Other methods of heat-treating surface layers of concrete were investigated by direct application of an oxy-aluminum torch on the surface and by the exothermic chemical reactions of pyrotechnic compositions placed directly on the surface.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN THE FIELD OF THORIUM CHEMISTRY AND METALLURGY. Monthly Progress Report for April 16 to May 15, 1955

A continuous belt drier capable of handling 1000 lbs of oxycarbonate per day was completed, installed, and operated to produce a satisfactory product for chlorination. An experimental chlorinator was also completed. All necessary pants were completed for the fabrication of Horizons' Mark VI continuous electrolytic cell. Evaluations of oxycarbonate materials for chlorination wiih varying chlorinating agents were made, and many of the variables such as water content and CO/sub 2/ values were established. Extremely ductile rods were obtained from the direct extrusion of Th metal powder. Plans were completed for the Mark VI electrolytic cell. Work was continued toward the development of a semi-continuous operating electrolytic cell of 7500-a rated capacity. (D.E.B.)

Interaction of a Free Flame Front With a Turbulence Field (open access)

Interaction of a Free Flame Front With a Turbulence Field

"Small-perturbation spectral-analysis techniques are used to obtain the root-mean-square flame-generated turbulence velocities and the attenuating pressure fluctuations stemming from interaction of a constant-pressure flame front with a field of isotropic turbulence in the absence of turbulence decay processes. The anisotropic flame-generated turbulence velocities are found to be of about the same intensity as those of the incident isotropic turbulence, the lateral turbulence velocities being always lower, but the longitudinal velocity is somewhat increased for flame-temperature ratios over 7" (p. 599).

Preliminary Data on Rain Deflection from Aircraft Windshields by Means of High-Velocity Jet-Air Blast (open access)

Preliminary Data on Rain Deflection from Aircraft Windshields by Means of High-Velocity Jet-Air Blast

From Summary: "A preliminary experimental investigation is being conducted to determine the feasibility of preventing rain from impinging on aircraft windshields by means of high-velocity jet-air blast. The results indicate that rain deflection by jet blast appears feasible for flight speeds comparable with landing and take-off speeds of interceptor-type jet aircraft; however, attainment of good visibility through the mist generated by raindrop breakup presents a problem. For the simulated windshield and the lower windshield angles used in the investigation, air-flow rates of the order of 3.3 pounds per minute of unheated air per inch of windshield span were required for adequate rain deflection at a free-stream velocity of 135 miles per hour."
