Lift, drag, and longitudinal stability at Mach numbers from 0.8 to 2.1 of a rocket-powered model having a tapered unswept wing of aspect ratio 3 and inline tail surfaces

Report presenting an investigation of a configuration of a body of fineness ratio 16.9, an unswept wing of aspect ratio 3, and a taper ratio of 0.4, and incline tail surfaces who was aeropulsed continuously in pitch during free flight with and without a sustainer rocket motor operating. A range of Mach numbers from 0.8 to 2.1 was tested. Results regarding drag, normal force and pitching moment, flow conditions at the horizontal tail, buffeting and model vibrations, and cross coupling are provided.

Low-Speed Investigation of the Effects of Wing Tanks and Speed Brakes on the Static Stability of a Model Having a 40 Degree Swept Wing

Memorandum presenting a low-speed wind-tunnel investigation conducted to study the effects of pylon-mounted wing tanks and speed brakes on the static stability characteristics of a model with sweptback wing and tail surfaces. The wing of the model was of aspect ratio 3.45 and was swept 40 degrees at the quarter-chord line. Results for the basic configuration and modifications to the basic configuration are provided.

Additional measurements of the low-speed static stability of a configuration employing three triangular wing panels and a body of equal length (open access)

Additional measurements of the low-speed static stability of a configuration employing three triangular wing panels and a body of equal length

From Introduction: "The results of an investigation of the low-speed static stability of a simplified model of such an arrangement having one of the airfoils placed vertically on top of the body and the other two as wing panels having negative dihedral are presented in reference 1. In order to provide information for predicting the effects of changes in the basic configuration on the low-speed stability characteristics presented in reference 1, additional measurements have been made."

A theoretical study of the aerodynamics of slender cruciform-wing arrangements and their wakes (open access)

A theoretical study of the aerodynamics of slender cruciform-wing arrangements and their wakes

A theoretical study is made of the pressures, loadings, forces, and vortex wake associated with certain cruciform wing arrangements. For 45 degree bank, the wake of a cruciform wing is treated numerically with 40 vortices and analytically with 4 vortices. Comparisons are made with water-tank measurements, and the calculation of loads on cruciform tails by reverse flow considered.

Effects of Elevated Temperatures on the Properties of Portland Cement Mixtures Related to Surface Removal and Decontamination (open access)

Effects of Elevated Temperatures on the Properties of Portland Cement Mixtures Related to Surface Removal and Decontamination

From abstract: The effect of heat on the surface removal of concrete was studied by conducting brush tests on samples which had been subjected to prolonged high temperatures in an oven or in direct contact with an oxy-propane flame. Other methods of heat-treating surface layers of concrete were investigated by direct application of an oxy-aluminum torch on the surface and by the exothermic chemical reactions of pyrotechnic compositions placed directly on the surface.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN THE FIELD OF THORIUM CHEMISTRY AND METALLURGY. Monthly Progress Report for April 16 to May 15, 1955

A continuous belt drier capable of handling 1000 lbs of oxycarbonate per day was completed, installed, and operated to produce a satisfactory product for chlorination. An experimental chlorinator was also completed. All necessary pants were completed for the fabrication of Horizons' Mark VI continuous electrolytic cell. Evaluations of oxycarbonate materials for chlorination wiih varying chlorinating agents were made, and many of the variables such as water content and CO/sub 2/ values were established. Extremely ductile rods were obtained from the direct extrusion of Th metal powder. Plans were completed for the Mark VI electrolytic cell. Work was continued toward the development of a semi-continuous operating electrolytic cell of 7500-a rated capacity. (D.E.B.)
