Studies on the Experimental Pathology and Biochemistry of the Pulmonary Granulomatosis of Beryllium Workers. Section II, Consolidated Progress Report. Supplement: a Review of the Physical Chemistry of Beryllium

The status of research is reviewed in a study of pulmonary granulomatosis in beryllium workers. Equipment for use in dust exposure studies is described. Preliminary results are reported from studies on the tissue distribution and pathological effects of beryllium dust in rats; the physical chemistry of solutions of beryllium salts; the effects of beryllium on enzyme systems, and the effects of ascorbic acid on beryllium excretion.

Pb-Sn Alloy Replacements for UO2 Density Standards (open access)

Pb-Sn Alloy Replacements for UO2 Density Standards

A correlation between the optical densities if the Pb-Sn alloy system and UO2 with respect to Co^60 gamma radiation has been determined. This enables one to fabricate density standards of whatever geometry may be desired for one in the gamma absorptiometer by simply casting a Pb-Sn alloy of the proper composition to correspond to the density required.

Preliminary Report on pH Control by Ion Exchange in High pH Systems (open access)

Preliminary Report on pH Control by Ion Exchange in High pH Systems

The primary purpose of a cleanup system in a recirculating water loop is to maintain the best possible water quality conditions. This is normally accomplished by continuously purifying all or a portion of the coolant. A secondary objective of the cleanup system is to help maintain the system pH at a constant value. A system that will satisfactorily accomplish both of these objectives is at times difficult to obtain. Generally the pH control characteristics are sacrificed in favor of the more important cleanup requirements. A somewhat new approach to the problem pf cleanup system design appears to offer a solution to this problem for high pH systems.

The [Sigma/Alpha] Branching Ratio Of [Y*1] (open access)

The [Sigma/Alpha] Branching Ratio Of [Y*1]

Recently a T=1 resonance in the [Alpha w] system called [Y*1] has been observed with a mass of 1385 Mev. Two types of resonances have been predicted that might relate this observation to other elementary-particle interactions: (1) P 3/2 resonances in the Alpha w and Sigma w systems predicted by global symmetry corresponding to the (3/2, 3/2) resonance of the wN system, (2) a spin-1/2 Y-w resonance resulting from a bound state in the KN system. The position and width of the observed [Y*1] resonance agree with both theories but since the spin and parity have not yet been determined, it is impossible at present to distinguish between the two theoretical interpretations.

The Biological Behavior of Organic Compounds Containing Radiophosphorus (open access)

The Biological Behavior of Organic Compounds Containing Radiophosphorus

The study was undertaken with the objective of observing the distribution in the rat of organic compounds of phosphorus labelled with the P32 isotope as tracer. The fate of several of these compounds was studied in animals bearing tumors. The distribution of inorganic phosphate in animal tissues is well known but was included in this work for comparison with the organic phosphorus compounds.

Review of the Corrosion Product Radioactivity Program at the Army Package Power Reactor : Alco R & D report (open access)

Review of the Corrosion Product Radioactivity Program at the Army Package Power Reactor : Alco R & D report

Abstract: An analysis and a summary are.given of the radioactivity buildup program at the Army Package Power Reactor during the last nine months. ยท Due to the wide fluctuation of water and crud results, only general interpretations can be made with this data. Metal test coupon data indicate a substantially greater buildup on Croloy 16-1 metal than on Type 304 stainless steel. Coupled with the decreased ability to remove the radioactivity buildup on Croloy 16-1 by conventional descaling techniques, the implication is that this metal might pose a serious problem for use as steam generator material. It was emphasized, however, that results to date ae only preliminary and extensive additional experimentation would be required to reach more definite conclusions.

Theory of Asymmetric Arrays of Control Rods in Nuclear Reactors (open access)

Theory of Asymmetric Arrays of Control Rods in Nuclear Reactors

Introduction: Seldom does the actual arrangement of control elements in a nuclear reactor confers to the ideal and convenient mathematical array. In order to achieve shim control. safety and regulation, it is desirable to design with rods of different sizes and materials. With given fuel element arrangement, typically in square or hexagonal lattice spacing, there will be rods located at different distances form the center of the core and from each other. As the reactor operates, absorbers will be withdrawn, leaving further asymmetries in the location of those remaining. It is the purpose of this report to develop in detail a two-group diffusion theory with as complete generality as possible. The method is as yet restricted to the unreflected core, or to the reflected core by use of reflector savings and bare equivalent geometries.

Mechanical design aspects of a tandem mirror fusion reactor (open access)

Mechanical design aspects of a tandem mirror fusion reactor

Two ''plugs'' of dense plasma at either end of a central solenoid cell form the basis of a new mirror fusion power plant concept. A central cell blanket design is presented. Modules on crawler tracks serviced by remote welding and handling machines of very simple design are important features resulting from linear axisymmetric geometry. Three blanket designs are considered and the best one presented in some detail. It has lithium as the breeder material, helium cooled. ''Plug'' magnet field strengths must be high. A novel magnet is presented to satisfy the physics of the end plugs. Beam sources at 1,200 KV present special problems. Methods of voltage standoff, arc damage control, and neutralization are discussed. New secondary containment ideas are presented to allow removable roof sections of balanced design.

Free-flow variability on the Jess and Souza Ranches, Altamont Pass (open access)

Free-flow variability on the Jess and Souza Ranches, Altamont Pass

A central monitoring computer was installed on each ranch. The computers were connected by communication cables to 50 turbines on the Souza Ranch and 150 turbines on the Jess Ranch. Anemometers were installed on every other turbine on 12-foot booms at 35 feet above ground level (AGL). Spacing between anemometers was approximately 200 feet in the crosswind direction by 500 feet in the parallel direction. A total of 23 turbines on the Souza Ranch was instrumented in this fashion, as well as two multi-level meteorological towers. On the Jess Ranch, 77 turbines were instrumented; about half at 35 feet AGL and half at 50 feet AGL, plus four additional towers. Wind data were collected for approximately a 100 hour period on each ranch. All turbines were shut down during these periods so that no turbine wakes would be present. The data periods were selected by the meteorologist to insure that they occurred during typical spring-summer flow regimes. The terrain features upwind of the site appear to play as significant a role in the flow variability as terrain features within the site.
