X-Band Crab Cavities for the CLIC Beam Delivery System

The CLIC machine incorporates a 20 mrad crossing angle at the IP to aid the extraction of spent beams. In order to recover the luminosity lost through the crossing angle a crab cavity is proposed to rotate the bunches prior to collision. The crab cavity is chosen to have the same frequency as the main linac (11.9942 GHz) as a compromise between size, phase stability requirements and beam loading. It is proposed to use a HE11 mode travelling wave structure as the CLIC crab cavity in order to minimise beam loading and mode separation. The position of the crab cavity close to the final focus enhances the effect of transverse wake-fields so effective wake-field damping is required. A damped detuned structure is proposed to suppress and de-cohere the wake-field hence reducing their effect. Design considerations for the CLIC crab cavity will be discussed as well as the proposed high power testing of these structures at SLAC. Design of a crab cavity for CLIC is underway at the Cockcroft Institute in collaboration with SLAC. X-Band RF Gun Development (open access)

X-Band RF Gun Development

In support of the MEGa-ray program at LLNL and the High Gradient research program at SLAC, a new X-band multi-cell RF gun is being developed. This gun, similar to earlier guns developed at SLAC for Compton X-ray source program, will be a standing wave structure made of 5.5 cells operating in the pi mode with copper cathode. This gun was designed following criteria used to build SLAC X-band high gradient accelerating structures. It is anticipated that this gun will operate with surface electric fields on the cathode of 200 MeV/m with low breakdown rate. RF will be coupled into the structure through a final cell with symmetric duel feeds and with a shape optimized to minimize quadrupole field components. In addition, geometry changes to the original gun, operated with Compton X-ray source, will include a wider RF mode separation, reduced surface electric and magnetic fields.

X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy of plutonium solid species.

We present XANES at the L{sub III} edge for four plutonium solid phases: Pu(III)F{sub 3}, Pu(IV)O{sub 2}, NaPu(V)O{sub 2}CO{sub 3}, and Ba{sub 3}Pu(VI)O{sub 6}. These correspond to the four important oxidation states in the process chemistry and environmental chemistry of plutonium. By a fitting method that uses an arc tangent function and gaussian curves, it was possible to reproducibly determine the edge energy and distinguish among the four oxidation states. These data demonstrate a 1.85 {+-} 0.20 eV shift per oxidation state.

X-ray Conversion Efficiency of high-Z hohlraum wall materials for indirect drive ignition

We measure the conversion efficiency of 351 nm laser light to soft x-rays (0.1-5 keV) for Au, U and high Z mixtures 'cocktails' used for hohlraum wall materials in indirect drive ICF. We use spherical targets in a direct drive geometry, flattop laser pulses and laser smoothing with phase plates to achieve constant and uniform laser intensities of 10{sup 14} and 10{sup 15} W/cm{sup 2} over the target surface that are relevant for the future ignition experiments on NIF. The absolute time and spectrally-resolved radiation flux is measured with a multichannel soft x-ray power diagnostic. The conversion efficiency is then calculated by dividing the measured x-ray power by the incident laser power from which the measured laser backscattering losses is subtracted. After {approx}0.5 ns, the time resolved x-ray conversion efficiency reaches a slowly increasing plateau of 95% at 10{sup 14} W/cm{sup 2} laser intensity and of 80% at 10{sup 15} W/cm{sup 2}. The M-band flux (2-5 keV) is negligible at 10{sup 14} W/cm{sup 2} reaching {approx}1% of the total x-ray flux for all target materials. X-Ray Microdiffraction Characterization of DeformationHeterogeneities in BCC Crystals

The deformation behavior of BCC metals is being investigated by x-ray microdiffraction measurements (mu XRD) for the purpose of characterizing the dislocation structure that results from uniaxial compression experiments. The high brilliance synchrotron source at the Advanced Light Source (Lawrence Berkeley National Lab) and the micron resolution of the focusing optics allow for the mapping of Laue diffraction patterns across a sample. These measurements are then analyzed in order to map the distribution of residual stresses in the crystal. An important finding is the observation of Laue spot ''streaking'', which indicates localized rotations in the lattice. These may represent an accumulation of same-sign dislocations. Theoretical modeling of the diffraction response for various slip systems is presented, and compared to experimental data. Preliminary results include orientation maps from a highly strained Ta bicrystal and a less highly strained Mo single crystal. The orientation maps of the bicrystal indicate a cell-like structure of dense dislocation walls. This deformation structure is consistent with previous OIM studies of the same crystal. The results suggest that mu XRD may be a particularly useful tool for microscale studies of deformation patterns in a multi-scale investigation of the mechanisms of deformation that ranges from macroscopic deformation tests …

X-Ray Photoionized Plasmas in the Laboratory

The advanced spectroscopic capabilities of the new X-ray telescopes Chandra and XMM lead to a need for improved benchmarking of models for the photoionized accretion-disk plasmas which represent over half of known astrophysical X-ray sources. They report the first laboratory experimental results using 120 TW, 180 eV Z-pinch plasmas to drive iron samples into the photoionized equilibrium. The pinch spectrum, temperature, power and uniformity have been characterized in order to qualify it as a photoionization driver. Preliminary time-integrated (8 {angstrom} to 18 {angstrom}) and time-resolved (12.5 {angstrom} to 16 {angstrom}) absorption and emission spectra of photoionized L-shell Fe and K-shell Na and F were observed using X-ray crystal spectrometers. Plans for upcoming experiments are also discussed.

The X-Ray Spectra of the Last-Row Elements

Abstract: X-ray energy level diagrams as given in the literature are tabulated for radium, thorium and uranium. A level scheme for protoactinium is derived from the published data. After a brief review of the use of X-ray data in studying outer electronic structure, it is pointed out that differences in the X-ray spectra should exist depending on whether the outer electrons are in f or d orbitals. The observed separation of the OI and OII levels in thorium and uranium indicated that the f levels lie lower than the d. This hypothesis also provides a reasonable explanation for the observed differences between the MIV and MV absorption edges and MIV and MV levels calculated from the emission spectra and the LIII edge.

In May 2002, the Advanced Photon Source (APS) was reorganized into three divisions: the Accelerator Systems Division (ASD), the APS Operations Division (AOD), and the Experimental Facilities Division (XFD). Parts of the former User Program Division (UPD) were incorporated into XFD; other parts were incorporated into AOD. This Progress Report summarizes the main scientific and technical activities of XFD and parts of the former UPD from January 2001 through June 2002. The report is divided into two major sections, (1) SRI-CAT Beamlines, Technical Developments, and Scientific Applications, and (2) User Technical Support, which describe the technical activities and research and development (R&D) accomplishments of the XFD and former UPD personnel in supporting the synchrotron radiation instrumentation (SRI) collaborative access team (CAT) and the general APS user community. Also included in this report is a comprehensive list of publications by XFD and UPD staff members during the time period covered by this report.

The Yakima Urban Growth Area (UGA) is a developing and growing urban area in south-central Washington. Despite increased development, the Yakima River and its tributaries within the UGA continue to support threatened populations of summer steelhead and bull trout as well as a variety of non-listed salmonid species. In order to provide for the maintenance and recovery of these species, while successfully planning for the continued growth and development within the UGA, the City of Yakima has undertaken the Yakima Habitat Improvement Project. The overall goal of the project is to maintain, preserve, and restore functioning fish and wildlife habitat within and immediately surrounding the Yakima UGA over the long term. Acquisition and protection of the fish and wildlife habitat associated with key properties in the UGA will prevent future subdivision along riparian corridors, reduce further degradation or removal of riparian habitat, and maintain or enhance the long term condition of aquatic habitat. By placing these properties in long-term protection, the threat of development from continued growth in the urban area will be removed. The Year 2000 computer problem (Y2K) is a widespread software issue that can affect all computers form the tiniest "embedded" microprocessor to the largest mainframe computer. There are a number of causes of this problem, the most frequent being the use of two digits instead of four to represent the year. As the century digits change from 19 to 20 there is a very real possibility that programs will make errors when processing dates. This paper discusses the origin of the problem, looks into symptoms and failure modes, describes how organizations are attacking the problem, and then spends some time discussing the international security aspects.

The Year 2000 Computer Problem: Congressional Issues

Many computers were designed to store a two-digit number for the year, which makes the year 2000 indistinguishable from 1900. Unless they are corrected, many computers will not be able to process dates beyond the year 2000, and may cause many costly problems in commerce and government. In the 106th Congress, hearings are being held and will continue to provide the public with the most accurate information available on the status of Y2K remediations at federal agencies, state and local agencies, private sector entities, and international organizations. Congress may also consider additional legislation to ensure that private sector systems are compliant, to establish emergency preparedness measures to address problems that might occur, and to limit liability associated with Y2K failures for manufacturers and industry groups.

YMP Engineered Barrier Systems Scaled Ventilation Testing

Yucca Mountain, approximately 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, has been selected as the site for the nation's first geologic repository for high level nuclear waste. The Yucca Mountain Project (YMP) is currently developing the design for the underground facilities. Ventilation is a key component of the design as a way to maintain the desired thermal conditions in the emplacement drifts prior to closure. As a means of determining the effects of continuous ventilation on heat removal from the emplacement drifts two series of scaled ventilation tests have been performed. Both test series were performed in the DOE/North Las Vegas Atlas facility. The tests provided scaled (nominally 25% of the full scale emplacement drift design) thermal and flow process data that will be used to validate YMP heat and mass transport codes. The Phase I Ventilation Test series evaluated the ability of ambient ventilation air to remove energy under varying flow and input power conditions. The Phase II Ventilation Test series evaluated the ability of pre-conditioned ventilation air to remove energy under varying flow, input temperature and moisture content, and simulated waste package input power conditions. Twenty-two distinct ventilation tests were run.
