Two new production records were set during April, for processed U and Pu production. 0.9 tons sheared NRX fuel were dissolved in Redox. Discrepancies in Pu yield are being studied. Alternate methods of recovering Np are being evaluated. The Purex prototype facility will be converted to the anion exchange process. Alternate designs for a Purex miniature service dissolver were reviewed. The Purex HA column will be replaced.

Purex and Redox plants operated satisfactorily. Pu production exceeded commitments. The continuous calciners in UO{sub 3} plant experienced difficulty, but the monthly commitment was exceeded. Capital costs for conversion of B plant to recover Cs and Ce have increased. For future processing of E metal, several 3-ton batches were dissolved in Redox. The continuous Task I prototype is being tested for startup of production facilities. Redox product solutions generally have higher waste losses than these from Purex material. The continuous anion exchange prototype will also be tested. Engineering studies were completed of two facets of Purex Phase II expansion, plant conversion to two cycles, and expansion to a rate of 25.8 tons U/day. A proposal requests authority to expand Purex to capacity factor 3.2 along with the two-cycle conversion. The Pu trifluoride process review indicated that conversion to the PuF3 process is not likely. Separations plant dissolver capacity potential for the next 5 yr was studied. (DLC)

Record highs were set for Pu output in separations plants and for amount of U processed in Purex. UO{sub 3} production and shipments exceeded schedules. Fabrication of 200 and 250 Model assemblies is reported. Unfabricated Pu production was 8.5% short. Nitric acid recovery in Purex and Redox is reported. Prototype anion exchange system for Pu was tested in Purex. Hinged agitator arms with shear pin feature was installed in UO{sub 3} plant H calciner. Operation of continuous type Task I, II facility improved. DBBP is considered for Recuplex. Methods for Pu in product solutions agreed to within 0. 10%. Purex recycle dock shelter is complete. Other projects are reported.

The Choice in Thorium Oxide Slurries for the Prevention of Caking in Circulating Systems

A qualitative theory for cake formation in ThO2 slurries is presented. The sphere formation which occurs in "Standard" slurry can be explained on the same basis. The irregular and unpredictable yield strength is easily fitted into the theory. On the basis of this theory, the writer has been led to the conclusion that only colloidally stable slurries, or slurries with crystallites or comminution-resistant particles which are large enough to overcome colloidal effects (probably larger than 0.1u) can be used with assurance in the ThO2 reactor system. This conclusion holds for 300 gm/kg slurries as well as for more concentrated mixtures.

Deflection Equations for Various Loading of Circular-Arc Curved Beams

In analyzing stresses, deflections, and forces in piping and certain structural systems, it is useful to have a set of equations giving the deflections at any point of a curved beam in terms of the various loads acting on the beam. This technical report presents the deflection equations for a curved circular-arc beam of variable length. The cases treated include in-plane and out-of-plane bending due to forces and moments applied to the end of the beam in three principal directions, and uniformly distributed loads applied along the beam in these three directions. Deflections were calculated by the strain energy method using Castigliano's theorem.

"Drag characteristics of a series of related conical and circular-arc afterbodies are presented for Mach numbers from 0.6 to 1.3. Drag was obtained from pressure measurements on the boattail and solid base. The boattail angles tested ranged from 0 degrees to 45 degrees for ratios of base diameter to maximum body diameter ranging from 0 to 1.0" (p. 1).

Experiments on Antiprotons: Antiproton-Nucleon CrossSections

In this paper experiments a r e reported on annihilation and scattering of antiprotons in H{sub 2}O , D{sub 2}O, and O{sub 2}. From the data measured i t i s possible to obtain an antiproton-proton and a n antiproton-deuteron c r o s s section a t 457 Mev (lab). Further analysis gives the p-p and p-n c r o s s sections a s 104 mb for the H-p reaction c r o s s section and 113 mb for the p-n reaction c r o s s section. The respective annihilation cross sections a r e 89 and 74 mb. The Glauber correction necessary in order to pass from the p-d to the p-n c r o s s section by subtraction of the p-p c r o s s section i s unfortunately large and somewhat uncertain. The data a r e compared with the p-p and p-n c r o s s sections and with other results on p - p collisions.

Experiments on Antiprotons: Cross Sections of Complex Nuclei

Experiments are described that have been designed to measure separately annihilation and reaction cross sections for antiprotons of approximately 450 MeV on oxygen, copper, silver, and lead. A new and more luminous spectrograph has been built for this experiment. The antiproton cross sections a r e compared with total proton cross sections, and are found to be larger by a factor varying from 1.74 for oxygen to 1.39 for silver. Calculations based on the optical model give a reasonable connection between these cross sections and the 6-p and 6-n cross sections. Finally, the information available on antiproton production cross sections is collected. There are indications that a free nucleon is several times as effective as a bound one for producing antiprotons.

Extended operation of turbojet engine with pentaborane

A full-scale turbojet engine was operated with pentaborane fuel continuously for 22 minutes at conditions simulating flight at a Mach number of 0.8 at an altitude of 50,000 feet. This period of operation is approximately three times longer than previously reported operation times. Although the specific fuel consumption was reduced from 1.3 with JP-4 fuel to 0.98 with pentaborane, a 13.2-percent reduction in net thrust was also encountered. A portion of this thrust loss is potentially recoverable with proper design of the engine components. The boron oxide deposition and erosion processes within the engine approached an equilibrium condition after approximately 22 minutes of operation with pentaborane.

EXTENSION OF OPERATING LIFE OF KAPL-30 THIMBLE

Due to extended low-temperature operation of the KAPL30 carbon steel thimble in the Materials Testing Reactor, a radiation damage evaluation was undertaken. Radiation damage in carbon steel may not be annealed under lowtemperature operating conditions. The data used in the evaluation are presented, and an extension of thimble life to 16 reactor cycles is recommended, subject to review if further low-temperature operation occurs. (D.E.B.)

Report presenting flight tests on an FJ-3 airplane to determine the flight characteristics of a carrier-type airplane with area-suction and blowing boundary-layer control on the trailing-edge flaps. Measurements were made of lift, drag, and bleed-air requirements for the different types of boundary-layer control systems. Results regarding lift, drag, flow requirements, performance, pilots' opinions, and approach-speed criteria are provided.

Full-Scale Investigation of Several Jet-Engine Noise-Reduction Nozzles

"A number of noise-suppression nozzles were tested on full-scale engines. In general, these nozzles achieved noise reduction by the mixing interference of adjacent jets, that is, by using multiple-slot-nozzles. Several of the nozzles achieved reductions in sound power of approximately 5 decibels (nearly 70 percent) with small thrust losses (approx. 1 percent). The maximum sound-pressure level was reduced by as much as 18 decibels in particular frequency bands" (p. 1249).
