An evaluation of foaming potential in the IDMS melter

The present DWPF flowsheet calls for the chemical treatment of waste sludge with 90 wt% formic acid prior to the addition of the Precipitate Hydrolysis Aqueous (PHA) product. An alternative processing methodology, denoted the ``Nitric Acid Flowsheet``, has been proposed. In the application of this flowsheet, nitric acid would be used to neutralize sludge base components (hydroxides and carbonates) prior to the addition of late wash PHA. The late wash PHA will contain sufficient quantities of formic acid to adequately complete necessary reduction-oxidation (REDOX) reactions. The use of this flowsheet may result in a change in the nominal concentrations of two of the major REDOX reaction participants: formate (HCOO{sup minus}) and nitrate (NO{sub 3}{sup minus}).

Surfactant studies for bench-scale operation. Fifth quarterly technical progress report: July 1, 1993--September 30, 1993

A phase II study has been initiated to investigate surfactant-assisted coal liquefaction, with the objective of quantifying the enhancement in liquid yields and product quality. This report covers the fifth quarter of work. The major accomplishments were: (1) Completion of coal liquefaction autoclave reactor runs and related analysis with Illinois no. 6 coal at 400{degrees}C with and without surfactant and/or catalyst at pressures of 1700 psig; (2) A literature search into the effect that lignin has in the coprocessing of coal; and (3) Presentation of a report summarizing the first year of work on this task at the Annual Liquefaction Contractors Review Conference. Results from this quarter show that lignosulfonate surfactant continues to increase overall MAF conversion of Illinois no. 6 coal at temperatures up to 400{degrees}C and produces an improvement in light boiling fraction distillate over the base case of no surfactant addition.

The use of intelligence information to identify the foreign interests of entities involved with DOE programs

This report investigates whether DOE activities could benefit from greater and more consistent access to intelligence information on selected entities with foreign interests. It does not cover dual-use and munition commodities. The investigation determined what information was available from the national intelligence community and law enforcement agencies that would have prevented DOE contracts with selected entities if the information had been available and regulations regarding contracts with selected entities had been enforced.

Reverse osmosis performance with solutions containing tri-n-butyl phosphate (open access)

Reverse osmosis performance with solutions containing tri-n-butyl phosphate

Tests were conducted to determine whether the reverse osmosis (RO) units at the F/H Effluent Treatment Facility (ETF) at the Savannah River could be made to process solutions containing tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP). It was desired to test whether operation at a feed pH other than neutral would improve performance. Test results are discussed in this report and indicate that little improvement in the water flux can be expected at other pH values.

Columbia River temperature study at 100-F Area (open access)

Columbia River temperature study at 100-F Area

In August 1946 it was discovered that two effluent lines near the Columbia River at Hanford were damaged. The upstream effluent line has broken off 37 fact from the shoreline and the downstream effluent line had been bent and partly broken seventeen feet from shoreline and has swung downstream to a point about 50 feet from shorelines. This study was made to determine how fast and in what fashion the temperature of the effluent water is dissipated in the Columbia River under the present conditions and to compare this to a previous survey made when the effluent lines were believed to be in their original position.

Radiometallury examination of three overbore split failures from 3062C (RM C-422) (open access)

Radiometallury examination of three overbore split failures from 3062C (RM C-422)

Three overbore elements, 75Zl2, 75Zl4, and 75Zl5 were discharged from 3062C on April 16, 1962 with longitudinal splits after an exposure of 676. The three elements, two of which had completely split apart, were received on July 5, 1963 to determine the cause of failure. All three elements had failed in the same manner with several full length longitudinal cracks in the uranium extending radially from the canwall to about midway in the core. The failure mechanism was found to be the same as that observed during the examination of worm-tracked overbore elements under RM 456 in which incipient failures had occurred from excessive core temperatures. In two out of the three worm-tracked elements the interior core temperatures had exceeded the beta transformation point as a result of severe cycling conditions. In these three ruptures from 3062C the maximum core temperature had not reached the beta phase; however, the failures were undoubtedly caused by excessive hoop stresses resulting from high internal core temperatures.
