The corrosion of aluminum in dilute solutions: laboratory studies (open access)

The corrosion of aluminum in dilute solutions: laboratory studies

After it had been decided that aluminum was to be used as a corrosion-resistant material with good heat transfer properties, it was desired to determine the operating conditions to be used in the water-cooled Handford plant in order to avoid danger of corrosion penetration of thin aluminum parts. The studies here reported were undertaken with the object of determining these conditions by investigating the effects of all the known variables which might influence the corrosion behavior of aluminum in a water-coolded plant at HEW. The addition of hydrogen peroxide to the testing solutions was the only effort made to simulate special conditions at the plant.

Corrosivity of Uranyl Fluoride to Certain Metals (open access)

Corrosivity of Uranyl Fluoride to Certain Metals

Abstract: "The results obtained from the tests conducted for the purpose of determining the corrosivity of a 30 percent-solution of uranyl fluoride to various metals indicate that stainless steels (type 302, 304, 321 and 316) have very good resistance; while monel, nickel and aluminum, respectively, exhibit diminishing resistance. Stainless steel, type 316, was the most resistant of the specimen tested."

''Cutie Pie,'' A portable radiation instrument (open access)

''Cutie Pie,'' A portable radiation instrument

A portable beta and gamma radiation meter of exceedingly small dimensions and weight has been developed. User acceptance has been more enthusiastic than any previous instrument of its type. The circuit, using one Victoreen V-32 tube, is the simplest electronic circuit possible for radiation work and gives high sensitivity. Stability exceeds anything of comparable sensitivity which has come to our attention. The short term stability is due to a circuit which prevents emission before the cathode reaches operating temperature. Long term stability has been improved by evacuating the tube enclosure and switch. The complete, one unit instrument, weighs four pounds two ounces, and is carried with a pistol grip. Exclusive of chamber and handle, its dimensions are 3'' wide, 6 1/2'' long, and 5'' high. The case is formed of aluminum and is designed to give excellent visibility of the meter. Three ranges of approximately 50, 500 and 5000 mr/hr have been incorporated in the instruments. The instrument has been named ''Cutie Pie'' due to its diminutive size.

Ditching Tests of a 1/8-Scale Model of the Chance Vought XF6U-1 Airplane, TED No. NACA DE319 (open access)

Ditching Tests of a 1/8-Scale Model of the Chance Vought XF6U-1 Airplane, TED No. NACA DE319

Tests were made with a 1/8-scale dynamically similar model of the Chance Vought XF6U-1 airplane to study its behavior when ditched. The model was ditched in calm water at the Langley tank no. 2 monorail. Various landing attitudes, speeds, and conditions of damage were simulated. The behavior of the model was determined from visual observations, by recording time histories of the accelerations, and by taking motion pictures of the ditchings. From the results of the tests it was concluded that the airplane should be ditched at the near-stall, tail-down attitude (12 deg). The flaps should be fully extended to obtain the lowest possible landing speed. The wing-tip tanks should be jettisoned. The underside of the fuselage will be critically damaged in a ditching and the airplane will dive violently after a run of about three fuselage lengths. Maximum longitudinal decelerations up to about 7g and maximum vertical accelerations up to about 5g will be encountered.
