The Marysville, Montana, Geothermal Project: Environmental Analysis of the Deep Geothermal Research Well

The objective of this research project is to investigate a geothermal anomaly of high heat flow discovered in 1969 in central Montana, and to determine how this natural resource might be developed as a source of useful energy. Under Phase I, the natural resource will be explored, drilled, and modeled at an estimated cost of $2,588,935 over a 3-year period. Phase II, depending upon the nature of the heat source, will be developing the resource under a cooperative effort of government and private industry. This environmental analysis is intended to cover the drilling and logging operations noted under Phase I, the only work being undertaken at this time. As can be seen from Figure 1, further tests may be run at this site in later phases of the study. But since the nature of these tests are highly dependent on the results of Phase I, it is not considered productive to speculate on their environmental impact. As is show, however, any later experiments would cover a range of underground experiments, some of which consume water and others which would produce water. Before a meaningful analysis of such work can be written, it will be necessary to analyze the results of …

Analysis of a quench event in the 20-in. Nb--Ti magnet model constructed by G. Danby et al.

Measurements of the voltage and currcnt that resulted from a quench of a superconducting magnet were studied and a simple computer model of this process was developed. Large layer-tolayer voltages were generated by the quench and methods reducing these were suggested and examined. (auth)

Biomedical engineering support. Quarterly progress report, October 15, 1972--February 15, 1973

During the quarter covered (October 15, 1972 to February 15, 1973), additional models of the nuclear engine were implanted in calves to evaluate the chronic effects of weight and size. Further characterization of the bench test heart pump was performed, The effect of pump rate on cardiac output was evaluated. The effect of outflow (anterial) pressure on cardiac output was evaluated. Bjork- Shiley valves with stainless steel disks and pyrolitic carbon disks were tested and the effect of cardiac output evaluated. A design of a quick connect system to enable rapid connection of the atrial cuffs and anterial graphs to the blood pump was undertaken. Molds of the implantable version of the ventricles were completed, and construction techniques and evaluation of the ventricles is now in progress. A protocol for the implantation of the pump mechanism into calves for testing is under consideration. (auth)

Salt waste volume reduction by sodium removal (open access)

Salt waste volume reduction by sodium removal

A literature searcha nd preliminary experiments were carried out to determine the feasibility of reducing salt waste volumes by the removal of sodium and purifying the sodium as metal for reuse or less restricted storage for use in the long-term storage of Hanford's radioactive salt waste. Included in the experimental part of the study were oxalate precipitation of sodium, preparation of chloride feed for ecletrolysis, denitration experiments, carbon reduction of sodium-cesium compounds, and distillation of sodium metal for decontamination. Eaeh of these steps was found tn be feasible, but mans problems exist. The most favorable process probable includes: evaporation and denitratipn (possibly preceded be a scavenging precipitatioal, reduction with carbon and distillation or sodium metal from the reaction mixture at low pressures, and purification of sodium metal be filtration and distillaton. At alternative to the first step might be oxalate precipitaton of the sodium. Considerable development work remains before at integrated process could be demonstrated. (auth)

Solutions of the scalar Helmholtz equation in the elliptic cylinder coordinate system (open access)

Solutions of the scalar Helmholtz equation in the elliptic cylinder coordinate system

A method for determining the eigenvalues for the scalar Helmholtz equation in the elliptic cylinder coordinate system is described. Complex expansion parameters are considered so that numerical results for physical problems involving energy dissipation as well as energy flow can be obtained. Sample numerical results are presented for the eigenvalues, radial eigenfunctions, and angle eigenfunctions. Applications of these results are discussed. (auth)

Seismic analysis Livermore pool type reactor facility, Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (open access)

Seismic analysis Livermore pool type reactor facility, Lawrence Livermore Laboratory

A seismic evaluation of the Livermore Pool Type Reactor Facility located at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory was conducted as part of a safety analysis being prepared for the Atomic Energy Commission. The safe shutdown earthquake for the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory site is defined, along with a brief discussion of its basis. The method of analysis and results are summarized for all critical components. It is concluded that the biological shield and containment building should withstand the safe shutdown earthquake without failures. The crane and heat exchanger could fail under worst-case loading conditions. Recommendations for modifying the crane and heat exchanger support are presented. (auth)

Can-rolling of beryllium ingots (open access)

Can-rolling of beryllium ingots

Aspects of hot-rolling cast-beryllium billets canned in 304 stainless steel are examined. Emphasis is placed on the development of the proper rolling schedule to completely convert the columnar cast structure to a uniform equiaxed one. Also emphasized are curling difficulties found in rolling this two-metal composite. The curling is found to depend chiefly on friction between ths billet and work rolls. Lubrication and roll surface finish are found to be the key variables which in turn control friction. Curling is best prevented by having a higher friction coefficient on the bottom billet surface than on the top during rolling. (auth)

Discussion of glass-water interactions. Physical and chemical processes (open access)

Discussion of glass-water interactions. Physical and chemical processes

Leaching data for the alkali and alkaline earth silicate glasses are reviewed. The mechanism is based on the structure being dominated by SiO/sub 4/ tetrahedra forming a random network by sharing their corners (bridging oxygens). Dealkalization of the glass is initiated by the proton adsorption on to the glass surface. The intermediate to long-term interaction is characterized by a steady state between dealkalization and lattice attack such that the leached zone maintains a constant thickness. (DLC)

Correlation of Substructure With Mechanical Properties of Plastically Deformed Aisi 304 and 316 Stainless Steel. Progress Report, January 1--March 31, 1973

The recovery behavior of cold-worked AISI -316 stainless steel was studied using hot hardness. Hot hardness and substructure of AISI 304 stainless steel were correlated with tensile data, and transmission electron microscopy was carried out. The substructure of Incoloy 800 tensile tested at 800 to 1400 deg F was studied. (DLC)
