Biomedical engineering support. Quarterly progress report (open access)

Biomedical engineering support. Quarterly progress report

During the quarter covered by this progress report (July 15October 15, 1972), the power requirements of a bench test heart pump were determined. Cardiac output response, peak pusher cup forces, and power efficiencies were also determined. These measurements were made in vitro. Several geometries of connectors for the heart pump were evaluated for fit in dead calves to determine a practical configuration. Two models of the nuclear engine were implanted in calves to evaluate the chronic effects of engine weight and size. (auth)

Test of the External Muon Identifier Efficiency (open access)

Test of the External Muon Identifier Efficiency

We wish to measure the EMI efficiency at hadron momenta higher than the 3 GeV used at the Beavatron. We propose to use the 30 M{sup 3} bubble chamber as the momentum and spatial analyzer of charged hadrons both of the incident beam and those final state hadrons of interactions that occur within the chamber. We would use the EMI modules as mounted on the bubble chamber vacuum tank to measure the efficiency of the EMI absorbers (coils and zinc) over a wide range of momenta. A hadron signature would be either the lack of a proportional chamber (pc) encoding within the '96% muon-circle' or a multiple PC encoding. We shall attempt to identify {pi}-{mu} decays in the chamber to use as a source of muons. Such a test would give us experience in spatially reconstructing tracks within the chamber and in projecting their trajectories out to the EMI detector modules. The early portion of this test could utilize whatever hadron beam the NAL bubble chamber group would be using at the time. We would make a copy of an adequate number of the original frames and compare the film quality with the original ones to test whether the EMI …

Biomedical engineering support. Annual report (open access)

Biomedical engineering support. Annual report

The purpose of this research was to provide the artificial heart design information necessary for the proper development of an implantable nuclear power supply for the artificial heart. A Kwan-Gett hemispherical artificial heant made of silicone rubber was attached to a mock circulation instrumented with pressure, volume and fiow transducers and measurements made of power input to the artificial heant at various locations, source of power losses and efficiencies of the artificial heart under a variety of pumping conditions, volumetric efficiency, pressure required to move the diaphragm of the artificial heat, required motion of the heant diaphragm and pumping characteristics of the antificial heant. The in vitro measurements have been verified by in vivo experiments in calves. The preliminary design of a pumping chamber for the nuclear powered heart has been completed. (auth)

Physics of gas cooled reactors (open access)

Physics of gas cooled reactors

From meeting on new developments in reactor physics and shieiding calculations; Lake Kiamesha, New York, USA (12 Sep The temperature coefficient of the HTOR is composed of a strong negative Doppler coefficient and a positive moderator coefficient, the net effect being about -10 x 10/sup -5// deg C at operating temperature. the positive moderator coefficient is a result of the absence of significant density coefficients and the nuclear characteristics of U- 233. In addition, selected iission products, principally Xe-135, contribute positive components to the temperature coefficient. Current estimates of the value of the temperature coefficient in the HTGR are presented along with recent experimental data pertinent to the subject. (11 references) (auth)
