I. THE THEORY OF ABERRATIONS OF QUADRUPOLE FOCUSING ARRAYS. II. ION OPTICAL DESIGN OF HIGH QUALITY EXTRACTED SYNCHROTRON BEAMS WITH APPLICATION TO THE BEVATRON

In Part One they formulate in a general way the problem of analyzing and evaluating the aberrations of quadrupole magnet beam systems, and of characterizing the shapes and other properties of the beam envelopes in the neighborhood of foci. They consider all aberrations, including those due to misalignments and faulty construction, through third order in small parameters, for quadrupole beam systems. One result of this study is the development of analytic and numerical techniques for treating these aberrations, yielding useful expressions for the comparison of the aberrations of different beam systems. A second result of this study is a comprehensive digital computer program that determines the magnitude and nature of the aberrations of such beam systems. The code, using linear programming techniques, will adjust the parameters of a beam system to obtain specified optical properties and to reduce the magnitude of aberrations that limit the performance of that system. They examine numerically, in detail, the aberrations of two typical beam systems. In Part Two, they examine the problem of extracting the proton beam from a synchrotron of 'H' type magnet construction. They describe the optical studies that resulted in the design of an external beam from the Bevatron that is …

COMPUTER DATA PROCESSING SYSTEM. PROJECT ROVER, 1962 (open access)

COMPUTER DATA PROCESSING SYSTEM. PROJECT ROVER, 1962

ABS>A system was created for processing large volumes of data from Project ROVER tests at the Nevada Test Site. The data are compiled as analog, frequency modulated tape, which is translated in a Packard-Bell Tape-to-Tape converter into a binary coded decimal (BCD) IBM 7090 computer input tape. This input tape, tape A5, is processed on the 7090 by the RDH-D FORTRAN-II code and its 20 FAP and FORTRAN subroutines. Outputs from the 7090 run are tapes A3, which is a BCD tape used for listing on the IBM 1401 input-output computer, tape B5 which is a binary tape used as input to a Stromberg-Carlson 40/20 cathode ray tube (CRT) plotter, and tape B6 which is a binary tape used for permanent data storage and input to specialized subcodes. The information on tape B5 commands the 40/20 to write grids, data points, and other information on the face of a CRT; the information on the CRT is photographed on 35 mm film which is subsequently developed; full-size (10" x 10") plots are made from the 35 mm film on a Xerox 1824 printer. The 7090 processes a data channel in approximately 4 seconds plus 4 seconds per plot to be made …

A DISCUSSION AND BIBLIOGRAPHY OF CURRENT LITERATURE CONCERNING VAN ALLEN BELTS FOR USE IN SNAP SPACE ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES (open access)

A DISCUSSION AND BIBLIOGRAPHY OF CURRENT LITERATURE CONCERNING VAN ALLEN BELTS FOR USE IN SNAP SPACE ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

Discussion of theories on particle motion in electric and magnetic fields precedes examination of theories on the source of the inner and outer Van Allen belts. Theories for the inner belt propose solar cosmic ray injection and galactic cosmic ray injection as the source of the protons. Neutron albedo is particularly examined but seems to be unaccountable for the proton belt. Neutron albedo and injection from the sun are also considered as possible sources of the electrons in the outer belt. Fluctuations, intensities, and distributions of the belts are also discussed, and the connection between the belts and aurora displays is examined. Fluxes, spectra, and particle intensities are displayed, and the effects of magnetic storms on the belts are analyzed. 150 references. (D.C.W.)

Correlation of Liquid Fraction in Two-Phase Flow With Application to Liquid Metals (open access)

Correlation of Liquid Fraction in Two-Phase Flow With Application to Liquid Metals

A generalized correlation for the liquid fraction in twophase flow is presented which is proposed for use with all iluids, including liquid metals. The correlation is based on isothermal, two-phase, two-component liquid fraction data for liquid Hg--N/sub 2/ and water-air. Liquid fraction is shown to be a function of the Martinelli flow modulus and liquid/gas density and viscosity ratios. Good correspondence is indicated between the liquid fraction predicted by this correlation and the Martinelli-Nelson correlation for steam, experimental data for steam, and experimental data for Santowax R. Prediction of liquid fraction by this method is shown for Na, K, Rb, and Hg. Application of the method to boiling Hg, for a range of temperatures and exit qualities, is demonstrated for SNAP systems. BEAM TRANSPORT CALCULATIONS USING GRAPHS (open access)

BEAM TRANSPORT CALCULATIONS USING GRAPHS

The spread of a beam of particles can be represented by an ellipse in phase space, which represents the spread of the beam in both angle and distance. It is shown that the changes in this ellipse can be followed simply by graphical means, as the beam passes through an optical system consisting of thick and thin lenses and drift spaces. Such calculations are of value when an injected beam must be matched to an accelerator, or when a beam of particles from an accelerator must be transported to an experiment or through an anaiyzing system. The graphical calculation is quicker than a computer calculation, and should be of sufficient accuracy in most cases. The graphical calcuiation gives insight into the changes necessary in a beam transport system to give it the desired properties. (auth)

Pathfinder Atomic Power Plant. Boron Stainless Steel Control Rods for Pathfinder Reactor. Final Summary Report (open access)

Pathfinder Atomic Power Plant. Boron Stainless Steel Control Rods for Pathfinder Reactor. Final Summary Report

An extensive development, fabrication, and design analysis program was completed on 2 wt% boron stainiess steel for Pathfinder boiler and superheater control rods. Results indicated that the control rods will operate satisfactorily in the reactor under all foreseeable conditions. It was concluded that the maximum local burnup on the boiler rods is limited to 1.0 core at.% and the superheater rods to 0.5 core at.% to remain well below the onset of any deleterious effects. All stresses imposed on the material were found to be below yield strength. The deflections were calculated and were not sufficient to restrict any movement of the cruciform during reactor operations and scrams. A welding development program produced a sound fabrication method for producing the control rods. A prototype rod was extensively tested in the hot control rod drive test, including a large number of scrams. The rod showed no deleterious effects. The rods were designed to accommodate any helium release and swelling that may occur. (M.C.G.)

Mixtures of Metals With Molten Salts (open access)

Mixtures of Metals With Molten Salts

A review is presented of various types of solutions of metals in molten salts, especially in their own molten halides. With relatively little reference to the older literature, the progress made in the last 20 years is discussed. Roughly, the solutions are classified into two groups: The metal may retain, to some degree, its metallic properties in the solution, or it may lose them through strong interaction with the salt solvent. The alkali-metal systems are typical examples of the former type, while solutions of cadmium or bismuth represent the second. Equilibrium phase diagram data are presented in detail for many metal- salt systems. These include critical solution temperatures, that is, temperatures above which metal and salt are miscible in all proportions. Electrical conductivity is singled out as a most significant physical property from which conclusions on the state of the electron in the solution may be drawn. In the electronically conducting solutions, notably of the alkali metals, the electrons may be thought to resemble F centers in color-center colored crystals. In solutions where electronic conductance is absent, monomeric, dimeric, and even more highly poly, merized species of the solute metal in a low valence state must be assumed to occur. …

OXYGEN-17 NMR SHIFTS CAUSED BY Cr$sup ++$ IN AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS (open access)

OXYGEN-17 NMR SHIFTS CAUSED BY Cr$sup ++$ IN AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS

Cr{sup++} in solution produces a paramagnetic shift in the NMR absorption of 0{sup17} in C1O{sub4}{sup-}, as well as the expected paramagnetic shift for 0{sup17} in H{sub2}O. As the concentration of C1O{sub4}{sup-} increases, the shift in the H{sub2}O{sup17} absorption is diminished, and eventually changes sign. The effects are ascribed to preferential replacement by C1O{sub4}{sup-} of water molecules from the axial positions in the first coordination sphere about Gr{sup++}.
