Some Transonic Aerodynamic Characteristics of a Model Similar to the McDonnell F3H-2N Airplane

Report discussing testing of a model of the McDonnell F3H-2N to determine its pitch-up and buffet boundaries and its longitudinal stability and control data obtainable with the pulse-tail technique. Stability was found to be less at low trim angles of attack than at high trim angles of attack up to a point. The buffet boundary was not obtainable through this testing.

A low-speed experimental investigation of the effect of a sandpaper type of roughness on boundary-layer transition (open access)

A low-speed experimental investigation of the effect of a sandpaper type of roughness on boundary-layer transition

From Summary: "An investigation was made in the Langley low-turbulence pressure tunnel to determine the effect of size and location of a sandpaper type of roughness on the Reynolds number for transition. Transition was observed by means of a hot-wire anemometer located at various chordwise stations for each position of the roughness. These observations indicated that when the roughness is sufficiently submerged in the boundary layer to provide a substantially linear variation of boundary-layer velocity with distance from the surface up to the top of the roughness, turbulent "spots" begin to appear immediately behind the roughness when the Reynolds number based on the velocity at the top of the roughness height exceeds a value of approximately 600. At Reynolds numbers even slightly below the critical value (value for transition), the sandpaper type of roughness introduced no measurable disturbances into the laminar layer downstream of the roughness. The extent of the roughness area does not appear to have an important effect on the critical value of the roughness Reynolds number."

Sodium Graphite Reactor Quarterly Progress Report for October-December 1955. Section A. Section B (open access)

Sodium Graphite Reactor Quarterly Progress Report for October-December 1955. Section A. Section B

An analysis was made of the nuclear parameters for sodium graphite reactor lattices. These parameters include thermal utilization, macroscopic cross sections, thermal diffusion length, and neutron absorption. Results of all calculations are given in graphical form. Test fuel slugs for the SRE were cycled up to 500 times between 100 and 500 deg C at the rate of 2 cycles/hr. Results are tabulated. The centrifugal casting of U alloy fuel slugs is briefly evaluated. Results of the microscopic examination of the extruded ThU breeder fuels are shown. The percent elongation of graphite due to the presence of Na is shown for various temperatures. Results of wear tests on graphite are also tabulated. The behavior of Zr in liquid Na was studied, and weight gains in Zr are summarized. Analog computer studies were continued, and data are included on the temperature effects of the response time of coolant channel Na outlet temperature thermocouples, the effects of continuous rod motion and pump speed changes on the outlet Na temperature and power, and the outlet temperature as a function of scram time. The critical evaluation of B--Ni rods is tabulated. The fuel rod assembly apparatus is described. Fuel rod development is discussed. Cyclograph …

TEMPERATURE DISTRIBUTION AND THERMAL STRESS IN REACTOR CORE APPR-1 (open access)

TEMPERATURE DISTRIBUTION AND THERMAL STRESS IN REACTOR CORE APPR-1

The feasibility of the Liquid Metal Fuel Reactor (LMFR) proposed by Brookhaven National Laboratory as a source of electric power was thoroughly investigated. The reference design is based on an LMFR using U dissolved in Bi as the fuel and a thorium bismuthide in Bi slurry as the blanket. Detailed estimates of power costs are presented for electrical power stations from 226 to 904 Mw net electrical capability. (C.W.H.)

Visit report, Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation on uranium tubes (open access)

Visit report, Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation on uranium tubes

A meeting was held in Wilmington on May 15, 1956, with representatives of Allegheny Ludlum to discuss possible production by Allegheny of uranium tubes in the number needed this next year for development work on tubular elements by Savannah River. Allegheny Ludlum, through king, had expressed a possible interest in the manufacture of uranium tubes. The Allegheny representatives, in the meeting, reiterated their interest in trying to determine whether Allegheny should consider entering the business of fabricating nuclear fuel elements and nuclear fuel element components, pointing out that the did not wish to do this work in existing facilities. Woodhouse covered the work done by Nuclear Metals, Inc., on bare uranium tubes. He stated that this work had reached a stage in which there would be needed, for development purposes, a supply of the order of 500 bare tubes at Savannah River over the next twelve months. These will be in excess of Nuclear Metals ability to supply. King as a director of NMI and Pierce as a former director were familiar with the NMI situation. On question by King, Worthington stated the order-of-magnitude of the tube requirements if the development work is successful and tubes are used on a …
