Stratospheric Monitoring Program (open access)

Stratospheric Monitoring Program

"Results of the continuing stratospheric flight test evaluation program for the Del Model I Electrostatic Precipitator Sampler and the Del Electrical Discharge Altimeter are described and discussed. Only one of four balloon launches reached floating altitude. The altimeter obtained an altitude recording consistent with concurrent aneroid barocoder readings. The reported gross gamma concentration for the precipitator sampler was approximates 25 and 80% higher than those of the two simultaneous direct flow filter samples. The completion of the design and construction of two prototype units of the Del Electrical Discharge Altimeter and their laboratory evaluation are described. A preliminary design concept is presented for an operational high volume electrostatic precipitator sampler to operate with high collection efficiency at an ambient flowrate of 500 cfm throughout the altitude range 100,000 to 150,000 ft."

Equilibrium Configuration of a Plasma in the Guiding Center Limit (open access)

Equilibrium Configuration of a Plasma in the Guiding Center Limit

"We compute the equilibrium configuration of a collision-free plasma contained in an axially symmetric magnetic field. The plasma is characterized by a non-scalar pressure tensor which is obtained from a microscopic distribution function in a form suggested b the guiding center approximation. The solution is calculated in the limit where the ratio of the width to the length of the plasma region and the ratio of the gas to the magnetic pressure are both small. Boundary values at the midplane as well as the shape of the plasma appear as arbitrary parameters in the solution. We give the solution to a corresponding scalar pressure problem for comparison."

Second Quarterly Report - The Study of the Potential Applications of Radioisotope Technology to Water Resource Investigations and Utiiization

The objective of the study which is being carried out under contract AT(30-1)-2477 is the exploration of all aspects of research in water resources and supply to determine the potential for using radioisotope technology in this research. Problem areas in the application of tracers in this research are being investigated through the evaluation of past experimentation with radioisotopic techniques and through discussions with those who are active in this work. A series of suggestions relating to these techniques will de drawn up to indicate which techniques should be developed further in order that more extensive applications may be found for them.

Utilization of Radiactive Isotpoes in Coal Process Research

"With careful attention to details, tritium assays of satisfactory accuracy have been achieved on low activity standard samples by dry combustion and liquid scintillations counting of the product water. This method is faster, more accurate and dependable than the zinc fusion-ion chamber method fro low level tritium assays. At 380 degrees C, tritium loses from hydrocarbon tracers by isotopic exchange is significant and must be corrected for in tracer measurements at this elevated temperature."

Computer description APPR-1 simulator (open access)

Computer description APPR-1 simulator

The APPR-1 is a pressurized water reactor having a low specific heat fuel and a water primary coolant. The primary coolant loop delivers heat from the reactor to the steam generator. The secondary water in the steam generator is converted to steam and then taken to the turbine to drive an electrical generator. The simulation of this system is broken down into three primary areas: the neutron kinetics in the reactor which are necessary to generate the primary power function, the heat transfer in the reactor, and the heat transfer in the steam generator.

The p-n Cross Sections onf Ti47, V51, Cr52, Co59, and Cu63 from 4 to 6.5 Mov (open access)

The p-n Cross Sections onf Ti47, V51, Cr52, Co59, and Cu63 from 4 to 6.5 Mov

Absolute (p,n) cross sections have been measured for Ti47, V51, Cr52, Co59, and Cu63 at energies between 4 and 6.5 Mov. These data plus earlier measurements of the cross section for inelastic proton scattering have been used to estimate total proton absorption cross sections for V51 and Co59. An optical model calculation using parameters giving a good fit to elastic scattering measurements predicts an absorption cross section in good agreement with the measurements for Co59. For V51, some sets of parameters gave good agreement with the measured absorption cross section, but the fit to the elastic scattering data was only fair.

The Numerical Solution of a Parabolic System of Differential Equations Arising in Shallow Water Theory

"A finite difference approximation to a non-linear set of parabolic differential equations arising in shallow water theory is given. These difference equations were used to determine the shape and rate of propagation of a hum of fluid down a channel of constant depth. The hump of fluid was found to spread instead of steepen, as is the case in the usual shallow water theory."

Theory of Cusped Geometries (open access)

Theory of Cusped Geometries

"The loss of particles through a cusp of a particular containment geometry utilizing cusped magnetic field lies is considered. A velocity space loss criterion analogous to the loss cone in the mirror machine is derived. The effect of a uniform longitudinal magnetic field perpendicular to the containing field is considered and a loss criterion is derived. The effect of the longitudinal field is to decrease cusp losses.

Some Problems in Linear Graph Theory That Arise in the Analysis of the Sequencing of Jobs Through Machines (open access)

Some Problems in Linear Graph Theory That Arise in the Analysis of the Sequencing of Jobs Through Machines

"The problems of sequencing jobs through machines are discussed in a linear graph framework. The construction of feasible schedules from given technological orderings is related to the construction of transitive graphs from given component graphs. Methods of constructing transitive graphs are given and bounds on the number of different transitive graphs constructed from given components are determined. A recursive convex function defined on the transitive graphs-the job operation completion time and schedule time-is studied. Bounds on the number of different values that the schedule time can attain is obtained. Examples of multiprogramming, flow shop and machine shop scheduling are studied."

An Algorithm for Construction Feasible Schedules and Computing Their Schedule Times (open access)

An Algorithm for Construction Feasible Schedules and Computing Their Schedule Times

"An algorithm for the generation of feasible schedules and the computation of the completion times of the job operations of feasible schedule is presented. Using this algorithm, the distribution of schedule times over the set of feasible schedule—or a subset of feasible schedules—was determined for technological orderings that could occur in a general machine shop. These distributions are found to be approximately normal. Biasing techniques corresponding to “first come first serve,” random choice of jobs ready at each machine and combinations of these two extremes were used to compute distributions of schedule times."

On the Green's Function for Two-Dimensional Magnetohydrodynamic Waves. II (open access)

On the Green's Function for Two-Dimensional Magnetohydrodynamic Waves. II

"As an extension of an earlier paper the Green's function is evaluated for the Lundquist equation linearized about uniform magnetic field, constant matter density, and zero flow velocity. It is assumed that all quantities are functions of two space variables and time only. In the general magnetic field configuration considered here a pure Alfvén disturbance no longer exists; there is instead a wave with properties of both the Alfvén and fast‐slow disturbance."

The Effect of Temperature on the Width of a Small-Amplitude, Solitary Wave in a Collision-Free Plasma

"Adlam and Allen and Davis, Lust, and Schluter have studied nonlinear plane-waves, propagating normal to the magnetic field, in a cold plasma. One solution of particular interest is a solitary wave, or single pulse. We present a method for solving the analogous problem for a plasma with finite temperature, in the limiting case where the amplitude of the wave is small and where, consequently, the width of the waver is very large."

The Motion of a Charged Particle Near a Zero Field Point

"The behavior of charged particles in a plasma-free cusp field, or in a cusp field where there is very little plasma, is studied. The numerical computations described may provide a valid picture of the behavior of particles outside such a body of plasma or in the early stages of creation of such a cusped plasma in the low- beta limit. The computations provide a striking illustration of orbits which neither have constant magnetic moment nor behave so irregularly as to defy explanation."

Interpretation of Westwood, New Jersey Rainfall Data

"Progress is reported in an evaluation of fission product concentration in rain as a function of time, location, and meteorological setting. Data on rainfall collected at Westwood, N. J., were analyzed for information on the mechanisms of fallout deposition, seasonal variations in fallout, the stratospheric residence time of W/sup 185/ resulting from Operation Hardtack, and the accuracy of pot samplers for sample collection. Data from other collection stations were also analyzed for consistency with Westwood data."
