Production for Mesons by X-rays (open access)

Production for Mesons by X-rays

At the spring, 1949, meeting of the National Academy of Sciences(l) a preliminary account was given of some observations of mesons produced by the 335 Mev x-ray beam from the Berkeley synchrotron. The present paper is a progress report of this work; no claim is made for completeness, but sufficient new data are available to make publication at this time worth while, especially since some of the numerical results given in the earlier report require revision. The x-ray beam, produced by the impact of 335 Mev electrons on a 20 mil thick platinum target, has a width at half maximum of 0.0135 radian (about 1 inch at 6 feet from the target). In all but the earliest experiments the beam was further defined by a 1 inch hole in a lead block, then passed through a piece of carbon which served as the meson source. The x-ray intensity at one meter from the target was about 3500 r per hour (measured behind 1/8 inch of lead) under the best running conditions; the average was about half this. The actual exposures at the carbon meson source (6 feet from the target) ranged from 500 to 2000 r in the later runs. …

Uranium Oxide Slurry Pumping Experiments (open access)

Uranium Oxide Slurry Pumping Experiments

Abstract: Experiments on colloid milling and pumping show that uranium trioxide, when carefully dehydrated, can be dispersed in water to form a relatively stable slurry, suitable for a homogeneous slurry pile. At temperatures considerably below those of anticipated pile operation particle size growth occurs attended by increase in settling rate and decrease in viscosity. Theses properties of the slurries may be strongly affected by impurities present as well as by special operating conditions.

Flow studies in the asymmetric adjustable nozzle of the Ames 6-by 6-foot supersonic wind tunnel

Report presenting surveys of the flow of the asymmetric adjustable nozzle of the 6- by 6-foot supersonic wind tunnel, which were made to determine the uniformity of the air stream. Test techniques for minimizing the effects of stream irregularities and the results of force and pressure-distribution tests of a swept-wing model are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of these techniques.

Reynolds number effect on axial-flow compressor performance

Investigation conducted in the altitude wind tunnel to study the effect of Reynolds number on the performance of an axial-flow compressor. The compressor was operated as a part of a turbojet engine over a range of pressure altitudes and compressor-inlet Reynolds numbers. Results regarding compressor efficiency, air flow, and a comparison with axial-flow compressors of different design are provided.

A comparison of two submerged inlets at subsonic and transonic speeds (open access)

A comparison of two submerged inlets at subsonic and transonic speeds

Report presenting an investigation of the operation of two submerged-type inlets in a wind tunnel at subsonic and transonic speeds. The pressure recovery was relatively constant throughout the lower subsonic speed range. The ability of the divergent-walled inlet to operate with satisfactory pressure recovery at higher free-stream Mach numbers than was possible with the parallel-walled inlet is attributed to the difference in the boundary-layer characteristics of the two types of inlets.
