High Voltage Electron Beam Welding of W-RE Thermocouples

A series of W-5 Re/W-26 Re thermocouples have been electron beam welded at the Hamilton Standard Division at our request. This technical report is a summary of our evaluation of these joints. These weldments did exhibit incomplete fusion in cap welds and some porosity in undesirable lead junction shapes. In fairness, this was a single attempt to make a difficult joint, and the objective of ungrounded 1/16 OD clad joints was met. As noted by Hamilton, two changes are necessary to improve this joint design: (1) swaging to forming the clad end rather than crimping prior to cap welding. (2) using a fixture with rotary motion on a tilting axis.

Chemical Properties of Sodium Triethylhydroborate and Sodium Triisopropoxyhydroborate

Technical report abstract: Sodium hydride and triethylborane react to form sodium triethylhydroborate, NaBH(C2H5)3. This compound, a liquid at rooom temperature, was found to be soluble in hexane and mineral oil. A study was made of the thermal decomposition of sodium triethylhydroborate and its behavior toward boron trifluoride, boron trichloride, methyl borate, carbon dioxide, silane, and ethylene. Sodium triisopropoxyhydroborate, NaBH(OC3H7)3, was prepared and also found to be soluble in hexane and mineral oil. The reactions of this compound with methyl borate, triethylborane, silicon tetrachloride, and boron trichloride were investigated.

Thermal Annealing of Neutron Induced Discomposition in Artificial Graphite : [Part] III, Heating-During-Irradiation Experiments

Experiments are described in which the pile-induced changes in electrical resistivity and elastic modulus of graphite were investigated as functions of the sample temperature during bombardment and the amount of bombardment. The data are for relatively low bombardment times (up to ca. 20 L-units) and temperatures (up to 340*C) and are not sufficiently extensive to permit unequivocal conclusions.

The Use of the Electrical Conductivity of Graphite as a Radiation Damage and Flux Monitor. Implications of the Results to the General Theory of Radiation Damage

A method for monitoring radiation damage irradiations using the change of the electrical conductivity of graphite is described. Results of monitoring operations in a number of locations are given. An attempt is made to explain the damage rate found in the converter at CP-3. An estimate of the flux spectrum in VT-4 and the converter of CP-3 is made and the damage rate is computed according to theories of Seitz and James. It is found that the experimental results are more in accord with the predictions of Seitz. A number of corrections to James' report, ORNL-307, are noted in an appendix. It is shown that some information about the fast flux spectrum can be inferred from the radiation damage rate.

Attack on Uranium by Lithium at 600 C

The tests described in this report were static tests devised to afford a basis for a quick evaluation of the resistance of uranium to attack by lithium. The work was done at the same time as the tests of beryllium, thorium, and various engineering metals in lithium (described in ANL-4990); but the results with uranium are given in the present classified report so that the results of the other tests can be published as an unclassified document. The procedure for carrying out the tests is described in ANL-4990.

Analysis of the Combustion of Graphite-Uranium Fuels in a Fixed Bed or Moving Bed

The first step in a proposed processing method for recovery of uranium from graphite-uranium fuels consists of oxidation of the fuel by oxygen to volatilize the carbon. Residue ash from the combustion step can be treated in a variety of ways to recover and purify the uranium. The combustion step may be caried out by contacting the solid fuel in a fixed or moving bed with a stream of oxygen-bearing gas in a tubular or annular reactor. Oxidizing gas may be introduced to the reactor at several points up the reactor and there may be continuous or intermittent addition of fresh fuel and removal of residue ash.

Graduate Programs for the Health Physicist in the United States

The first man-made nuclear reactor -- or "pile" as it was then called -- was rather hurriedly improvised and operated in a crowded space under the athletic bleachers of Stagg Field at the University of Chicago on December 2, 1942. Just prior to this time, there began the assembly of a group of physicists with an unusual assignment. They were determined that radiation hazards of unprecedented proportions must be coped with successfully in the conduct of reactor programs as planned. Since these physicists were to be concerned with the health of radiation workers, they were called health physicists. There was no formal instruction available to this first group of health physicists and they perforce received training as they felt their way by firsthand experience and by trial and error. Health physics at Oak Ridge National Laboratory from the very beginning has been organized into three principal areas: applied activities, education and training and research.

Three-Velocity Neutron Diffusion Calculations for an Untamped Oralloy Sphere

The results of a series of neutron diffusion calculations relating to an untamped Orally sphere are presented in detail in this report. The three-velocity neutron transport theory was taken as the basis for the analytical work preceding the computations. This particular theory, also known as the transport approximation, is defined in LA-1271 and known to be quite accurate for assemblies primarily involving materials of large atomic weight. For a sphere of uniform density and atomic composition the transport theory has another advantage. It can readily be formulated in terms of simultaneous integral equations (in our case three), relatively simple in form, involving the collision densities [formula] and a set of parameter values describing the materials. Nb(r) is , as indicated, a function of the radial distance [formula] and the velocity index g, g - 1, 2, 3. The parameters, fifteen in number for the three-velocity theory, are comprised of the velocities, the inverse mean free paths, and the transfer coefficients.

Effect of Choice of Electrical Conductor on Power Requirements of Low Temperature Magnets

Introduction. As has been shown by Post, the total power required to produce a strong, steady-state magnetic field is strongly dependent upon the temperature at which the electrical conductor of the magnet operates. The power required for operation at very low temperature can, in some cases, be much less than that required for ambient temperature operation. The power required for low temperature operation depends on many system characteristics which include the metal chosen for the electrical conductor, the purity of this metal, and efficiency of the refrigeration equipment. This paper shows the relative power requirement, as a function of temperature, of a magnet with a particular shape and with a field strength of 100,000 gauss. Data is shown for three electrical conductors: copper, aluminum, and sodium.
