TITANIUM PUMP LOOP FOR AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS AT HIGH TEMPERATURES (open access)

TITANIUM PUMP LOOP FOR AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS AT HIGH TEMPERATURES

A titanium pump loop, designed to circulate aqueous solutions at temperatures and pressures up to 370 deg C and 3000 psia, was constructed. It is to be used to study the chemical stability of uranyl sulfate fuel solutions of interest to the Fluid Fuels Reactor Program. The total loop voluime was minimized so that about 2 liters uf solution was sufficient for loop operation. The equipment includes a sampling system to remove solution samples from the loop while operating at elevated temperature and pressure; a hydroclone to separate and remove any solids and/or heavyphase material formed; and provisions for installation of corrosion test specimens in the main loop stream. All equipment performed satisfactorily at design conditions in tests with water. (auth)

MEASUREMENT OF THE VAPOR PRESSURE OF TBP (open access)

MEASUREMENT OF THE VAPOR PRESSURE OF TBP

Two methods, the transpiration and direct P/sup 32/ counting methods, were tested for use in measuring the vapor pressure of TBP. With the transpiration technique, measured TBP vapor pressures were sufficiently reproducible, and probably of sufficient accuracy, to warrant improvement of the apparatus and its use in measuring the vapor pressure of TBP over various TBP- diluent-HNO/sub 3/-H//sub 2/O-UO/sub 2/ (NO/sub 3/)sub 2 solutions. With this method the vapor pressure of TBP containing 0.2 wt% H/sub 2/O was determined to be ~0.8 mu while that of TBP saturated with H/sub 2/O, ~6.5 wt% H/sub 2/O, was ~ 0.5l mu . The direct P/sup 32/counting technique was abandoned because of experimental difficulties. (auth)

Production test IP-377-A, Irradiation of N-Reactor inner fuel tubes in the KER Loops

The objective of the production test detailed in this report is to evaluate the behavior of N-Reactor inner fuel tubes during irradiation in the KER Loops at conditions equivalent to those expected in the N-Reactor. Natural and .947% enriched Zircaloy-2 jacketed N-Reactor inner fuel tubes (NIN-1) and (NIE-1) will be irradiated in the KER Loops to exposures no greater than 3500 MWD/T. The elements have brazed end closures and Zircaloy-2 supports and are contained in Zr-2 flow distributing sleeves.

High Voltage Electron Beam Welding of W-RE Thermocouples (open access)

High Voltage Electron Beam Welding of W-RE Thermocouples

A series of W-5 Re/W-26 Re thermocouples have been electron beam welded at the Hamilton Standard Division at our request. This technical report is a summary of our evaluation of these joints. These weldments did exhibit incomplete fusion in cap welds and some porosity in undesirable lead junction shapes. In fairness, this was a single attempt to make a difficult joint, and the objective of ungrounded 1/16 OD clad joints was met. As noted by Hamilton, two changes are necessary to improve this joint design: (1) swaging to forming the clad end rather than crimping prior to cap welding. (2) using a fixture with rotary motion on a tilting axis.

Solvent Extraction Recovery and Purification of Strontium-90 (open access)

Solvent Extraction Recovery and Purification of Strontium-90

A solvent extraction process was developed to produce high-purity Sr/sup 90/ from an irradiated U reprocessing waste solutlon. The extractant is D2EHPA diluted with TBP and Shell Spray Base. The process uses an acetic acid-acetate huffered aqueous phsse which is countercurrently contracted with the D2EHPA organic phase. Calcium and some Ce/sup 144/ extract with the Sr/sup 90/; extraction of other contaminants (Zr/sup 95/, Nb/sup 95/, Ru/sup 106/, and inert lead and iron) is prevented by adding either DTPA or EDTA to the feed solution. Decontamination from Ca and Ce/sup 144/ is provided by back extraction of the Sr/ sup 90/ into an aqueous 1M citric acid solution. The process was used to isolate and purify about one megacurie of Sr/sup 90/ for subsequent use in the fabrication of thermoelectric power generators as part of the Systems for Nuclear Auxiliary Power (SNAP) program. A Precision Flying Spot Film Digitizer

A digitizer and data handling system that measures the locations of images on transparent film by automatically scanning an area with a mechanically generated flying spot of light is described. The location measurements are directiy transmitted for processing to a digital computer, which also controls the digitizer operations. A 4 in. x 5 in. negative can be scanned by a roster with a pitch of 50 mu in about 3 min. (D.C.W.)

SYNTHESIS AND FABRICATION OF REFRACTORY URANIUM COMPOUNDS. Monthly Progress Report No. 11, November 1-November 30, 1960

Batches of UC were synthesized for use in fabrication of specimens for physical property determinations. This synthesis was carried out with mixed loose powders in a graphite crucible. Two and one-half pound batches of UN were synthesized using a stainless steel boat and an Inconel muffle furnace. Three batches of U/sub 3/Si/sub 2/ were synthesized with particular emphasis on controlling the rate of the reaction by limiting the maximum temperature to 1500 deg C. In addition, determinations were made of modulus of rupture, shear modulus, and Poisson's ratio of sintered UC, UN, and U/sub 3/Si/sub 2/ specimens. (M.C.G.)
