Relative Yields of Nitrogen-17 Produced by 190-Mev Deuteron Bombardment

"Yields of N¹⁷ relative to that produced in LiF have been measured in the 190-Mev deflected deuteron and the 380-Mev alpha beams of the 184-inch synchrocyclotron. The measurements have been performed in all the light elements from 0 through V, with the exception of Sc and the noble gases. In addition, yields were measured in the separated isotopes of Mg...Comparisons are made with other types of yield studies performed with neutrons and protons, and the areas of agreement are noted."

Fast Neutron Effects on Du Pont 1290 Film (open access)

Fast Neutron Effects on Du Pont 1290 Film

Abstract: "Fast neutron effects on a widely used x-ray film have been investigated. The neutron flux was provided by the (d, t) reaction of a Cockcroft-Walton accelerator. Integrated exposures to 10-10 n/cm-2 were given the film. It was found that perturbations on film that were pre-exposed to Co-60 gamma rays from 10 to 2000 r were negligible. Simultaneous exposure of neutrons plus gammas also indicated negligible effect on the film insofar as the gamma dose was concerned."

Stability for inhomogeneous difference schemes

Abstract. The Equivalence Theorem of P. Lax is extended to difference schemes for initial-value problems for linear inhomogeneous PDE with linear inhomogeneous boundary values and for boundary-value problems.

Summary of the Research Progress Meeting of September 1, 1949

The absolute excitation functions for the production of fission by charged particle bombardment in several substances were investigated at both high and low energies. The low energy work was done at the 60-inch Crocker cyclotron with alpha particles and deuterons, while the high energy work was done at the 184-inch cyclotron with alpha particles, deuterons, and protons.

Energy Response And Physical Properties Of NTA* Personnel Neutron Dosimeter Nuclear Track Film

This paper reports the chemical and physical properties of the NTA film packet. It correlates with these properties the response of this packet to neutrons of various energies. In this correlation the concept of the track unit is introduced as a basic unit for reporting film-packet response.

Effect of Choice of Electrical Conductor on Power Requirements of Low Temperature Magnets (open access)

Effect of Choice of Electrical Conductor on Power Requirements of Low Temperature Magnets

Introduction. As has been shown by Post, the total power required to produce a strong, steady-state magnetic field is strongly dependent upon the temperature at which the electrical conductor of the magnet operates. The power required for operation at very low temperature can, in some cases, be much less than that required for ambient temperature operation. The power required for low temperature operation depends on many system characteristics which include the metal chosen for the electrical conductor, the purity of this metal, and efficiency of the refrigeration equipment. This paper shows the relative power requirement, as a function of temperature, of a magnet with a particular shape and with a field strength of 100,000 gauss. Data is shown for three electrical conductors: copper, aluminum, and sodium.

Behavior, a Balanced Network of Chemical Transformations (Biokinetics)

Abstract. While the concept of a biological system as a balanced network of chemical transformations is not a new one, experimental definition of specific systems has been lacking. This paper defines theoretically and experimentally a number of such networks and their behavior and response to some limited environmental changes.

Chemistry Division Quarterly Report: December, 1952, January, February, 1953 - The Solubility of Hydrogen and Deuterium in Various Solvents

In the past year, exploratory data have been taken to determine the relative solubilities of hydrogen and deuterium in various solvents in the vicinity of room temperature and atmospheric pressure. This investigation is one phase of a program to determine the feasibility of separating deuterium from hydrogen by means of rectified absorption.
