Homogeneous Molten Salt Reactors (open access)

Homogeneous Molten Salt Reactors

Multigroup one-dimensional calculations were done recently to obtain estimates of critical masses, power density distributions and fissioning spectra for some homogeneous molten salt reactors having outer reflectors and central "islands," placed inside the currently proposed MSRE vessel. For a 5-inch-thick outer reflector and 1-ft-diamter island, both beryllium, the calculated critical mass is 108 kg; 40 percent of the fissions occur at thermal, and the maximum power density of 3.9 times the core mean power density occurs at the island-salt interface. If the reflector thickness is increased to 10 inches, the critical mass is reduced to 34 kg; 67 percent of the fissions occur at thermal, and the peak power density of twice the core mean again occurs at the core island-salt interface.

Reactivity Temperature Coefficient of High Exposure Fuel (open access)

Reactivity Temperature Coefficient of High Exposure Fuel

The presence of large amounts of plutonium in high exposure uranium will give rise to a large, positive, graphite reactivity, temperature coefficient. This will create control problems in normal operation and also in the event of loss of cooling. Some general suggestions are given for the solution of these problems. The magnitude of the coefficient is probably known within ± 25% at present and a program is planned to reduce this uncertainty. The uncertainty is of minor importance in the operating control problem but of considerable significance in the disaster control problem.

High Voltage Electron Beam Welding of W-RE Thermocouples (open access)

High Voltage Electron Beam Welding of W-RE Thermocouples

A series of W-5 Re/W-26 Re thermocouples have been electron beam welded at the Hamilton Standard Division at our request. This technical report is a summary of our evaluation of these joints. These weldments did exhibit incomplete fusion in cap welds and some porosity in undesirable lead junction shapes. In fairness, this was a single attempt to make a difficult joint, and the objective of ungrounded 1/16 OD clad joints was met. As noted by Hamilton, two changes are necessary to improve this joint design: (1) swaging to forming the clad end rather than crimping prior to cap welding. (2) using a fixture with rotary motion on a tilting axis.

Chemical Properties of Sodium Triethylhydroborate and Sodium Triisopropoxyhydroborate

Technical report abstract: Sodium hydride and triethylborane react to form sodium triethylhydroborate, NaBH(C2H5)3. This compound, a liquid at rooom temperature, was found to be soluble in hexane and mineral oil. A study was made of the thermal decomposition of sodium triethylhydroborate and its behavior toward boron trifluoride, boron trichloride, methyl borate, carbon dioxide, silane, and ethylene. Sodium triisopropoxyhydroborate, NaBH(OC3H7)3, was prepared and also found to be soluble in hexane and mineral oil. The reactions of this compound with methyl borate, triethylborane, silicon tetrachloride, and boron trichloride were investigated.

The Weighting of Intensities (open access)

The Weighting of Intensities

Technical report. From report : "The method of least squares refinement is based on the prediction of the theory of errors that, if the errors of the observed structure factors follow the Gaussian distribution, the most nearly correct atomic parameters will be those which result in the minimization of the residual R = Σi [√wi(|Fo| - |Fc|)i]2."

The Crystal Structure of Bis(Meta-Chlorobenzoyl) Methane (open access)

The Crystal Structure of Bis(Meta-Chlorobenzoyl) Methane

Technical report. From Abstract : "The crystal structure of bis(meta-chlorobenzoyl) methane has been determined by three dimensional anisotropic least squares refinement of scintillation counter data. The molecule was found to be nearly planar with a maximum deviation from the least squares molecular plane of 0.068Å and an average deviation of 0.023Å. Fourier transform techniques to locate phenyl rings provided the key to the structure determination. The intramolecular bond distances and thermal parameters of the oxygen atoms support a resonant, enol ring with a symmetric, intramolecular hydrogen bond. The structure confirms conslusions from the structure of bis(meta-bromobenzoyl) methane where the symmetry of the molecule was forced by the crystal symmetry."

The Hydrolysis of Tributyl Phosphate Ad Its Effect on the Purex Process

From abstract: "The rate of hydrolysis of TBP and the effect of the hydrolysis products in the Purex Process have been studied. Hydrolytic conditions may be encountered in the process which would lead to formation of dibutyl phosphoric acid, causing significant losses of tetravalent plutonium in stripping. This situation may be easily alleviated by reducing and stripping the plutonium in the trivalent state."

Thermal conductivity of halite using a pulsed laser (open access)

Thermal conductivity of halite using a pulsed laser

A feasibility study of the experimental determination of thermal conductivities of salts (NaCl) and a steel casing material using a pulsed laser technique are presented. Optically transparent materials such as salt were effectively coated with an opaque layer of aluminum or silver to satisfy test boundary conditions. Thermal conductivities for the three specimens were obtained from the thermal diffusivity, heat capacity and density relationship. Based on measurements from room temperature to 923/sup 0/K, single crystal halite yielded values ranging from 6.5 to 1.5 W/m-K versus 5.5 to 1.2 W/m-K for Avery Island Bed Salt. AISI 106-Grade B steel gave values of 46 to 29 W/m-K. While these measurements may be no better than +- 10 percent, it is possible with appropriate equipment and technique to generate data of engineering quality, +- 5 percent error, provided adequate test specimens can be fabricated. Attributes of this technique include the generation of data very quickly which is more applicable to testing large numbers of specimens relative to steady-state methods. The use of penny-sized specimens can be a problem from the fabrication requirement, especially for friable and anisotropic geological materials. The quality of the data rests on the adherence of the experimental design to …
