Test problems in radiative transfer calculations

Several test problems are presented for evaluating the radiation diffusion equations. For spatial transport schemes, 1-D problems with known analytic solutions are tested on 2-D domains with non-orthogonal meshes. It is shown that a scheme based on the Finite Element Method is insensitive to grid distortions when the diffusion term is dominant. Other test problems deal with Compton scattering, specifically the 1-D Fokker-Planck equation coupled to an equation describing the change in electron temperature. The test problems model the evolution of a Planckian radiation field as it equilibrates with the electrons. In all cases, the numerical results are compared with the analytic ones. 15 refs., 9 figs., 7 tabs.

Photoinitiated electron transfer in multichromophoric species: Synthetic tetrads and pentads

This research project involves the design, synthesis and study of molecules which mimic many of the important aspects of photosynthetic electron and energy transfer. Specifically, the molecules are designed to mimic the following aspects of natural photosynthetic multistep electron transfer: electron donation from a tetrapyrrole excited singlet state, electron transfer between tetrapyrroles, electron transfer from tetrapyrroles to quinones, and electron transfer between quinones with different redox properties. In addition, they model carotenoid antenna function in photosynthesis (singlet-singlet energy transfer from carotenoid polyenes to chlorophyll) and carotenoid photoprotection from singlet oxygen damage (triplet-triplet energy transfer from chlorophyll to carotenoids).

Technical evaluation report of the Fort St. Vrain final draft upgraded technical specifications

This report is a technical evaluation of the final draft of the Fort St. Vrain (FSV) Upgraded Technical Specifications (UT/S) as issued by Public Service of Colorado (PSC) on May 27, 1988 with subsequent supplemental updates issued on June 15, 1988 and August 5, 1988. It has been compared for consistency, and safety conservatism with the Fort St. Vrain (FSV) Updated Final Safety Analysis Report (FSAR), the FSV Safety Evaluation Report (SER), the Facility Operating License, DPR-34, and all amendments to the Facility Operating License issued as of June 1, 1988, and Appendix A to the Operating License DPR-34, Technical Specifications. Because of the age of the plant, no supplements to the Fort St. Vrain SER have been issued since the original SER was not issued as a WASH or a NUREG report. This made it necessary to review all amendments to the Facility Operating License since they would contain the safety evaluations done to support changes to the Facility Operating License. The upgraded Fort St. Vrain Technical Specifications were also broadly compared with the latest Westinghouse Standard Technical Specifications (WSTS) to assure that what was proposed for Fort St. Vrain was consistent with the latest NRC staff practices for …

Interactive pre- and post-processing tools for finite-difference time-domain codes

Practical three-dimensional electromagnetic modeling has traditionally been hampered by insufficient computing power. Recent advances in computer hardware are beginning to remove this difficulty, and one can expect that this trend will continue for the foreseeable future. To exploit this increased computer power and to solve more realistic problems, researchers have developed numerous algorithms appropriate for 3-D calculations and have built large general-purpose computer codes around them. In spite of this technical and theoretical progress, two practical difficulties remain: providing the computer code with an accurate description of a particular problem and viewing the end results of the calculation. Researchers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory have been developing and using a new finite-difference, time-domain (FDTD) code over the last few years. This code, TSAR, is currently being used on a wide range of electromagnetic scattering, coupling, and propagation problems. Some of the geometries of interest are large and quite detailed, requiring meshes with more than a million cells. To efficiently deal with these large problems, we have developed a set of pre and post-processing tools to be used in conjunction with the TSAR FDTD code. Nondestructive x-ray microanalysis bidirectional scanning and data acquisition system

A system for making fast scans of specimens and acquiring data was developed at the oak Ridge Y-12 Plant. An LSI 11/23 computer using the RT11 operating system controls the scan and data acquisition. Scan software was written which would program a Unidex III stepping motor controller to make the scan motions while the position was monitored and the data acquired through the computer`s timer/counter boards from the multichannel analyzer`s four region of interest (ROI) outputs. Small areas of a part or specimen are scanned by moving the part back and forth in the x-ray beam using stepping motor actuated tables. A detector receives the scattered x-rays from the part and sends a signal to the multichannel analyzer which digitizes it. After the data has been acquired using the scan computer, the data is then transferred to a PC to where it is processed and an image is generated and displayed for analysis.

Linear beam-beam tune shift calculations for the Tevatron Collider

A realistic estimate of the linear beam-beam tune shift is necessary for the selection of an optimum working point in the tune diagram. Estimates of the beam-beam tune shift using the ''Round Beam Approximation'' (RBA) have over estimated the tune shift for the Tevatron. For a hadron machine with unequal lattice functions and beam sizes, an explicit calculation using the beam size at the crossings is required. Calculations for various Tevatron lattices used in Collider operation are presented. Comparisons between the RBA and the explicit calculation, for elliptical beams, are presented. This paper discusses the calculation of the linear tune shift using the program SYNCH. Selection of a working point is discussed. The magnitude of the tune shift is influenced by the choice of crossing points in the lattice as determined by the pbar ''cogging effects''. Also discussed is current cogging procedures and presents results of calculations for tune shifts at various crossing points in the lattice. Finally, a comparison of early pbar tune measurements with the present linear tune shift calculations is presented. 17 refs., 13 figs., 3 tabs.

Negative transverse impedance

Recently, measurements in the SPS show that the coherent tune shift in the horizontal direction has positive values whereas that in the vertical direction has negative ones. Thus the existence of negative transverse impedance gets confirmed in a real machine. This stimulates us to start a new round of systematic studies on this interesting phenomenon. The results obtained from our computer simulations are presented in this note. Our simulations demonstrate that the negative transverse impedance may appear when the rotational symmetry embedded in a discontinuity is broken, and that the geometries that we have studies may be the source of the positive horizontal tune shift measured in the SPS.
