Schemes for anti pp interactions at ISABELLE

Various schemes for obtaining anti pp interactions are outlined, and the luminosities obtainable for each case calculated. In the simplest realistic case, a luminosity of 1.3 x 10/sup 29/ is obtained with a 13 hour filling time. The addition of special rf systems in both the AGS and ISABELLE give a scheme with luminosity 8 x 10/sup 29/ in 6 hours. The use of stochastic cooling to stack raises the luminosity to as high as 10/sup 31/ but the filling time is then 68 hours. Finally a scheme is considered that uses a special 30 GeV capture ring. With this, a luminosity of 10/sup 31/ could be achieved after 20 hours, or higher if a larger filling time were acceptable. Further gains could be made if a smaller proton spot on the target is used but a simple calculation suggests that even the spot size assumed may explode the target too fast.

Computer program SCAP-BR for gamma-ray streaming through multi-legged ducts

A computer program, SCAP-BR, has been developed at Burns and Roe for the gamma-ray streaming analysis through multi-legged ducts. SCAP-BR is a modified version of the single scattering code, SCAP, incorporating capabilities of handling multiple scattering and volumetric source geometries. It utilizes the point kernel integration method to calculate both the line-of-sight and scattered gamma dose rates by employing the ray tracing technique through complex shield geometries. The multiple scattering is handled by a repeated process of the single scatter method through each successive scatter region and collapsed pseudo source meshes constructed on the relative coordinate systems. The SCAP-BR results have been compared with experimental data for a Z-type (three-legged) concrete duct with a Co-60 source placed at the duct entrance point. The SCAP-BR dose rate predictions along the duct axis demonstrate an excellent agreement with the measured values.

Results of a preliminary design study for a solar-powered irrigation facility to be located on a farm between Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona, are presented. The ERDA-specified generic design criteria are detailed. A detailed systems analysis is presented, and preliminary designs of the thermal storage system, organic Rankine cycle power system, cooling water system, power distribution system, and collector foundation are given. The purpose of these tests was to determine which orifice elements achieved satisfactory hydraulic and thermal performance prior to their incorporation into the Jet Condenser Assembly. Requirements were as set forth within the Kilowatt Isotope Power System (KIPS) Component Test Procedure number 414 for the Jet Condenser Orifice Performance testing. The results of the performance testing conducted on the Jet Condenser Orifices are presented. Part Number 720841 Jet Condenser Orifice Nozzle successfully completed the orifice screening tests.

Data from air tests conducted on the 1/5-Scale Model Mark I Pressure Suppression Facility at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory were analyzed for the purpose of determining the various sources of load signature characteristics. It was determined that hydrodynamic vertical loading function embodies effects from: (a) momentum flux associated with flow from the downcomers; (b) momentum rate associated with bulk pool motion; and (c) unbalanced internal pressure forces related to phenomena associated with vent clearing. The integral form of the linear momentum equation is used to derive qualitative and quantitative insight into the mechanics of the hydrodynamic loading function. Amplitude spectra derived from Fourier transformations show that the 25 Hz (approximate) structural mode is the only frequency which appears consistently in all wave forms which were spectrum analyzed.

The 236-Z canyon contains equipment for repurification of plutonium and recovery of plutonium from scrap material. To meet production requirements of Fast Flux Test Facility/Clinch River Breeder Reactor oxide with the existing plant, several new pieces of equipment will be needed in the future. More storage space and a better accountability system are needed to support this increased production. The available canyon space needs to be utilized to its fullest in order to accommodate the new equipment. The purpose of this document is to identify the new pieces of equipment, show how they fit into the flowsheet, and locate them in the canyon.

The current status of liquid-metal fast breeder reactor (LMFBR) development and one of the principal safety issues, a hypothetical core-disruptive accident (HCDA), are discussed. Bibliographic information on worldwide LMFBRs relative to the development and safety of the breeder reactor is presented for the period 1975 through 1976. The bibliography consists of approximately 1618 abstracts covering early research and development and operating experiences leading up to the present design practices that are necessary for the licensing of breeder reactors. Soft-sphere model for liquid metals

A semi-empirical soft-sphere model of fluids is modified for application to the thermodynamic properties of liquid metals. Enthalpy, volume, and sound speed are computed as functions of temperature for 13 metals and compared with experimental data. Critical points and coexistence curves are also computed and compared with experimental data, where these have been measured. Strengths and weaknesses of the model are discussed.

Growth of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) and Tilapia zillii in the Reft River Geothermal Area (RRGT) geothermal waters can equal or surpass that in a commercial aquaculture facility. Fish and prawn mortality over the course of the intermediate term preliminary study did not appear to be related to any inherent geothermal water chemistry conditions. Temperature control was a problem but does not appear to be beyond design control. The absence of temperature-related mortality in channel catfish, Tilapia zilli, and yellow perch (Perca flavescens) indicates increased survival and suggests reduced expenditures for disease control. It may also allow higher fish densities in commercial aquaculture operations using geothermal water. Results of this study indicate potential for commercial aquaculture development at the Raft River Geothermal Testing Site.

The major effort was concentrated on plant operating modes. The 50 MWe (Net) base case plant conceptual design, developed during the initial effort of this project, was modified to reflect substantially improved turbine-generator efficiencies. A capital cost estimate was prepared for the new base case using the fourth-quarter 1976 price level. Curves showing the geothermal fluid temperature decline with time, for all cases under study, were calculated by Chevron with their reservoir computer model, using input data provided by Bechtel. With this data, curves of required brine flow rate versus time were prepared for the 50,100 and 200 MWe plants that employ the constant power output operating mode. These flow rate curves form the bases for conceptual designs and corresponding capital cost estimates which are the next work items. The capital cost estimates for the Niland multistage-flash/binary plants with and without regeneration were escalated from fourth-quarter 1975 to fourth-quarter 1976.

Elevated-temperature benchmark tests of simply supported beams and circular plates subjected to time-varying loadings

This report presents the measured elastic-plastic-creep responses of eight simply supported type 304 stainless steel beams and circular plates that were subjected to time-varying loadings at elevated temperature. The tests were performed to provide experimental benchmark problem data suitable for assessing inelastic analysis methods and for validating computer programs. Beams and plates exhibit the essential features of inelastic structural behavior; yet they are relatively simple and the experimental results are generally easy to interpret. The stress fields are largely uniaxial in beams, while multiaxial effects are introduced in plates. The specimens tested were laterally loaded at the center and subjected to either a prescribed load or a center deflection history. The specimens were machined from a common well-characterized heat of material, and all the tests were performed at a temperature of 593/sup 0/C (1100/sup 0/F). Test results are presented in terms of the load and center deflection behaviors, which typify the overall structural behavior. Additional deflection data, as well as strain gage results and mechanical properties data for the beam and plate material, are provided in the appendices.

Correlation of Substructure With Mechanical Properties of Plastically Deformed Reactor Structural Materials. Progress Report, January 1, 1976--June 30, 1977

Transmission electron microscopy used to evaluate the deformation (creep, fatigue and tensile) induced microstructure of 304 SS, Incoloy 800, 330 SS and three of the experimental alloys (E19, E23 and E36) obtained from the National Alloy Program clearly shows that the relationship between the subgrain size (lambda) and the applied stress (sigma) obeys the equation lambda = Ab (sigma/E)/sup -1/ where A is a constant of the order of 4, b the Burgers rector and E is Young's modulus. Hot-hardness studies on 304 SS, 316 SS, Incoloy 800, 2 /sup 1///sub 4/ Cr-1 Mo steels, 330 SS, Inconel 718, PE-16, Inconel 706, M-813 and the above three experimental alloys suggests that reasonable effective activation energies for creep may be obtained through the use of the hardness test as a strength microprobe tool. The ordering of the strength levels obtained through hot-hardness follows quite closely that obtained in tensile tests when those data are available.

Evaluation of metal-foil strain gages for cryogenic application in magnetic fields

The requirement for the design and construction of large superconducting magnet systems for fusion research has raised a number of new questions regarding the properties of composite superconducting conductors. One of these, the effect of mechanical stress on the current-carrying capacity of Nb/sub 3/Sn, is of major importance in determining the feasibility of constructing large magnets with this material. A typical experiment for determining such data involves the measurement of critical current versus magnetic field while the conductor is being mechanically strained to various degrees. Techniques are well developed for the current and field measurements, but much less so for the accurate measurement of strain at liquid-helium temperature in a high magnetic field. A study was made of commercial, metal-foil strain gages for use under these conditions. The information developed can also be applied to the use of strain gages as diagnostic tools in superconducting magnets.
