Studies of the Metabolism of Certain Fission Products and Plutonium (open access)

Studies of the Metabolism of Certain Fission Products and Plutonium

A short survey of some of the metabolic relationships of the elements, cerium, colurbium, plutonium, strontium, yttrium, and zirconium is presented. While the results of internally deposited radium have not been investigated in these experiments, they have been extensively studies by others. Because so much is known of its biological effects, it has been included in this historical survey.

The effect of pile gas on tube block temperatures in {open_quotes}G{close_quotes} pile (open access)

The effect of pile gas on tube block temperatures in {open_quotes}G{close_quotes} pile

Helium, carbon dioxide, and helium-carbon dioxide mixtures are being considered for use as the pile gas in `G` pile. Coring the graphite tube block to provide a gas gap between the process tube centered in the graphite and the graphite tube block has been suggested as a means of maintaining high graphite temperatures in the tube blocks. It has been established that graphite damage during irradiation in minimized at high temperatures.

Preliminary studies of a continuous process for the thermal decomposition of uranyl nitrate hexahydrate (open access)

Preliminary studies of a continuous process for the thermal decomposition of uranyl nitrate hexahydrate

At the request of the A.E.C., experiments were conducted on the continuous addition of liquid UNH to a bed of powdered UO{sub 3} in a gas heated pot in the Pot Room of Plant 6 to gather thermal data regarding the continuous decomposition of UNH and to make observations of the physical behavior of such a system. The thermal data indicate that the size and the energy requirements of the equipment required per pound of UO{sub 3} produced would be considerably smaller than for the present batch-wise process. The products of the reactions through all the successive stages were more dense than the products of the present process. The metal yields in the reduction stage were 98.5%, 97.6% and 97.8%. The yield of 98.5% in the one reactor indicates that this process will produce UF{sub 4} capable of producing as high yields as any yet made. The lower yields in the other two cases fall within the present control limits for yield. The determination of the physical and chemical properties has not yet been completed and will be reported shortly in a subsequent paper.

Summary of the Aerodynamic Characteristics and Flying Qualities Obtained from Flights of Rocket-Propelled Models of an Airplane Configuration Incorporating a Sweptback Inversely Tapered Wing at Transonic and Low-Supersonic Speeds (open access)

Summary of the Aerodynamic Characteristics and Flying Qualities Obtained from Flights of Rocket-Propelled Models of an Airplane Configuration Incorporating a Sweptback Inversely Tapered Wing at Transonic and Low-Supersonic Speeds

From Summary: "Flight tests have been conducted on rocket-propelled models of an airplane configuration incorporating a sweptback wing with inverse taper to investigate the drag, stability, and control characteristics at transonic and supersonic speeds. The models were tested with a conventional tail arrangement in the Mach number range from 0.55 to 1.2. In addition to the various aerodynamic parameters obtained, the flying qualities were computed for a full-scale airplane with the center-of-gravity location at 18 percent of the mean aerodynamic chord. Also, included in this investigation are drag measurements made on relatively simple fixed-control models tested with both conventional and V-tail arrangements."

Effect of compressor-outlet bleedoff on turbojet-engine performance (open access)

Effect of compressor-outlet bleedoff on turbojet-engine performance

An investigation was conducted in the NACA Lewis altitude wind tunnel to determine the effect of compressor-outlet bleedoff on the performance of an axial-flow turbojet engine equipped with a variable-area exhaust nozzle. Results presented indicate the effect of compressor-outlet bleedoff on performance at altitudes of 25,000 and 40,000 feet and a flight Mach number of 0.53. Variation of performance with bleedoff flow is indicated for operation with fixed- and variable-area exhaust nozzles. Temperature and pressure losses through the bleedoff ducting system are also discussed.
