Equilibrium Extraction Characteristics of Alkyl Amines and Nuclear Fuels Metals in Nitrate Systems. Progress Report No. V for the Period July 1 - September 30, 1959 (open access)

Equilibrium Extraction Characteristics of Alkyl Amines and Nuclear Fuels Metals in Nitrate Systems. Progress Report No. V for the Period July 1 - September 30, 1959

Extraction of HNO3 by triaryl amine was studied by equilibrating equal volumes of aqueous and organic phases at 25C. At HNO3 concentrations of 2 to 10 N the acid in the organic phase in excess of that equivalent in the amine concentration was proportional to the concentration of HNO3 in the equilibrated aqueous phase. other workers report similar results with nitric acid and tri-n-octyl amine in benzene. Zirconium extractions carried out at 10g Zr/1 with 0.35 M TLA nitrate in toluene showed a fourth power dependence of EZR on HNO (aq) over the range 2 to 10N. Maximum distribution ratios calculated from samarium scouting experiments using amines in kerosene were about 5 x 10(-3) for Primene JMT, 10(-4) for TLA, 10(-5) for S-24, and less than zero for DTDA. Distribution rations in the extractions ranged from ERu = 0.12 for 0.35M TLA shaken with an initially new 2N HNO3 solution for 15 minutes. Data on Zr and Ru standardization in TLA solution for spectrophotometric analyses are included.

A Statistical Model of Nuclear Level Spacings (open access)

A Statistical Model of Nuclear Level Spacings

A generalization of Wigner's simple model for the distribution of nuclear level spacings is studied. It is based on a stochastic process which reproduces the correct joing probability distribution of N enerfy levels for small spacings. The case N=3, which includes the effect of the correlation between adjacent spacings, is discussed in detail. The resulting distribution and the correlation coefficient are compared with experimental data. No definite conclusion can be drawn except to say that the effect of the correlations on the spacing distributions on the spacing distribution is very small.

Non-Linear Bunch Motion at Transition (open access)

Non-Linear Bunch Motion at Transition

A summary of the dynamic behavior of the proton bunches in the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) has been given previously. In these reports, the usual linearization of the differential equations involved has been made and the theory was restricted to well bunched beams. The linearized approach is no longer valid at transition where the actual phase angle of the bunch can differ appreciably for a short time from the stable phase angle Φ₀. In this report the non-linearity of the differential equations for phase oscillations will no longer be neglected. At transition the beam is slow enough so that the electronics of the bootstrap system can be considered as being ideal and the radius servo loop can be characterized by one time constant. Under these assumptions the analysis can be carried out in a two-dimensional phase plane. The essential new result will be the short existence of a stable equilibrium point for the bunch motion not coinciding with Φ₀. The results here derived have been tested experimentally and at least a qualitative agreement was found. However, the conclusions are no more valid if debunching takes place since we have still neglected the finite bunch width.

Intrabeam scattering in the Tevatron collider upgrade (open access)

Intrabeam scattering in the Tevatron collider upgrade

This report explores the effects of intrabeam scattering on the integrated luminosity for some conditions under consideration for the early stages of the Tevatron collider upgrade. This report concludes that intrabeam scattering effects, although they are hoped to become clearly visible, are not expected to wash out gains made by lowering {beta}* and emittances. It is not the intent of this report to provide a physics tutorial on intrabeam scattering. However, a bibliography is provided at the end of this report which may be of use in that regard. 14 figs.

Radiation Effects on BCC Metals and Alloys. Progress Report, January 1, 1975--November 30, 1975. [V ion-irradiated Mo; neutron-irradiated Nb, Nb-1Zr, W, and W--25 Re] (open access)

Radiation Effects on BCC Metals and Alloys. Progress Report, January 1, 1975--November 30, 1975. [V ion-irradiated Mo; neutron-irradiated Nb, Nb-1Zr, W, and W--25 Re]

Experimental results of molybdenum specimens which were ion irradiated at several temperatures in the range of 700 to about 1500/sup 0/C at dpa levels of about 2 to 60 are discussed. TEM studies on Nb and Nb--1Zr irradiated at 1 x 10/sup 22/ n cm/sup -2/, E greater than 1 MeV at six temperatures in the range 430 to 1050/sup 0/C are presented. In addition, resistivity studies on W and W--25Re specimens irradiated under similar conditions as the Nb and Nb--1Zr specimens show significant changes coupled with void swelling in W but not in the W--25Re alloy. However, the W--25Re alloy showed that large precipitates have been formed thereby precluding the formation of voids. Finally, it has been shown that a hot-hardness tester may be effectively used as a strength microprobe in advanced alloy development and of irradiated metal and alloys where only small quantities of material are normally available. Harmonics suppression of vacuum chamber eddy current induced fields with application to the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) Low Energy Booster (LEB) Magnets

This memo presents the formulation of an expression for eddy currents induced in a thin-walled conductor due to a time-dependent electromagnet field excitation. Then follows an analytical development for prediction of vacuum chamber eddy current induced field harmonics in iron-core electromagnets. A passive technique for harmonics suppression is presented with specific application to the design of the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) Low Energy B (LEB) Magnets.

Wisconsin Inventors' Network Database final report (open access)

Wisconsin Inventors' Network Database final report

The Wisconsin Innovation Service Center at UW-Whitewater received a DOE grant to create an Inventor's Network Database to assist independent inventors and entrepreneurs with new product development. Since 1980, the Wisconsin Innovation Service Center (WISC) at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater has assisted independent and small business inventors in estimating the marketability of their new product ideas and inventions. The purpose of the WISC as an economic development entity is to encourage inventors who appear to have commercially viable inventions, based on preliminary market research, to invest in the next stages of development, perhaps investigating prototype development, legal protection, or more in-depth market research. To address inventor's information needs, WISC developed on electronic database with search capabilities by geographic region and by product category/industry. It targets both public and private resources capable of, and interested in, working with individual and small business inventors. At present, the project includes resources in Wisconsin only.
