The Fabrication of Stainless Steel-Uranium Dioxide Fuel Elements (open access)

The Fabrication of Stainless Steel-Uranium Dioxide Fuel Elements

Abstract: "Stainless steel-clad fuel sheet 0.020 in. thick with a 0.008-in. core of stainless steel plus UO2 was produced by roll cladding a powder metal compact. The effects of processing variables, core-matrix composition, quantity of oxide, and oxide particle size on the properties of the sheet were investigated. The strength and ductility of the core decreased sharply as the quantity of oxide in the core increased from 20 to 40 w/o. Over the range of matrix compositions investigated the particle size of the oxide had little affect on the core strength. In cores containing 21 w/o of oxide. 18 w/o chromium, 82 w/o iron matrix prepared from the elemental metal powders had the highest strength and ductility, but this matrix was susceptible to cracking during thermal cycling. As elemental 18 w/o chromium, 9 w/o nickel, 73 w/o iron matrix was the most satisfactory from the standpoint of fabrication and over-all characteristics of the resulting sheet."

An Exact Analysis of Limited Plane Plasma in a Magnetic Field (open access)

An Exact Analysis of Limited Plane Plasma in a Magnetic Field

Introduction: "Prior analyses of a plasma in a magnetic field have been limited, as far as the writer is aware, to cases in which the relative change in field over the orbital distance and the relative change in ion concentration are both small, or in which the relations have been viewed in a purely hydrodynamical way. The first approach excludes cases which can be of considerable interests, for it fails near a plasma edge. The second loses all sight of the structure imposed by the orbital motions."

A brief review of major problems at Redox (open access)

A brief review of major problems at Redox

During the last few months the Redox plant has been plagued with an excessive number of problems which have resulted in its inability to meet forecasted production schedules in November 1953, January and February 1954. The following paragraphs are intended to indicate some of the problems faced at Redox and the steps that are being taken to remedy them. It should be emphasized that the plant has been operating far above original design capacity and this fact tends to aggravate some of the problems. For example, although steps have been taken to increase the throughput capacity of certain of the head-end steps and some of the columns, it is most possible to install a second centrifuge, oxidizer or D-12 waste evaporator in parallel so that when any of these -- one of a kind -- pieces of equipment is out of service the entire plant is unable to operate.

An investigation at high subsonic speeds of the pressure distributions on a 45 degree sweptback vertical tail in sideslip with and without a 45 degree sweptback horizontal tail located on the fuselage center line

Report presenting an investigation in the high-speed tunnel at high subsonic speeds and several angles of attack of the chordwise pressure distribution at six spanwise stations on a 45 degree sweptback, untapered vertical tail in sideslip. The presence of the horizontal tail slightly increased the value of section normal-force coefficients on the vertical tail but did not materially alter the nature of the load distribution.
