Potential for efficient frequency conversion at high average power using solid state nonlinear optical materials (open access)

Potential for efficient frequency conversion at high average power using solid state nonlinear optical materials

High-average-power frequency conversion using solid state nonlinear materials is discussed. Recent laboratory experience and new developments in design concepts show that current technology, a few tens of watts, may be extended by several orders of magnitude. For example, using KD*P, efficient doubling (>70%) of Nd:YAG at average powers approaching 100 KW is possible; and for doubling to the blue or ultraviolet regions, the average power may approach 1 MW. Configurations using segmented apertures permit essentially unlimited scaling of average power. High average power is achieved by configuring the nonlinear material as a set of thin plates with a large ratio of surface area to volume and by cooling the exposed surfaces with a flowing gas. The design and material fabrication of such a harmonic generator are well within current technology.

Adult Fishway Inspections on the Columbia and Snake Rivers, 1984-1985 Annual Report. (open access)

Adult Fishway Inspections on the Columbia and Snake Rivers, 1984-1985 Annual Report.

Mainstream projects which have adult fish passage facilities are inspected by project operators, fishway attendants, and state and federal fishery agencies. The overall movement of upstream migrants in 1984 appeared to be satisfactory with few delays. Special efforts were made by fishery agencies and Corps personnel to check on potential problems which appeared to exist at The Dalles and John Day Dams this year. However, adult passage facilities were operating ''in criteria'' and fish may have been delayed by temperature or other factors. Inspections were generally made once a month. Some projects were operating at less than full criteria as seen during inspections by fishery agencies this year. It appears that during periods of low tailwater, certain projects have difficulty maintaining proper head at main fishway entrances. Some main entrance gates bottom-out and water depth over these weirs are not up to desired criteria. Also it was noted that auxiliary water pumps were not being run at a rate to achieve the desired amount of water for attracting fish to the fish ladders and maintaining proper head at main fishway entrances.

Cs-137 concentrations in Steel Creek in 1984. Revision 1 (open access)

Cs-137 concentrations in Steel Creek in 1984. Revision 1

Measurement of Cs-137 concentrations in Steel Creek, 1984, have shown that L Reactor flow tests have not changed the Cs-137 concentrations and the initial phases of L Pond dam construction have only caused a slight increase in Cs-137 concentrations. The Cs-137 concentrations in 1984 were about 1 to 2 percent of the EPA drinking water concentration guide of 200 pCi/L. The concentration in Steel Creek is essentially the same as in 1980, before any major L Reactor refurbishing. The data obtained in 1984 indicate that initial Cs-137 remobilization estimates for Steel Creek are still valid.

Ethiopian Food Situation: International Response (open access)

Ethiopian Food Situation: International Response

The United States has donated the largest share of the world-wide relief effort. Members of Congress nave passed legislation, the African Famine Relief and Recovery Act of 1985 (2.L. 99-8), authorizing emergency relief assistance to Ethiopia and other famine-stricken countries. Some observers favor trying to remove restrictions that prohibit long-term agricultural development assistance and other forms of economic aid to Ethiopia, but many continue to believe that aid to this Marxist-oriented nation should be limited to humanitarian relief. The Ethiopian food situation will probably remain a central issue among U.S. lawmakers and relief officials during the 99th Congress.
