Atmospheric Contamination Associated with Inert-Gas-Shielded, Consumable Electrode Welding

Apparent excessive concentrations of atmospheric contamination which were reported to be associated with an inert-gas-shielded consumable electrode arc wielding operation were studied to evaluate the potential health hazards. A study was made of the concentrations of metal fume and gaseous products of the operation as well as the spectrum of ultraviolet radiation. Recommendations for necessary controls were made.

The Theories of Turbulence

"The theory of turbulence reached its full growth at the end of the 19th century as a result of the work by Boussinesq and Reynolds. It then underwent a long period of stagnation which ended under the impulse given to it by the development of wind tunnels caused by the needs of aviation. Numerous researchers, attempted to put Reynolds' elementary statistical theory into a more precise form. During the war, some isolated scientists - von Weizsacker and Heisenberg in Germany, Kolmogoroff in Russia, Onsager in the U.S.A. - started a program of research. By a system of assumptions which make it possible to approach the structure of turbulence in well-defined limiting conditions quantitatively, they obtained a certain number of laws on the correlations and the spectrum. Since the late reports have improved the mathematical language of turbulence, it was deemed advisable to start with a detailed account of the mathematical methods applicable to turbulence, inspired at first by the work of the French school, above all for the basic principles, then the work of the foreigners, above all for the theory of the spectrum" (p. 1).

Report presenting a visualization study using smoke to see the secondary-flow phenomena in the rotor-blade tip region of a low-speed turbine. Measurements of the factors affecting the flow patterns were recorded from visual observations. Results regarding a general description of the smoke patterns, shroud boundary-layer considerations, transition rotor tip speed, and high-speed-turbine operating conditions are provided.

Preliminary investigation of effect on performance of dividing conical-spike nose inlets into halves at Mach numbers 1.5 to 2.0

Inserting a splitter plate in the subsonic diffuser caused a pressure-recovery loss of about 1 percent for an inlet with a long nearly constant-area throat section. The loss was due to the increased surface area. Another inlet, which had a comparatively rapid area increase immediately after the throat, experienced pressure-recovery losses of 5 and 6 percent at Mach numbers of 1.8 and 2.0, respectively, and about 1 percent at Mach 1.5.

The results indicated that alkylation and more especially silylation reduce the heat of combustion. Results regarding alkyl- and silyldecaboranes, diborylmethane, diborylethane, and their alkyl derivatives, bipentaboranyl and bideocaboranyl, dipentaboranyl- and didecaboranylalkanes, and heats of combustion of isomers are provided.

Carnotite Resources of San Miguel Bench, Montrose County, Colorado

Abstract: San Miguel bench includes about 4 square miles in the southern part of T. 48 N., R. 17 W., New Mexico principal meridian, Montrose County, Colorado. Production of carnotite ore from the area has been about 15, 000 short tons having an estimated average graderof 0. 31 percent U3O8,and 1. 6 percent V2 05 Nearly all of the carnotite deposits occur in a single-continuous sandstone bed near the top of the Salt Wash member of the Jurassic Morrison formation. These deposits consist chiefly of sandstone impregnated with uranium- and vanadium-bearing minerals. They are irregular tabular-shaped masses ranging in size from a few short tons to 30, 000 short tons or more of minable carnotite ore. During the period November 27, 1951, to April 17, 1953, the U. S. Geological Survey drilled 309 holes totaling 92, 194 feet on the San Miguel bench. Reserves total about 43, 000 short tons of material 1 foot or more thick and contain 0,.10 percent or more U30 or 1. 0 percent or more V205. Of these reserves 3, 300 short tons occur in private land. Regeneration of Silver Reactors (open access)

Regeneration of Silver Reactors

A study of the variables involved in regeneration was undertaken to determine means of improving the regeneration efficiency and increasing the useful life of a reactor. Information gained from regeneration studies on a 4-inch-diameter by 8-foot-high column indicates that the present regeneration procedure is optimum as to quantity, concentration, and rate of addition of regenerant solution. It appears feasible to restore a plugged reactor by washing off all the silver nitrate from the packing and recoating by a normal regeneration cycle. Such a procedure could be utilized only if there is sufficient dead space in the bottom of the reactor to hold the wash solution.

Occurrence of Technetium in Nature : Final Report for the Period November 1, 1954 to August 31, 1955

Twelve neutron activation analyses for naturally occurring technetium-98 were performed. Positive results were obtained in ten cases. Precautions were taken to avoid interference by molybdenum and technetium-99. the cross section for the reaction [formula] as found to be equal to 4 +- 2 mb for the neutron spectrum of the vertical thimbles of the Argonne CP-5 reactor. The chemical state of molybdenum (VI) in basic solution was studied by an anion-exchange technique. Evidence was obtained for the existence of polymeric species at pH-values up to 14. Preliminary work on the stability of Domax-1 anion exchange resin in perchlorate media indicates rapid deterioration even at 0.2F ClO4-.
