Electrodeposition research progress report
This report contains a review of this work conducted by the Electrodeposition Group for the last six months. Pictures and a discussion of the method used to convert production solutions to postum to hydrofluoride acid solutions of postum are given. Attempts to plate postum in an inert atmosphere by remote control have been made. As yet no successful runs have been completed. Standardization of normal calomel electrodes by comparison to silver-silver chloride electrodes and to hydrogen electrodes is described.

Preliminary Results of Natural Icing of an Axial-Flow Turbojet Engine
Memorandum presenting a flight investigation in natural icing conditions to determine the effect of ice formations on the performance of an axial-flow turbojet engine. Tail-pipe temperature increased from 761 to 1065 degrees Fahrenheit and the jet thrust decreased from 1234 to 910 pounds during a period of 45 minutes in icing. No general conclusions can be reached from the data because the icing condition was relatively light.

The Production of Leukopenia by Chronic Irradiation of the Abdominal Viscera of the Cat
This report describes an experiment that produced leukopenia in cats through irradiation. It elaborates that irradiated cats had significant decreases in levels of leukocytes, polymorphonuclear leukocytes, and lymphocytes. The methods and specific results of the experiment are also given and discussed.

Flight determination of wing and tail loads on a fighter-type airplane by means of strain-gage measurements
Report presenting a flight investigation to determine the contributions of wing, tail, and fuselage to the total airplane lift of a propeller-driven fighter-type airplane. The tests occurred over a range of Mach numbers. The loads on the various airplane components were measured by the use of calibrated strain-gage installations located at the roots of the wings and horizontal tail surfaces.

Flight Investigation to Determine the Aerodynamic Characteristics of Rocket-Powered Models Representative of a Fighter-Type Airplane Configuration Incorporating an Inverse-Taper Wing and a Vee Tail
From Summary: "Two rocket-powered models representative of a fighter-type airplane were investigated in flight at Mach numbers up to 1.01 and 1.07 by the Langley Pilotless Aircraft Research Division at its testing station at Wallops Island, Va. These models incorporated an inverse-taper wing and a vee tail and were flown with controls undeflected and wing and stabilizer set at 0 deg incidence. Values of lateral acceleration, normal acceleration velocity, and drag were obtained by use of telemeters and a Doppler velocimeter radar unit."

Flight Tests to Determine the Drag of Fin-Stabilized Parabolic Bodies at Transonic and Supersonic Speeds
Report presenting testing on parabolic bodies of revolution of two fineness ratios in the transonic and supersonic range. One had a body fineness ratio of 7.87 and one had a ratio of 12 and were tested under different Mach number ranges. Experimental results and drag estimates of various portions of the body are provided.

Review of stuck slugs
Records show that difficulty has been encountered with the discharge of two tubes in B Pile, twelve in the D Pile, and fifteen in the F Pile during the period from initial start-up until March 15, 1948. In sixteen cases the tubes have been replaced, six of the tubes which were in the fringe have been made air tubes, four did not warrant replacement, and three are to be replaced in the future. General statistics for these twenty-nine tubes are presented with additional details in this report.

N-17, A Delayed Neutron Emitter
The decay scheme of a 4.2 second neutron emitter has been investigated in detail. Chemical and physical evidence shows that it is N{sup 17}, which emits beta rays to a broad excited state of O{sup 17}, which then breaks up into a neutron plus O{sup 16}. The energy spectrum of the neutrons is determined by measuring the energies of the O{sup 16} recoils in a proportional counter. The neutrons have a most probable energy of 0.9 Mev, a 'half width' of less than .5 Mev, and an upper limit of about 2 Mev. {beta}-recoil coincidences are observed, as predicted by the Bohr-Wheeler theory, and the {beta}-ray energy is measured by absorption. The beta rays in coincidence with neutrons have an upper limit of 3.7 {+-} 0.2 Mev. Beta-rays directly to the ground stat of O{sup 17} are not observed because of high background effects, but should have an energy of 8.7 Mev. Some evidence is presented to show that energy is conserved in the {beta}-n transition through the broad excited state in O{sup 17}.

Application of one part of Von Karman's two-dimensional transonic similarity law to drag data of NACA 65-series wings
Report presenting the use of Von Karman's two-dimensional transonic similarity law as applied to drag data of three different thickness wings with NACA 65-series sections and aspect ratios of 7.6 over a range of Mach numbers. The correlation was found to be satisfactory, with results better in the subsonic range than in the supersonic range.

High-Speed Aerodynamic Characteristics of a Model Tail Plane with Modified NACA 65-010 Sections and 0 Degree and 45 Degrees Sweepback
Memorandum presenting wind-tunnel tests that have been made to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of a model tail plane with modified NACA 65-010 sections and a tapered plan form. Results were obtained with the model tail plane unswept and swept back. The data show the lift, drag, pitching-moment, and hinge-moment coefficient variation with angle of attack and flap deflection at various Mach numbers.

Effect of Shear Lag on Bending Vibration of Box Beams
"An analytical investigation is made of the effect of shear lag on the bending vibration of wings that are designed essentially as shallow box beams, and a procedure is outlined for incorporating this effect in the determination of bending modes and frequencies. Numerical examples show that shear-lag action in a box beam can have a large influence on its vibration characteristics. The calculations indicate that even though only a small shear-lag action may be observed in a simple static deflection test of the beam, reductions in the second and higher-mode frequencies may be relatively large" (p. 1).
