Aeroradioactivity Survey and Areal Geology of Parts of East-Central New York and West-Central New England (ARMS-I)

Report concerning "[a]n airborne gamma-radiation survey of Connecticut, Rhode Island, and parts of New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont" (p. 5) made between 1958 and 1960 that indicated that a broad range of radioactivity exists in those areas depending on the type of bedrock. Injury Experience in the Coking Industry, 1951 (open access)

Injury Experience in the Coking Industry, 1951

From Introduction and Summary: "Reports from operating companies showed that 25,715 men worked at coke ovens in 1951, about 6 percent more than were employed in 1950 and, except in 1943, the largest work force since 1930, when 28,139 men were employed. The work time for all employees was 70,190,493 man-hours. The returns indicated an average of 344 work days per man as compared with 341 days in the previous year. Accidents at the ovens resulted in the death of 10 and injury to 768 workers, both of these figures representing fewer injuries than in 1950."

Mine Pumping Plants: Anthracite Region of Pennsylvania (open access)

Mine Pumping Plants: Anthracite Region of Pennsylvania

From Summary: "To obtain a reliable picture of the anthracite-mine-water problem and to solve that problem, it is necessary to have factual data on the volume and the quality and character of mine water handled by pumping plants in the anthracite region, as well as kinds of pumps utilized and problems concerning their operation. The main conclusion that be drawn from an investigation of drainage practices in the anthracite region is that, although efficient pumping layouts, tunnels for draining active mines, and large-scale surface-drainage facilities for keeping water out of mines are in use, the anthracite industry still is threatened with curtailment, to a major degree, and premature extinction because of the encroachment of water, unless remedial action is undertaken in the vary near future by all interests concerned."

Regulation of Explosives in the United States: with Especial Reference to the Administration of the Explosives Act of October 6, 1917, by the Bureau of Mines (open access)

Regulation of Explosives in the United States: with Especial Reference to the Administration of the Explosives Act of October 6, 1917, by the Bureau of Mines

From Origin of Federal Explosives Act, October 6, 1917: " A competent force from the Bureau of Mines was then assigned to study the laws and ordinances of countries, States, and municipalities in which lawas and ordinances regulating explosives have been enacted, and especially to ascertain how these laws had been modified by the necessities of the existing state of war, and, also, wherein the proposed law might conflict with or overlap the jurisdiction of existing laws. This incomplete enumeration of the peace-time uses of explosives shows that the quantity consumed is large. A more definite conception is given by the following statistics of production, to which is added statistics for exportation that disclose something of the effect of war on the explosives industry."
