Magnesium Turnover in Man

Data are reviewed from a number of studies on the metabolism of Mg in man and the role of Mg in biological processes. Results are reported from studies using Mg/sup 28/ as a tracer of Mg metabolism in laboratory animals and in man in health and various disease states. It is postulated that the role of Mg in many vital processes may be explained by the fact that the Mg ion tends to form hydrates and double salts and hence has the capacity for complex formation. THE PHOTOCHEMISTRY OF PYRIDINE N-OXIDE

The authors wish to report their results on the photolysis of pyridine N-oxide in alcoholic solution. Both methanol and ethanol solutions of pyridine N-oxide were irradiated. The reaction mixture was analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) using a 2.5% FFAP on Chrom G column and a Porapak Q column. In order to collect the products, the volume of the photolysis solution was reduced in vacuo and the resulting mixture was separated by preparative GLC.

The Electron-Ring Accelerator Program at Lrl (open access)

The Electron-Ring Accelerator Program at Lrl

A progress report is presented on the activities at LRL in connection with electron-ring accelerators. A two-stage compressor unit (employing only low-intensity beams) has been built, and operated with a 4-MeV 100-mA linac as an injector. Electron rings have been formed and compressed from 20 cm radius to 7 cm radius. A three-stage compression unit has been constructed and is now under test with the high intensity (200 A) 3.3-MeV beam of the Astron injector. The apparatus is described. Design work on a magnetic expansion unit is reported.

Electrical Resistivity of Lanthanum, Praseodymium, Neodymium, and Samarium

The electrical resistivities of polycrystalline samples of La, Pr, Nd, and Sm are reported in the temperature range 1.3 to 300 deg K. La exhibits a superconducting transition at 5.8 deg K. The curve for Pr has slope changes at 61 and 95 deg K. The Nd curve shows small jumps at 5 and 20 deg K. Sm shows slope changes at 14 and 106 deg K. (auth)

THE Epsilon*/Lambda BRANCHING RATIO OF Y*1

Recently a T = 1 resonance in the {Lambda}{pi} system called Y*{sub 1} has been observed with a mass of 1385 Mev. Two types of resonances have been predicted that might relate this observation to other elementary-particle interactions: (1) P 3/2 resonances in the {Lambda}{pi} and {Sigma}{pi} systems predicted by global symmetry corresponding to the (3/2, 3/2) resonance of the {pi}N system; (2) a spin-1/2 Y-{pi} resonance resulting from a bound state in the KN system. The position and width of the observed Y*{sub 1} resonance agree with both theories, but since the spin and parity have not yet been determined, it is impossible at present to distinguish between the two theoretical interpretations.

SEARCH FOR MAGNETIC MONOPOLES IN THE LUNAR SAMPLES OF APOLLO11.

An electromagnetic search for magnetic monopoles of the minimum size predicted by Dirac, or of any larger magnitude, has been performed on 8.37 kilograms of lunar surface material returned by the Apollo 11 crew. No monopole was found. This experiment sets new limits on the production cross section for monopoles, and on their occurrence in cosmic radiation.

Monochromatic Cosmic Ray Deuterion Source

The reaction pp {yields} {pi}{sup +}d resulting from the high energy cosmic rays incident on the interstellar hydrogen gas gives rise to secondary deuterons. Since the total cross section for this reaction is appreciable only at proton kinetic energies of 600 MeV, the deuterons have a very small spread in energy. It is estimated that the flux of deuterons from this mechanism should be easily discernible from deuterons produced by other reactions and copious enough to be detected at the earth. The narrow deuteron energy distribution could provide an energy calibration for the study of the existence of a postinjection acceleration.

An Isochronal Differential Microcalorimeter (open access)

An Isochronal Differential Microcalorimeter

An isochronal differential-type microcalorimeter has been designed and constructed. As a result of its simple design it is very easy to handle the samples and assemble the calorimeter. Important to the operation of the calorimeter is a program, also working on the differential principle, that provides linear temperature rise of the samples. The calorimeter is used to measure very small energy releases such as those found in precipithtion, stored energy, etc. It is demonstrated that the calorimeter is easily capable of measuring 0.005 cal with a probable error of the order of 1 to 2%. Atomic Binding Energies From a Modified Thomas-Fermi-Dirac Theory

A quantum correction of the statistical model of the atom was obtained by modifying March and Plaskett's region of integration in the (n/sub r/,l), or quantum-number, plane. Integrations over the plane lead, in the unmodified case, to the Thomas-Fermi density expression and energy equation. Integrations over the modified region are here shown to produce a modified Thomas-Fermi expression for the electron density, and a correction to the kinetic energy. The latter correction shows a similarity to the Weizsacker correction, but is smaller by a slowly changing factor of the order of 10. A modified Thomas-Fermi-Dirac equation was derived by the standard variational procedure. Numerical solutions of the equation were obtained, yielding atomic binding energies in much better agreement with experimental values than those of the unmodified theory. (auth)

Secondary Isotope Effects in Molecular Structure

A study was made to determine whether secondary iso tope effects also occur in molecular structure. Electron diffraction studies were carried out on ethane and deuteroethane. In C/sub 2/H/sub 6/ the mean C-C and C-H bond lengths found agreed very closely with values determined for other paraffin hydrocarbons, and the C--H bond showed a normal primary isotope effect (~ 0.005 A) similar to that found in methane when H is replaced by O. The output of the leastsquares analysis suggested that the mean C-- C bond length in C/sub 2/D/sub 6/ is shorter than in C/sub 2/H/sub 6/ and by about 0.004 A. Th e decrease seemed to be real for the apparent uncertainty was not much greater than 0.001 A. (M.C.G.)

PERTURBATION-THEORY RULES FOR COMPUTING THE SELF-ENERGY OPERATOR IN QUANTUM STATISTICAL MECHANICS

Highly convenient rules are given for the general term in the time-independent perturbation-theory expansion for the self-energy operator of quantum statistical mechanics. The rules are derived by starting from the usual formalism involving time-dependent Green's functions. The well-known formulas for thermodynamic quantities in terms of the self-energy operator are included for completeness.

PROPERTIES OP LIQUID HELIUM-THREE IN THE TWO-BODY CORRELATION APPROXIMATION. I

This is the first of two papers in which the low-temperature properties of liquid He{sup 3} are to be calculated in the thermodynamically consistent 'T-matrix' approximation. The set of coupled integral equations which are to be solved is exhibited in Part A of this paper. Part B of this paper is devoted to a preliminary, zero-temperature calculation which employs the additional approximations of using separable potentials and a noninteracting spectral function to define the interaction of two particles in the medium: the <T>{sub 0} approximation. In this approximation they obtain a spectral function for the quasi particles which they expect to display general features in common with those of the actual spectral function. Using this spectral function, they calculate the thermodynamic properties of the system and find that they compare favorably to those obtained in other calculations.
