Ventures in science status report, Summer 1992 (open access)

Ventures in science status report, Summer 1992

The Ventures in Science summer program is directed towards students who are from underrepresented minority groups in mathematics and science professions. The target group of 40 was drawn from eligible students who will be entering high school freshman in the fall of 1992. 450 students applied. The theme for the summer is Chicago as an Ecosystem. The students are instructed in integrated math and science (2 hours), English/ESL (1 1/2 hrs.), counseling (1 hr.) and, physical education (1 hr.) each day four days a week. Integrated math and science are team taught. Parents are invited to participate in two workshops that will be presented based on their input. Parents may also visit the program at any time and participate in any field trip.

VEPCO network model reconciliation of LANL and MZA model data (open access)

VEPCO network model reconciliation of LANL and MZA model data

The LANL DC load flow model of the VEPCO transmission network shows 210 more substations than the AC load flow model produced by MZA utility Consultants. MZA was requested to determine the source of the difference. The AC load flow model used for this study utilizes 2 standard network algorithms (Decoupled or Newton). The solution time of each is affected by the number of substations. The more substations included, the longer the model will take to solve. In addition, the ability of the algorithms to converge to a solution is affected by line loadings and characteristics. Convergence is inhibited by numerous lightly loaded and electrically short lines. The MZA model reduces the total substations to 343 by creating equivalent loads and generation. Most of the omitted substations are lightly loaded and rated at 115 kV. The MZA model includes 16 substations not included in the LANL model. These represent new generation including Non-Utility Generator (NUG) sites, additional substations and an intertie (Wake, to CP and L). This report also contains data from the Italian State AC power flow model and the Duke Power Company AC flow model.

Verification of RESRAD-build computer code, version 3.1. (open access)

Verification of RESRAD-build computer code, version 3.1.

RESRAD-BUILD is a computer model for analyzing the radiological doses resulting from the remediation and occupancy of buildings contaminated with radioactive material. It is part of a family of codes that includes RESRAD, RESRAD-CHEM, RESRAD-RECYCLE, RESRAD-BASELINE, and RESRAD-ECORISK. The RESRAD-BUILD models were developed and codified by Argonne National Laboratory (ANL); version 1.5 of the code and the user's manual were publicly released in 1994. The original version of the code was written for the Microsoft DOS operating system. However, subsequent versions of the code were written for the Microsoft Windows operating system. The purpose of the present verification task (which includes validation as defined in the standard) is to provide an independent review of the latest version of RESRAD-BUILD under the guidance provided by ANSI/ANS-10.4 for verification and validation of existing computer programs. This approach consists of a posteriori V&V review which takes advantage of available program development products as well as user experience. The purpose, as specified in ANSI/ANS-10.4, is to determine whether the program produces valid responses when used to analyze problems within a specific domain of applications, and to document the level of verification. The culmination of these efforts is the production of this formal Verification Report. …

Verification test report on a solar heating and hot water system

This document provides information on the development, qualification and acceptance verification of Colt, Inc. commercial solar heating and hot water systems and components. The verification includes the performances, the efficiencies and the various methods used, such as similarity, analysis, inspection, test, etc., that are applicable to satisfying the verification requirements. Colt, Incorporated of Southern California has developed two commercial solar heating and hot water systems. The systems have been installed at Yosemite National Park, California, and Pueblo, Colorado. The systems consist of the following subsystems: collector, storage, transport, hot water, auxiliary energy, and controls.

Verifying seismic design of nuclear reactors by testing. Volume 1: test plan (open access)

Verifying seismic design of nuclear reactors by testing. Volume 1: test plan

This document sets forth recommendations for a verification program to test the ability of operational nuclear power plants to achieve safe shutdown immediately following a safe-shutdown earthquake. The purpose of the study is to develop a program plan to provide assurance by physical demonstration that nuclear power plants are earthquake resistant and to allow nuclear power plant operators to (1) decide whether tests should be conducted on their facilities, (2) specify the tests that should be performed, and (3) estimate the cost of the effort to complete the recommended test program.

Vermont Marble Company, Proctor, Vermont: Otter Creek hydroelectric feasibility report (open access)

Vermont Marble Company, Proctor, Vermont: Otter Creek hydroelectric feasibility report

Vermont Marble Company (VMCO) owns and operates four hydroelectric projects in a 50-mile reach of Otter Creek in west central Vermont. This study concerns three of the installations - Center Rutland, Beldens, and Huntington Falls. The fourth site is known as Proctor and will be studied separately. All four plants operate as run-of-river stations, and the limited reservoir storage capacity places severe limitations on any other type of operation. The plants are presently operating at much lower outputs than can be obtained, because they do not use the available discharge and head. The results show that, under the assumptions made in this study, Beldens and Huntington Falls can be economically improved. The rehabilitation of the Center Rutland plant did not look economically attractive. However, the improvement of Center Rutland should not be eliminated from further consideration, because it could become economically attractive if the cost of energy starts escalating at a rate of around 10% per year. The study included a brief appraisal of the existing generating facilities and condition of existing concrete structures, a geological reconnaissance of the sites, analysis of the power potential, flood studies, technical and economic investigations and comparative evaluations of the alternatives for developing the …

Vermont State Briefing Book on low-level radioactive waste management (open access)

Vermont State Briefing Book on low-level radioactive waste management

The Vermont State Briefing Book is one of a series of state briefing books on low-level radioactive waste management practices. It has been prepared to assist state and federal agency officials in planning for safe low-level radioactive waste disposal. The report contains a profile of low-level radioactive waste generators in Vermont. The profile is the result of a survey of Nuclear Regulatory Commission licensees in Vermont. The briefing book also contains a comprehensive assessment of low-level radioactive waste management issues and concerns as defined by all major interested parties including industry, government, the media, and interest groups. The assessment was developed through personal communications with representatives of interested parties, and through a review of media sources. Lastly, the briefing book provides demographic and socioeconomic data and a discussion of relevant government agencies and activities, all of which may affect waste management practices in Vermont.
