Bed Jacket

Bed jacket of black openwork. Hip length-jacket is formed of vertical panels of black braid open work net overlaid/appliquéd with black braid in scrolls and arabesques, the whole is lined/backed with black silk. The panels are constructed to create princess seamed segments for shape/fit. Elbow-length sleeves, V-neckline at front with two hook & eye closures on center front. Neckline and upper part of opening trimmed with off-white eyelet lace ruffle. Two black braided circular button-like applied elements at center front, one at either side of opening.

Bodice

Bodice of black serge with dark green braided cord passementerie and jet bead applique. V-shaped neckline with black lace and ivory net dickey which closes on the right with 4 snaps. Ivory lace trim around collar and black lace around neckline and at cuffs. Long sleeves. Snaps on waistband for skirt (possibly not original to bodice and added at a later date). Center front closure of 4 hook & eyes snap at waistline; 4 non-functioning covered buttons trimmed with black bugle beads. Lined in brown fabric.

Dress of black silk matelassé. A) Fitted bodice of black silk matelassé with vestee of cream silk with lace appliqué trimmed in black and ivory braid in an Art Nouveau motif. High standing collar of lace appliqué matching vestee. Black velvet revers and trim at collar. Long sleeves with rolled back cuffs. Hook & eye closure at left of vestee. Vestee is lined in white polished cotton. Bodice is boned and lined in black polished cotton with center front hook & eye closure; 24" waist. B) Bustle-back skirt with slight train. Capelet of black silk satin. The short cape is trimmed along hem with 3-1/2" band of pleated organza and band of jet beads. Standing neckline trimmed in pleated organza. Center front opening with closure of five hook & eyes, with bow of black silk satin moire with trailing ends attached to right side of opening at throat. Mourning dress of black silk and lace in aesthetic style. Yoke has triangular shaped overlay of black lace trimmed with double rows of black silk ribbon and black lace ruffles on front and back. Attached gathered sash snaps at center back and has trailing, knotted end. Demi-gigot sleeves with lace overlay from wrist to elbow. Watteau back; slightly trained. Closes at center front with three hidden buttons and five hooks & eyes on yoke; partially attached lining of gray cotton that closes with twenty-three buttons down center front. Reinforced hem.

Picture Hat

Picture hat of light pink silk taffeta and feathers. The domed crown is totally covered by sprays of off-white ostrich feathers and pale pink veiling. At one side is a metal buckle with rhinestones. The wide brim is wired at outer edge and covered with the same silk. The whole is swathed in veiling which also hangs down to secure below face of wearer. Crown of hat is lined in off-white silk, the brim is lined with the same pink silk.

Sunbonnet of brown linen with pasteboard staves, crenelated buttoning crown and long tail; crown and tail are separate pieces, sewn together at neck seam; tail fastens to side of brim through 3 off-white buttons on each side; shape of tail is semi-circular; chin ties are narrow hemmed by hand; fabric is a plain weave with both white and brown threads. Measurements: 56 cm. from lowest point of tail to top of crown when laid flat; Brim is 20 cm. deep from outer edge to inner edge.

Capelet

Two-tiered capelet of midnight blue/black velvet and off-white lace. Capelet extends to about small of back, and has high, standing collar trimmed in dense ruff of tightly gathered of black chiffon. Around throat, along both sides of center front opening, around hem, and on edges and hem of the wide tier (7" at center front, 8" over shoulders) is wide band of off-white floral and scroll lace, placed as an applique along edges. Lined in brown fabric. Designer's label at center back neckline: "Mme. Josse / 3 / Boulevard des Italiens / Paris"

Graduation gown ensemble of ivory silk taffeta decorated with bands of pearls, glass beads and tucked beading. A) Fitted bodice. Front fullness below deep round yoke trimmed with beading. Yoke is constructed with horizontal and vertical pin tucks forming window pane/checkerboard pattern. High neck worn with neck ribbon. Epaulets over top of long cannon style sleeves with two sets of three pin tucks above elbow; pleated cuffs trimmed with matching beading. Hem of bodice is bordered with matching beading. Left side hook & eye closure and at left shoulder. Lined in white polished cotton with boning and separate hook & eye closure. B) Full length skirt gored and fitted over hips with train in the back.
