Climate Metrics for C1–C4 Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) (open access)

Climate Metrics for C1–C4 Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)

This article looks at hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) which are potent greenhouse gases that are potential substitutes for ozone depleting substances. The Kigali amendment lists 17 HFCs that are currently in commercial use to be regulated under the Montreal Protocol. Future commercial applications may explore the use of other HFCs, most of which currently lack an evaluation of their climate metrics. In this work, atmospheric lifetimes, radiative efficiencies (REs), global warming potentials (GWPs), and global temperature change potentials (GTPs) for all saturated HFCs with fewer than 5 carbon atoms are estimated to help guide future usage and policy decisions.

Temporal complexity measure of reaction time series: Operational versus event time (open access)

Temporal complexity measure of reaction time series: Operational versus event time

Article describes how detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) is a well-established method to evaluate scaling indices of time series, which categorize the dynamics of complex systems. The authors propose treating each reaction time as a duration time that changes the representation from operational (trial number) time n to event (temporal) time t, or X(t).

Loss of Migratory Traditions Makes the Endangered Patagonian Huemul Deer a Year-Round Refugee in Its Summer Habitat

This article analyzes the historical spatiotemporal behavior of the huemul (Hippocamelus bisulcus), an endangered deer endemic to Patagonia. Losing migratory traditions is a major threat, and may explain their presently prevalent skeletal diseases, reduced longevity, and lacking recolonizations for most remaining huemul subpopulations.

Collaborative Research: Using Uncertainty Quantification and Validated Computational Models to Analyze Pumping Performance of Valveless, Tubular Hearts (open access)

Collaborative Research: Using Uncertainty Quantification and Validated Computational Models to Analyze Pumping Performance of Valveless, Tubular Hearts

Data management plan for the research grant, "Collaborative Research: Using Uncertainty Quantification and Validated Computational Models to Analyze Pumping Performance of Valveless, Tubular Hearts." This project will develop a computational model of the essential features of the circulatory system: the electrical activity of the heart, muscle contractions of the tube walls, and the fluid-structure interactions of the heart walls and blood within. This computational framework aims to be faithful to that of a real, model animal (tunicate, or sea squirt). The model will then be analyzed with mathematical tools to determine the physical limits of the pumping system. Results of this project will improve the understanding of human heart development at the earliest stages. Also, it will point to how the large, multi-chambered hearts of vertebrates could have evolved from smaller structures.

Dual activity of anthocyanidin reductase supports the dominant plant proanthocyanidin extension unit pathway (open access)

Dual activity of anthocyanidin reductase supports the dominant plant proanthocyanidin extension unit pathway

This article presents research on genetic and biochemical analyses that shows ANR has dual activity and is involved not only in the production of (−)-epicatechin starter units but also in the formation of 2,3-cis-leucocyanidin to serve as (−)-epicatechin extension units. The results find that differences in the product specificities of ANRs account for the presence/absence of PA polymerization and the compositions of PAs across plant species
