Underlying Ossification Phenotype in a Murine Model of Metastatic Synovial Sarcoma

This article presents the analysis of genetic mouse models of synovial sarcoma to determine the extent of ossification in the tumors and its relationship with morbidity. The authors noted higher ossification within their metastatic mouse model of synovial sarcoma. Their conclusion is that both metastasis and ossification are dependent on time, but that they are independent of one another.

Evidence of Endozoochory in Upland Geese Chloephaga picta and White-Bellied Seedsnipes Attagis malouinus in Sub-Antarctic Chile

This article evaluates the role of endozoochory in herbivorous and sympatric bird species in sub-Antarctic Chile. The authors hypothesize that fragments of bryophyte gametophytes retrieved from their feces are viable and capable of regenerating new plant tissue. This relationship may have important implications in the way bryophytes disperse and colonize habitats facing climate change.

Role of heterophase interfaces on local coercivity mechanisms in the magnetic Al0.3CoFeNi complex concentrated alloy (open access)

Role of heterophase interfaces on local coercivity mechanisms in the magnetic Al0.3CoFeNi complex concentrated alloy

Article describes how authors use state-of-the-art electron microscopy techniques to show that the magnetization reversal process in an Al0.3CoFeNi magnetic complex concentrated alloy (CCA), which is responsible for its coercivity, changes dramatically from a nucleation-type mechanism in the FCC+L12 state of the CCA. Their work reveals that heterophase FCC/BCC interfaces have a much stronger effect on coercivity than isostructural chemically ordered/disordered interfaces and provides a powerful guide to the rational design of microstructure to tune magnetic properties in both complex concentrated alloys and conventional magnetic alloys.

The metabolic cost of turning right side up in the Mediterranean spur-thighed tortoise (Testudo graeca)

Article examining the the metabolic cost of self-righting in the terrestrial Mediterranean spur-thighed tortoise using respirometry and kinematic video analysis and comparing this to the metabolic cost of locomotion at a moderate, easily sustainable speed. The results found that self-righting is, relatively, metabolically expensive and costs around two times the mass-specific power required to walk.

Reduced reflectance and altered color: The potential cost of external particulate matter accumulation on urban Rock Pigeon (Columba livia) feathers

Authors of the article state that airborne particulate matter (PM) can accumulate on feather surfaces and alter feather appearance, so they quantified PM accumulation on Rock Pigeon feathers and analyzed the spectral properties of extracted particulates. Their findings suggest that wild birds could incur an urban pollution penalty as PM accumulation has the potential to alter feather properties.

FERONIA and wall-associated kinases coordinate defense induced by lignin modification in plant cell walls (open access)

FERONIA and wall-associated kinases coordinate defense induced by lignin modification in plant cell walls

Article discusses authors' findings that through genetic screening for suppressors of defense gene induction in the low lignin ccr1-3 mutant of Arabidopsis thaliana, we found that loss of function of the receptor-like kinase FERONIA, although not restoring growth, affected cell wall remodeling and blocked release of elicitor-active pectic polysaccharides as a result of the ccr1-3 mutation. They determine that engineering plant cell walls will require development of ways to bypass endogenous pectin signaling pathways.

Tuning the decay of sound in a viscous metamaterial (open access)

Tuning the decay of sound in a viscous metamaterial

Authors of the article use analytical results for viscous dissipation in phononic crystals to calculate the decay coefficient of a sound wave propagating at low frequencies through a two-dimensional phononic crystal with a viscous fluid background. They claim that the decay coefficient exhibits dependence on the direction of propagation; that is, a homogenized phononic crystal behaves like an anisotropic viscous fluid.

Using CRISPR/Cas to enhance gene expression for crop trait improvement by editing miRNA targets (open access)

Using CRISPR/Cas to enhance gene expression for crop trait improvement by editing miRNA targets

Article states that gene editing tools such as CRISPR/Cas9 are often thought of as a means to prevent gene expression; however, a more subtle and yet powerful approach is the enhancement of gene expression by precise deletion of repressor sites within a gene of interest. Authors argue that gene editing of miRNA target sites is preferable over deletion of the miRNA genes themselves, given that it avoids the pitfalls of unspecific derepression of miRNA target(s) beyond the gene of interest.

Acetaldehyde oxidation at elevated pressure (open access)

Acetaldehyde oxidation at elevated pressure

A detailed chemical kinetic model for oxidation of CH3CHO at intermediate to high temperature and elevated pressure has been developed and evaluated by comparing predictions to novel high-pressure flow reactor experiments as well as shock tube ignition delay measurements and jet-stirred reactor data from literature. The flow reactor experiments were conducted with a slightly lean CH3CHO/O2 mixture highly diluted in N2 at 600–900 K and pressures of 25 and 100 bar. This is the accepted manuscript version of the published article.
